OVERVIEW

A winning combination of features and social awareness.

Gretsch and Bono join forces once again for a new signature guitar model bearing the special (RED) logo adorning the pickguard and truss rod cover to bring awareness of Bono's support of Product Red and their humanitarian efforts in the battle against HIV/AIDS.

The double-cutaway G5623 Electromatic Center-Block (RED) Bono Signature Model puts Bonos personalized stamp on Gretsch's new thinline spruce center-block design, which delivers high gain-friendly tone and greater control over the kind of feedback players want.

Other premium features include a bound arched maple top with bound sound holes, maple sides and arched back (also bound), maple neck, 22-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with Neo-Classic thumbnail inlays, dual Black Top FilterTron pickups with three-position toggle switching and master volume and tone controls, anchored Adjusto-Matic bridge with G-cutout tailpiece, Grover deluxe tuners, and chrome hardware. Includes deluxe thinline case.

"The (GRETSCH) RED guitar is a guitarist' dream," said Bono, co-founder of (RED). "And the reality is that every time someone buys one, it' raising money to fight AIDS. That money can buy life-saving medicine for pregnant mothers living with HIV, and prevent their babies being born with the virus. They'e the same pills that will help deliver an AIDS Free Generation."

Since it was founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver in 2006, (RED) has generated more than $275 million for the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, to support HIV/AIDS grants in Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania and Zambia. Global Fund grants that (RED) supports have impacted more than 55 million people with prevention, treatment, counseling, HIV testing and care services.

This electromatic center block Gretch is a master work! You really can't get a better bang for your buck if you're looking for a guitar like this. I have been dreaming of buying a Gibson 335 for some time and when I saw this on the stupid deal of the day I could not pass it up simply because it has the best combination style and form coming out of the electromatic line. The pickups sound great in all positions and the new cinder block design gives you controllability of just the right kind of feedback you're hoping to get out of a guitar like this. I just love it! I may remove the pick guard but other than that I I'd probably only change the strap button position from back of the neck to top of the horn like some other electromatics, but I think that's getting a bit nit picky. After having it in hand and playing it a couple of nights I'd have to honestly say I would pay full price. Highly recommend this guitar and very pleased with the quality including the well padded custom case.

This is my first Gretch guitar. Overall it is a good guitar, but the one I got has a major flaw with the volume pot. A small change in the volume (from 10 to 9) makes a very drastic drop in volume (at least 60% drop in volume). This means that you can use this guitar only when the volume is all the way up. This makes the guitar useless for professional stage and live use, and very limited for studio use. The volume pot works basically as a kill switch. This is not acceptable for a guitar even at half its price range. I have seen reviews complaining about flat sound from the pick ups. The bad volume pot may have been the issue. Aside from the major flaw with the volume pot, I did not notice any other issues. The guitar plays very well with no fret buzz. The pickups are more on the bright side, but you can get some Jazz sounds out of it. It comes with Grover tuners which are awesome. It has a very nice hard shell case. I am not sure if I am going to keep it and change the pot or return it at this point.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5623 Electromatic Center-Block Bono (RED) Signature Model Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with Hardshell Case:

I use this in a church playing rhythm electric guitar. I am currently running it directly into the PA through a digitech rp500. I'm really loving the tones I'm getting out of this. I got the guitar on a stupid deal of the day. Its a lot of instrument for the money at that price point and with the hard shell case. Intonation was spot on out of the box and it stays in tune.

My one complaint would be around quality control. The instrument jack is constantly coming loose, and the strap locks tend to unscrew entirely from where it was drilled into the guitar. Wouldn't expect issues like that on a guitar at this price. Not impressed in that area, and I'm not sure if there's an easy fix.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5623 Electromatic Center-Block Bono (RED) Signature Model Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with Hardshell Case:

I've had consitstanly good luck with open-box purchases from MF, and this Gretsch is no exception. Probably the best buy in a semi-hollow arch-top. Very much worth the price and one of the nicest quality imports I've seen, including the case, which is not always the case. And red IS my favorite color.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5623 Electromatic Center-Block Bono (RED) Signature Model Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with Hardshell Case:

First of all, let me address the volume control of this guitar. It is not defective or a flaw. It is the way it's designed to be. I own two Japanese reissues, a Country Gent and a Duo Jet and they are both like that. The Bono is actually easier to dial in, because my other two have the tone control switching and dual volume controls plus a master volume. The volume and tone pots on the Bono interact with each other. Roll off the tone and the output is decreased. This is "old school" wiring. Set the volume of the guitar to the lower point of the drop-off and adjust your amp's gain and volume to get a nice juicy sound. Now, when you roll up the guitar volume to max, it's like you've engaged a transparent boost.

Yes, this guitar is a quality instrument. I was afraid it would be cheesy and overpriced. It's not, but if you can snag one at a discount then go for it. Fit, finish, switching all on par with my Japanese reissues. A nice looking rosewood fretboard with good, smallish frets. The Blacktop Filtertrons sound really good. Played through a Vox Nightrain with Celestion Greenback. Nice throaty sound, no mud. Pickups are medium output. I really don't care for the white (with Red emblem) pickguard and truss rod cover. Will replace with a black truss rod cover and either remove the pickguard or replace with black or muted silver. A facsimile of Bono's signature is on the back of the headstock, OK, sure. Comes with a quality hardshell case. Same type of case as my overpriced Duo Jet reissue.

I got a smoking deal on a "mint" open box. The guitar showed up perfect. Best set up guitar I've ever purchased. Action and intonation very nice. Build quality feels excellent. Volume rolloff is abrupt, but not terrible.

I have been playing guitar for the better part of 6 years now, so I DO NOT claim to know everything. But I will say that this guitar stays true to the reviews and videos that I researched. I bought this guitar as the "Stupid Deal of the Day" and I can honestly say that I would definitely buy this guitar or other Gretsch products in the future. The guitar was playable straight out of the box. I just had to tune it up, adjust the intonation ever so slightly and was able to go to town on it! I've had the guitar for probably about 3 weeks now, and as of now, I haven't had any issues so far. The pickups sound so clear. The tone is stellar as well. It's a great buy and the charity that part of the proceeds made from this guitar go towards is great, too!

I'm glad Gretsch is making some affordable instruments that don't break down like the ones in the 60's. This one is puzzling to me in that Bono played a GREEN G5623, so I don't know why they decided to permanently mark the pickguard and trussrod cover with "(RED)." It makes the guitar look cheap, so, personally, I'll have an aftermarket guard made. It was a good cause, but why do this to the guitar ?

I can echo a lot of the other reviews - the guitar was great right out of the box. Very solid feel of a well built guitar. The pickups are great and very strong and bright - it does seem like you have to turn the volume up on the pickups to get them to perform (the review above where they mention a flat sound may be related to not turning up the pickup volume enough ?) but I love the sound. The guitar stays in tune and sounds great even if not plugged in.

Only minor 'con' is that the pickup jack was a bit loose and I'm not 100% sure how best to tighten it w/o causing some trouble underneath the hood.

Very impressed and Musicians Friend was very easy to work with - thanks for the great deal !
