This electromatic center block Gretch is a master work! You really can't get a better bang for your buck if you're looking for a guitar like this. I have been dreaming of buying a Gibson 335 for some time and when I saw this on the stupid deal of the day I could not pass it up simply because it has the best combination style and form coming out of the electromatic line. The pickups sound great in all positions and the new cinder block design gives you controllability of just the right kind of feedback you're hoping to get out of a guitar like this. I just love it! I may remove the pick guard but other than that I I'd probably only change the strap button position from back of the neck to top of the horn like some other electromatics, but I think that's getting a bit nit picky. After having it in hand and playing it a couple of nights I'd have to honestly say I would pay full price. Highly recommend this guitar and very pleased with the quality including the well padded custom case.

This is my first Gretch guitar. Overall it is a good guitar, but the one I got has a major flaw with the volume pot. A small change in the volume (from 10 to 9) makes a very drastic drop in volume (at least 60% drop in volume). This means that you can use this guitar only when the volume is all the way up. This makes the guitar useless for professional stage and live use, and very limited for studio use. The volume pot works basically as a kill switch. This is not acceptable for a guitar even at half its price range. I have seen reviews complaining about flat sound from the pick ups. The bad volume pot may have been the issue. Aside from the major flaw with the volume pot, I did not notice any other issues. The guitar plays very well with no fret buzz. The pickups are more on the bright side, but you can get some Jazz sounds out of it. It comes with Grover tuners which are awesome. It has a very nice hard shell case. I am not sure if I am going to keep it and change the pot or return it at this point.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5623 Electromatic Center-Block Bono (RED) Signature Model Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with Hardshell Case:

I purchased this guitar as a stupid deal of the day. It was a decent guitar but I returned it and got a roadhouse strat instead. I would have been extremely disappointed if I had paid full price for it but at almost half off it was almost a keeper. Well made and stayed in tune. However, the input jack kept coming loose. The pickups were lifeless. I've had other Gretsch guitars in the past but they either had humbuckers or the megatrons (Patrick Von Stump model). I almost kept it but was really uninspired to pick it up and play it as it really offered nothing over my main guitar. If you get this guitar at a huge discount it would be worth considering but at full price Gretsch has better offerings than this at a lower cost point.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5623 Electromatic Center-Block Bono (RED) Signature Model Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with Hardshell Case:

This is my first Gretsch. Frankly, I bought this when MF had an insane deal on them. It came with a decent quality hard case, too. The solid red color? Not my first choice, but the finish quality is excellent. The "Red" organization and Bono are involved with some extremely noble causes. I wouldn't be ashamed to say I support them, however, I admit that displaying the logo on the pickguard and truss rod cover are also not my first choice. I did remove the pickguard. Maybe including a choice of an unadorned pickguard and truss cover would've sold more guitars and raised more for the cause (?).
I own a Les Paul, SG, Stratocasters, Telecaster and an Epi Casino. All top quality guitars. I have to say that these Filtertron pickups are among the best clean sounding pickups I have heard in any guitar. They don't lose their character with added gain, either. Great balance and shimmer. Compared to my Casino, it's the same size but heavier with way less feedback issues (center block). The guitar arrived with great action. I haven't had to make any adjustments (may need slight intonation). It's a fantastic guitar. (A Bigsby option would have been great, too....I may just add one.)

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5623 Electromatic Center-Block Bono (RED) Signature Model Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with Hardshell Case:

I'm glad Gretsch is making some affordable instruments that don't break down like the ones in the 60's. This one is puzzling to me in that Bono played a GREEN G5623, so I don't know why they decided to permanently mark the pickguard and trussrod cover with "(RED)." It makes the guitar look cheap, so, personally, I'll have an aftermarket guard made. It was a good cause, but why do this to the guitar ?

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5623 Electromatic Center-Block Bono (RED) Signature Model Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with Hardshell Case:

I bought this on a Stupid Deal and for that it is very good. Set up was perfect.
Build quality is exceptional for Korean guitar; comparable to my American strat. I did not like the Red logo so I changed out the plates for a small amount of money. Sound from bridge pickup is not as much "jangle" as I was looking for in a Gretsch and not as much "jazz" tone as hoped in the neck position. So the Blacktop pickups are a bit bland through my Twin and Plexi. Side by side comparison, I have to say I prefer my American HSS fat 50s strat by far and can get identical or better sounds from it. But i'm glad I tried the Gretsch, it is great build and quality and sounds ok. It just doesn't add enough sparkle or character, not sure if I will keep it. It does look great and I prefer NOT to have a Bigsby like most Gretsch have.

I am a bass player but started on the guitar for many years.. I am a pro musician.. Musicians Friend had a great deal going on with these.. Or I most likely wouldn't have bought it ( I have enough guitars) BUT..... I would have missed out. his guitar is worth every penny at the price they charge normally. Great sound... Setup right out of the box, intonation was spot on. I would buy this guitar again if I lost it...

