This guitar is just amazing. I can't believe how great it looks and plays for the money. It's perfect down to the detail. If you are looking for a pro level guitar without dropping over a grand, this clearly stands out as one of the best options out there, if not the best option. Hands down. You won't regret it.
The guitar comes with two Blacktop Filteron humbuckers, a 3-way pickup selector, a volume knob for each pickup, a master tone knob, and a master volume. They all work great for honing in on the exact sound that you want. I typically leave both pickups at full volume and use the master tone and pickup selector for quick tweaking. The difference is pretty distinct between the neck and bridge pickup, one giving you great bluesy tone and one giving you bright chimey scratch respectively. And this guitar is a gretsch, so it has that signature Gretsch sound in there (bite, chime, warmth) but it's definetly more rocky than a hollowbody. Great for rock, pop, country, etc. Also, my particular guitar came in the sunburst finish and it looks absolutely gorgeous. It's been given many compliments in a short time. The neck is neck-through design, and I can tell. It's very solid. The intonation was spot on from the factory. I even put thicker gauge strings on, and I haven't seen a change in the action at all. Plus the neck-through combined with the chambered body gives the guitar a very full sound and a longer sustain. And I love the hump block inlays!
The Pro Jet is built very well. The tuners are solid and keep in tune without a problem. The finish was perfect on arrival. No visible flaws. The strap holdersn are anchored in the wood very securely, and I don't forsee them stripping or loosening at all. Also, as you can see in the pictures, the holders are wide, which means that it is very difficult for a strap to go on or come off. The good thing about that is that you can easily screw them on and off, so your strap is secure without strap locks, yet it's still easy to add or remove the strap.I gave quality a nine because on arrival, all the knobs (volume, tone) were loose. In fact, the volume knob actually fell off within the first 10 minutes of use. That's an easy fix though, as the knobs have an adjustment screw for tightening built in. Unfortunately, in my zest for secure knobs, I actually over-tightend the master volume and slightly bent the steel holding the knob. Once I reseated the knob though, it wasn't at all noticeable and It's now very tight and secure. A very small issue.Don't be afraid of the fact that it's made in the East. It's very high quality.
This guitar costs $600, but it looks and plays like a guitar that should literally cost twice as much. I almost feel like I'm ripping Gretsch off. I would buy this guitar again in a heartbeat. In fact, being a touring/studio musician, I'm likely going to be buying a back-up Pro Jet soon.

I bought it at a guitar show from the distributor and got an excellent deal which included hard shell case. I took it home and played it less than an hour and was tuning it constantly. I couldn't make it through a single song without serious tuning issues. The worst problem was that when I contacted the distributor they would not even talk to me. I was stuck with it. I sold it to a novice player and at least I gave him the option to return it to me if he didn't like it. That's way more than Gretsch would do. Bought a Les Paul and am completely happy now.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

Have more than 85 Guitars in the Studio, "Studio 7" not at all boasting, just want the tones and voicing for different Song styles when recording, Was looking for the sharp yet smooth Tone,Fat but clear, Had an artist play a Gretsch with the Trons Mini Humbuckers, After recording, I was amazed at the tones it produced, Had to add that sound to my arsenal,I grabbed up the Gretsch 5435 like the gold, Recieved it last night, Took in into the studio and checked it out, Tuned her up,checked intonation, Bottom E and A were slightly off, a quick twist of a screw Driver, and it was spot on. Connected to a Twin, using a MXR Carbon Copy,And WOW in Bridge position, has a very clear sting but not piercing very nice even tone which will record very nicely, center position nice creamie tone but still very clear with punch, Neck position was very nice fat tone, clear not a dull flat tone some produce in this position, Noticed the overall Balance was nice laid nicely on my lap, very comfortable to play,Have some guitars that has felt head heavy not this Gretsch, Gold /chrome really pops will look great live shows, Yes that does matter! Made in China sticker on the back of head stock, some purest will snob!! most of which drive Toyota's, SO what I don't care if it was made in a porta potty on Mars, as long as it does the Job and helps achieve what I want, I have 10 High end Gibsons most are considered Classic, over 100k appraised value, and this Gretsch 5435 is just as enjoyable to play, without the worry of it walking off at a live show, Bottom Line,I'am very pleased, has its own style and great tones, looks smart, and its a Gretsch at a unbelievable investment,

