Don't Forget

Authentic Hagstrom flair and versatile tones.

The H-II and H-III were introduced in 1965, so 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of these iconic guitars. Known for their quirky switches and easy playability, they quickly achieved wide popularity. Favorites among punk and grunge bands looking for a hard-rocking individualist statement, their audience is also quite diverse: from artists like Joe Satriani, whose first guitar was a Hagstrom H-III, to Aaron North (of Nine Inch Nails) who still has H-IIs and H-IIIs in his guitar arsenal. Many people have been asking for these classics to be re-issued, and we at Hagstrom are happy to comply with lovingly recreated and updated versions of these great classics.

A comfortably profiled Canadian Maple neck is bolted to a hand-selected American Alder body insuring that the original attack and “bite” of the H-II and H-III is maintained. The classic 6-in-line Hagstrom headstock design, used for the first production of H-IIs and H-IIIs, has been slightly updated, and the “Vintage Tremar” has been re-engineered for functional improvements without sacrificing its original appearance.

Hagstrom has taken great care in recreating the original pickups, and the new “Retro-S” pickups do an excellent job of matching the originals’ sonic glory. Gain-shaping functionality is enhanced by incorporating Hagstrom’s new RC-Circuit into the volume control, which allows for volume reduction without the loss of that high frequency “shimmer.” Case sold separately.

Not worth the money

from Orlando

Comments about Hagstrom Retroscape Series H-III Electric Guitar:

I purchased this Hagstrom III for nostalgic / sentimental reasons, based on a memory of the same guitar from 1975 that was owned by a family member. I wanted to buy it from him back then, but he wouldn't sell it. So when the reissue appeared this year, I added one to my collection based on that childhood experience. Otherwise, I would return it. It plays and sounds okay, but is comparable in quality to a Squire Strat at best, and should have been priced accordingly. I did perform a setup, as it arrived unplayable, and got it functioning well enough, but I had to tighten up all of the hardware because it was loose and rattling. This included the output jack, which necessitated removing and modifying with small rubber washers to stop the rattling sounds created when playing.

The real pet peeve was the protective plastic covering the scratch plate. The pickups are installed over the plastic, preventing a clean removal. I had to remove the strings and entire pickguard assembly in order to remove all of the unsightly traces of plastic that remained after removing the main piece. It took about an hour to correct this issue. All in all, not a very fun way to spend the first day with a new guitar.

For the money, many other companies make a much better playing guitar, so I would pass on this one and check out Epiphone, MIM Fender or any other manufacturer. I am keeping this one only because ot the sentimental reason stated above.

Comments about Hagstrom Retroscape Series H-III Electric Guitar:

My first guitar was a hagstrom II. Our garage band sound was built around the sound cuz I was the lead guitar and I played louder...I played it through an ampeg gemini II. We recorded a record in a fancy NYC recording studio in 1967. Still have the recording of the scratchy record but I remember how cool it sounded in the studio. When I got a strat I felt like it was a serious upgrade. I thought about buying a vintage hagstrom II or III but didn't think it was worth a grand. My brother still has his blue cromwell which looks like the futurama.....very rare. I played it at a friends party and have a decent tape recording of it.....all 3 pickups on sounds like rubber bands....very funky. Had to have this for my collection. It is a faithful reproduction of the original. The jury is out on the resinator fret board material. I don't trust a non wood material. Bad quality control on testing the electronics at the factory...all messed up had to do a change out....second one was fine. I wish I could say "I can't put this guitar down" but I can't say that. But its a keeper and I'll have fun recording with it.

Comments about Hagstrom Retroscape Series H-III Electric Guitar:

Great looking guitar. Low action, good tone and fun to play. However one screw fell out of the neck pickup ring and the one next to it was was stripped and loose. The thumbscrew holding the tremolo arm was also stripped and useless. Maybe I just got a lemon and there are ones with better craftsmanship out there, but this one was unacceptable. I returned it.