I've owned scores of guitars and this first ever Gretsch for me by far was the biggest surprise in terms of value! My main guitars are a USA Tele and a USA Studio Les Paul. This Gretsch is etter than both my USA made 335 and 339 both of which I sold. Always wanted a semi-hollow electric I could love and this is the one for me. Less is more, simple controls and versatile sound all at an unbelievable price. Covers rock, jazz and blues with ease. I'll be replacing the pick guard and truss rod cover soon but that and a good set up with 10's or 11's and this guitar is perfect.

Great guitar. Ugly pick guard and truss rod. Plays easy, sounds so darn good. I am not sure why there is not the usual master volume Gretsch wiring scheme on this model......"Less" is not " more" in this case. I also didnt even know Bozo plays guitar, but all in all, this guitar is mighty sweet.

I use this in a church playing rhythm electric guitar. I am currently running it directly into the PA through a digitech rp500. I'm really loving the tones I'm getting out of this. I got the guitar on a stupid deal of the day. Its a lot of instrument for the money at that price point and with the hard shell case. Intonation was spot on out of the box and it stays in tune.

My one complaint would be around quality control. The instrument jack is constantly coming loose, and the strap locks tend to unscrew entirely from where it was drilled into the guitar. Wouldn't expect issues like that on a guitar at this price. Not impressed in that area, and I'm not sure if there's an easy fix.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5623 Electromatic Center-Block Bono (RED) Signature Model Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with Hardshell Case:

First of all, let me address the volume control of this guitar. It is not defective or a flaw. It is the way it's designed to be. I own two Japanese reissues, a Country Gent and a Duo Jet and they are both like that. The Bono is actually easier to dial in, because my other two have the tone control switching and dual volume controls plus a master volume. The volume and tone pots on the Bono interact with each other. Roll off the tone and the output is decreased. This is "old school" wiring. Set the volume of the guitar to the lower point of the drop-off and adjust your amp's gain and volume to get a nice juicy sound. Now, when you roll up the guitar volume to max, it's like you've engaged a transparent boost.

Yes, this guitar is a quality instrument. I was afraid it would be cheesy and overpriced. It's not, but if you can snag one at a discount then go for it. Fit, finish, switching all on par with my Japanese reissues. A nice looking rosewood fretboard with good, smallish frets. The Blacktop Filtertrons sound really good. Played through a Vox Nightrain with Celestion Greenback. Nice throaty sound, no mud. Pickups are medium output. I really don't care for the white (with Red emblem) pickguard and truss rod cover. Will replace with a black truss rod cover and either remove the pickguard or replace with black or muted silver. A facsimile of Bono's signature is on the back of the headstock, OK, sure. Comes with a quality hardshell case. Same type of case as my overpriced Duo Jet reissue.

I can echo a lot of the other reviews - the guitar was great right out of the box. Very solid feel of a well built guitar. The pickups are great and very strong and bright - it does seem like you have to turn the volume up on the pickups to get them to perform (the review above where they mention a flat sound may be related to not turning up the pickup volume enough ?) but I love the sound. The guitar stays in tune and sounds great even if not plugged in.

Only minor 'con' is that the pickup jack was a bit loose and I'm not 100% sure how best to tighten it w/o causing some trouble underneath the hood.

Very impressed and Musicians Friend was very easy to work with - thanks for the great deal !

This was a "Stupid Deal of the Day" item, and I own Fender Strat American Deluxe and top of the line Gibson Les Paul Standard Premium, and Takamine's and Martins, Taylors, LTD, Blue Ridge, and others, and this is my favorite guitar. The neck feel, playability and sound in my tube amps, and you'll buy a costlier guitar, but you'll not find one anywhere close to this, for the price I got it. About 1/2 of what it list for at MRSP. I'd recommend it over most any for any venue you are going to play. I am simply amazed and I've been playing for over 50 years.

Received my guitar today and was ready for the usual set-up....But to my surprise the truss rod did not need tweaking moved on to setting intonation and changing to my favorite strings but to my amazement the intonation was absolutely spot on...I have never before not had to anything to a new guitar .... I am really blown away with this guitar for the money it's impossible to do any better with any other brand at any price.Im not a Gibson snob anymore....

Almost didnt buy it because of the ugly pickguard..... But that was an easy fix, found a place online that makes whatever you want, and matching trus rod cover....... My guitar played perfect..after i had a professional setup done... The nut was pretty high... The neck has a nice slim comfortable feel to it.... The color isnt quite as bright as it appears online....

I've had consitstanly good luck with open-box purchases from MF, and this Gretsch is no exception. Probably the best buy in a semi-hollow arch-top. Very much worth the price and one of the nicest quality imports I've seen, including the case, which is not always the case. And red IS my favorite color.