G5435 Gretsch Electromatic Pro Jet

By Jan Paul

from Australia

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

Overall i give this guitar a 9, because most of all i really love playing it (and it was such a great price at Musician's Friend) The only detraction would be the question of finding a case easily...which hopefully is going to be a hint for case manufacturers. Make Les Paul cases slightly wider and longer (as for Epiphones) so they can accomodate Jet and Double Jet bodies
This guitar has a beautiful finish and tone. The through-neck and medium heavy chambered body feel great. I love playing unplugged, winding down very late nights after coming back from a gig and feel it ring with a perfect lasting sustain. This is how i can tell whether a guitar is any good. Pick-ups, strings, bridge, tailpiece and add-ons can always be changed, but the neck has to feel right for You and have the right tone wood and a good transfer to the body. I also love the medium jumbo frets. Playing through a couple of Marshall FX pedals plus a guitar modeler and have all tones i will ever need with the versatile combination of much improved bridge and neck Gretsch Filtertron Humbuckers that were added to this new line recently.
There is an aura about real guitars, wherever they are made. The name Gretsch carries a certain responsibility to keep up the quality it is known for. Whatever Your thoughts about Asian productions might be...this is a quality guitar made in China. I have played a Gretsch Power Jet, a Firebird (both are heavier and more than twice the price), the Gretsch Electromatic 5445T Double Jet and also the Korean made Hollow Body Electromatics...they are all quality Gretsch Guitars and in time will improve. Every player has individual set-up requirements...no big deal...i bought a very good condition level 2 slightly used from MF and i can only say: as long as you get one with a straight neck You will want to keep it.
You won't find a better price / quality balance. The Electromatics have gained a reputation for getting a good name and sales...that's not just the reasonable pricing.

Be aware that finding a case is a bit of a mission. Regular Les Paul cases are not quite wide enough for the Jet body in the lower bout and the Gretsch Pro Jet overall length is 41" - 105cm. Other than buying a purpose built Gretsch case, look for a medium sized suitable archtop case or try some thinline acoustic guitar cases.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

This is the First time I ordered from Musician's Friend. The plan: Order and try three guitars I've always wanted, to decide whether my American Gibson V2, Made in Japan Fender Strat, Mexican Fender Tele, and Chinese Epiphone SG gave me all the tonal and playing features I'd ever want - or whether any of the following: a Les Paul, an ES-339, and/or a Gretsch with Filtertrons, would significantly expand the tonal and playability possibilities. Also, would the guitars by Epiphone and Gretsch in this price range, be a great value or a disappointment? Answer: I am keeping all three beautiful, different, versatile guitars, for a cost less than one decent American made Fender or Gibson. Are they as good as the American models, in fit, finish, wood quality, and overall performance? Almost certainly not. But for a cat with my ability level and budget, they are great (see my other reviews under the nickname ETHELTHEFROG from Miami, FL.)
I've played a few Les Pauls, loved the look of the red sunburst and goldtop models, the difference in sound and playability from my Fenders, but could never justify buying myself a Gibson Les Paul, even used. I wanted to hear whether the Gretsch had the unique Filtertron tone I read about and heard in all the videos I watched. Also, the goldtop looked great on the MF website, and the body was similar but not the same as the LP gold tops which I've admired. Finally, I've always wanted an ES 339 or 355, for the look, and the semi-hollow body and P-90 sound I gig, I want guitars that look good as well as play nicely, but are not so expensive that I'd regret losing them to theft or damage, which all live and studio players know happens (luckily I've only had one inexpensive Ibanez bass stolen, but I loved it, and my Strat was in it's case when my buddy drove his car over it by mistake, no harm done, amazingly!)
OK, the Gretsch arrived really fast by regular ground shipping. Out of the box the setup was perfect. It looked great, with the white pearl pick guard, chrome Gretsch control knobs and black and chrome vintage looking Filtertrons, and tombstone fret markers. There was one tiny nick on the low E side of the nut, but not worth sending the guitar back. Everything else looked very good... Binding on fret board by frets was a little less than perfect, but did not affect playability.
I was and am a drummer first, so there is still a lot I don't know about electric guitars and amps, though I have played electric since 1978. By experimenting with my 40w all tube Fender Deluxe Hot Rod and Solid state Frontman 65R amps, I learned: Put the amp on 6 at least. Then dial in the master volume and individual volume pots on the guitar at various levels to have more expressive range. Experiment and you hear a huge range from lightness and country twang, jazzy warmth, to blow your face off growl and loudness, with NO drive or distortion added from pedals or amp switching. WITH extra overdrive and distortion this is a blues rock monster. These pickups will push the amp easily into natural distortion on the clean channel if you set the amp and guitar controls correctly. The body has excellent resonance. This guitar definitely sounds and plays differently than the new Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro with coil tapping, which I am also keeping. They are something like distant cousins, similar, but with their own personalities.
I love the positioning of the PU controls and PU selector switch, because I strum loosely, even on electrics, and I was always hitting and changing the PU switch on my Fenders. Here, you can strum right by the bridge for beautiful brightness, and not hit control knobs or switches like on the Fenders. With the master and separate PU volume controls you can dial in a rhythm appropriate volume on the master and bridge PU, set the neck PU at a lead level, then when you get to a lead, flip the PU toggle and rock! Need more volume? Crank up the master! Lead done? Flip back down to center or bottom position and quickly dial back the master.
I wanted the Bigsby model but reviews read here indicated tuning problems. I never mod my guitars, they have to be what I want as is, but I may add a Bigsby to this axe, I already love it so much. Normally I take my guitars to practice and gigs in gig bags, but I will probably buy a case to protect this bargain... "The best I ever had!"

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

My only gripe would be that the wood tone on the back and sides is so dark that it doesn't stand out.
Apart from that slight concern it's a beautiful instrument. It's tone was Gretsch even before I plugged it in.
It's fun to play it even without an amp. Through an amp it becomes a whole 'nother beast...actually, several other beasts! The pickups ring sweet and clean together or by themselves, but are quite willing to burn through the haze of any bar I've ever played. I'd forgotten how distinctive these guitars sound. And I just hope I can remember all the options of the 3 volume knob setup. As soon as I tweaked her into tune I loved it. I might have it set up after I've worn out the set of strings that came on it, but they're not bad at all, and the intonation seems fine to me. Action's probably a touch high, but I was always a rhythm guitarist so that's how I like 'em. I am really impressed by this guitar in every way possible.
      {If only it came in a 12-string...}

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

When i received this guitar, it looked perfect out of the box. Upon closer inspection i realized there was a tiny finish scratch on the binding of the fret board about an 8th of an inch long. Other than that the guitar appears perfect. After spending 3-4 hours setting up the guitar it was playing perfectly except for the fact that the A string has some fret buzz. I suspect it has something to due with one high fret.

I play in a worship band and this guitar fills every need. After adjusting the truss rod, the action, and the pickup height, the guitars plays excellent. I play it though a Vox ac15 or Fender blues jr with a tube screamer and it sounds great. Overall i am very happy with my purchase and plan to get years and years out of this great instrument.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

Great guitar. Provided me with options. I use several Fenders, as I am not a humbucker guy. I found I needed more oomph than a Tele when playing Jimmy Page, etc, but I don't like my over-the-top Les Paul. The Gretsch pickups have between 4k and 5k ohms, and when combined with the resonance from the chambered body, this Pro Jet gets great Zepellin tone, which also helps on many other songs, where my Strat and Tele don't quite provide enough sustain, etc. So, these Black Tron pickups are a great upgrade to the Electromatic line. I don't have a problem with keeping the guitar in tune, which is something I can't tolerate. (more problems with my Les Paul.) My one concern with the Pro Jet is with the knobs. Quality of the pot construction could have been better, but it's not a major concern. For the money, this is a great addition to my arsenal, and it has replaced my P-90 equipped PRS on the stage. Others have said it gives a good clean tone, and it does. But, I have found it has a naturally grittier sound than my Fenders. So, it plays nicely with my Tube Screamer and many other pedals. I purchased the gold color as it is just beautiful. I also decided to go with the non-Bigsby. I don't have experience with trem arms other than Fender, but I heard Bigsbys can cause tuning problems... wanted to avoid that.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

I was worried initially about a Chinese remake of the Duo Jet but this Pro Jet changed my mind 10 minutes out of the box. I wanted something in tone between my Tele or Strat and my Les Paul or Es137. This Pro Jet sits right in the middle. Great tone for blues on the neck pu and edgy tone on the bridge pu.I love the configuration of the master volume and it's close where you need it. The build quality is excellent on mine and the set up is spot on although I'll probably have to redo the setup for my strings which I expected. The only thing I did is change the strings right away to my regular choice of GHS strings. I couldn't find a flaw anywhere. Even though this Pro Jet was inexpensive it will make a fine addition to my gigging guitars and will get me some sounds that are different from my other guitars. It might be hard to find a case or gig bag though because the body is a little bigger than a Les Paul even though shaped very similar.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

I am pretty impressed with this guitar.
          This is my first Grestch.
Always wanted to try one and glad I finally did!
This is a great guitar for playing rythym (for me anyway) not a solo monster.
But for playing clean and classic rock rythyms this guitar sounds GREAT right out of the box.
It's got a real cool tone to it. Now I know what the "Grestch Tone" is all about. And I like it!
I have had a few guitars in this price range and this one is right up there with the best of them.
If your thinking about one......give it a shot. Well worth the price!
          Rock on!!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

I bought the gold speck Pro Jet and was very concerned about our Missouri climate -vs- it's basswood body and so far, it has held up perfect. Stable body and neck. Everything else is perfect still, so many thanks Gretsch and Musicians Friend, you have a great product at an affordable price.

I take 3 guitars, Strat, Les paul and Tele to gigs for various songs. I bought the 5435 and used it all night for every song. Didn't want to put it down. It's great to look at and sounds even better. For the money i couldn't ask for more

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

Ok so I have not had this PROJET for very long but I just felt compelled to throw in my 2 cents. I have never owned a Gretsch guitar before, it's always been; Gibson, Fender, Gibson, Fender, Gibson, Fender, well you get the point. Even at the price point of this guitar, I am simply amazed at the tonal variations it produces clean or distorted. The neck is just the right size, the electronics seem very solid and have great variation. Out of the box the set up was nice. I had to adjust the intonation on 2 strings and raise the bridge up just a hair and walla!! I've had soooo many guitars in the past that had such a drastic difference between the bridge and neck PU that drove me nuts. Again, I am writing this review with only a few days of owning but am truly impressed.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

I have the 2 color sunburst and love the look as it is unique to any jet that Gretsch offers. Absolutely beautiful finish on mine with nothing to complain about. I just wish that Gretsch would offer a different pickguard on this model. Love the blacktop filtertrons. Tonally speaking I think they are very versatile and sound great plugged into a Vox or Fender tube amp. On the other hand, the pots leave something to be desired. I would consider replacing the pots and perhaps the pickup selector and jack. I have no complaints with the tuning machines on this guitar. They seem to hold tune well. The bridge on this guitar sucks thanks to a constantly rattling and buzzing saddle retention spring. I would consider replacing that as well. After a good set-up this guitar plays quite well, but expect to have to do some work. (minor neck adjustment, action, intonation) With that being said I have taken quite a liking to this guitar. I don't see myself parting with it any time soon. If you are willing to spend a little extra to upgrade the electronics and bridge, and put some time in a good set-up, I think you will be very pleased.

The pickups on the G5435 are nothing short of amazing. It delivers a cyrstal clear yet aggressive tone. The finish was flawless as well. The gold is a metalic finish and it simply looks great. I'm glad I purchased it.

I wanted something different. I didn't want to sacrifice quality but I also wanted to make sure I didn't kill my budget. This a wonderful guitar with beautiful frets inlays, wonderful hardware, a great color and excellent sound, I also really like the main volume knob. It plays very well and the craftsmanship is awesome. The case I ordered for it ended up being too big so I called customer service and verified the correct case and have that on the way. I'm so excited about this guitar! First time to order with MY and they did a great job.
