OVERVIEW

The Viking with class.

The Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar covers all genres from blues/rock to jazz/fusion and back again. With an arched, flamed maple body, its looks are as sweet as its tone. Two Hagstrom humbuckers, combined with the resonant semi-hollow body, provide plenty of power. And no Hagstrom is complete without their famous, fast-playing neck. The Viking has the patented H-Expander truss rod which provides tension at either end and runs the entire length of the neck. The rigid yet lightweight alloy truss rod allows for very low action and a thin set maple neck.

Another Hagstrom exclusive, the resinator fretboard is an extraordinary, homogeneous wood composite that maintains a strong fundamental harmonic and eliminates wolf tones. It offers the articulate sound of high-quality ebony but with more consistency and durability. Silky smooth, reliable, and fast.

The self-lubricating graphite composite nut is much harder than bone or plastic resulting in more string vibration through the neck. Tuning is also improved and string binding is eliminated by self-lubrication.

A long travel tune-o-matic-style bridge and trapeze tailpiece further increase tone, sustain, and intonation quality. 18:1 gear ratio machine heads ensure fully accurate tuning.

The Viking's high-grade polyester finish is hard, smooth, and more dense than polyurethane, so its guaranteed to look great and provide excellent protection and sonic performance. Case sold separately.

I did a ton of research on this guitar before I bought it. This is my 8th guitar and it out shines the rest by far. The tuners are solidly constructed and keep the guitar well in tune. The tuneomatic bridge make it very easy to change strings while providing awesome resonance. The sustain is excellent due to some special trademark designs that you won't get anywhere else. Overall this is guitar is a great buy. My first impression after playing it is that this Hagstrom is comparable to guitars that cost $2,000 by Gibson or Ibanez. You can expect clear, smooth tones that are very desirable for Jazz, and if you throw some distortion in front you can expect powerful, crisp gains that works great for rock, alternative, blues, and much more. I mostly bought this guitar because it was very versatile with playing different styles and it does just that. As someone who loves distortion, I was pleasantly surprised by how much edge this guitar has for a semi hollow body. The only thing stopping this from getting a perfect score is I experienced some sharp frets on the neck that I had to file down. Once I did that and lowered the bridge saddle in order to lower the high action as well as put on a different set of strings to my taste, the guitar was incredible. This is one sexy looking axe that I highly recommend. Just stop thinking and buy it already! You will not regret your purchase!

I had one of these things 30 years ago and foolishly traded it off, wish I still had that one and they still had this one.In the rush to production they should trade quality for quantity, especially at the beginning of a product reintroduction, to avoid bad reviews. Hagstrom"s quality control will have to improve if they wish to compete with Ibanez. Chinese guitars come with barbed wire for strings, that's normal, but why they skimp on things like switches and hardware I don't know. The pick-up switch is noisy and the jack was loose. The medallion on the tail piece was missing. The screw that holds on the pick guard isn't flush and the strings between the bridge and the tail-piece ring when you play. (I dampened them with foam ear plugs) I don't know why they choose to use that style of bridge on a semi-hollow body. It sounds a little uneven, is that what equalizers are for? I bought this guitar out of a sense of nostalgia, now that that is out of the way I'll be looking closely at the Ibanez artcores. With a little love it'll be playable but it's not the Hagstrom I remember.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Owned one in the late '60s and foolishly sold it. This reissue is a great value in affordable semi-hollow instruments - surprisingly good fit and finish, sweet cosmetics, fast action that Hagstrom is famous for. Crummy pickup selector switch, but easily fixed with a Switchcraft replacement. Runs rings around 335s costing almost three times as much.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

There is something about this guitar that has hit the nail on the head. Its a culmination of alot of factors, the tone wins, the feel of the guitar wins and the look of the guitar wins. Thats enough for me.Rock On!
When i first opened the box , i was with a friend of mine who is a mad tone junky like myself. neither of us had ever owned a semi hollow body,i had only played one once a few weeks before (an epiphone casino). We both just stared at it for at least 2 minutes, slowly circling the box we had sat on the ground, we didnt touch it.. just admired it. From the bridge, to the block inlays (nicely rounded edges and a cool double stripe on the 12th fret.). The headstock, the unusual but cool looking machine heads, and the nice chrome finish on the pickup covers and bridge.
This guitar is so nice to look at. You cant explain it unless you see it but the finish is superb, It isnt as big as thought it would be, i dont feel like im holding an acoustic guitar, it is so comfortable to play and it looks awesome.
The quality is great, the guitar has a 'regal' look to it but its not over the top, its just perfect.. Just enough class added. The volume and treble knobs seem fine, not cheap feeling like some guitars, they didnt have any crackle in them when adjusting while plugged in.
The guitar sounds nice acoustically , not as loud as a semi acoustic obviously but the sound resonates nicely. I didnt see any scratches on it at all and that is a credit to MF as i purchased a mint condition used Viking. . Any doubt i had about it being mint were dismissed as soon as i looked at it. IT IS MINT.
Bening a used guitar i got a$100 discount on the new price and with the valentines day 14% off.. it was a steal. I was so meant to have this guitar. It was waiting for me.
So value you yes.. easily..i have 15 guitars.. i think its 15 maybe 17 but this guitar is my favourite already. If you love rock n roll, and you have played gibsons and fenders and whatever.. but you have never played one of these or any semi hollow body guitar, you need to do it. This Hagstrom hands down is a better guitar than the Epiphone casino i tried at a store a few weeks ago. the body is not as thin as say a strat or SG but its not thick at all, its.. perfect.. It is lighter than my les paul, it has a cool old school look, the bridge pick up loves my Vox amp on crunch mode, artificail harmonics are very easy, the neck is fast, almost like my washburn guitar, easier than my SG to run quick lines, . You get this cool feed back/sustain on bends, its inspiring, i took skin off i loved the bend sound so much, add a little reverb to this baby and you can never EVER go back. I havent even got to the neck p[ickup yet, its NOT muddy as i thought it might be, it has a full body sound but there is a sharpness to it. There is nothing i can say that is bad about it. I cannot compare it to a $3-4k gibson semi holow body or a top of the line Gretsch, as i have not played one. But i will happily put my Hagstrom up against any guitar.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

To say the least, this is an excellent guitar. I have been playing guitar for 20 years now and this is easily the best feeling and most versatile instrument I own, or have played. To let you know, I own a Gibson Les Paul Studio, a Peavey T-27, a PRS Tremonti SE, and a Gibson S-1, and the Hag is my number one to play. I don't have a gig at the moment, in between, but this one is my number one go to. It stays in tune, the tone is great (granted I love humbuckers), and it looks like a million dollars. If you want a killer deal, pick this guitar.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I love this guitar although I didn't buy it from MF (my mistake). It is simply the finest guitar I have ever played and I've been playing since I was 10 years old (I'm 58 now). Needleass to say I've played a lot of guitars. The composite fretboard is practically friction free which makes the Hagstrom brag about being the fastest neck in the world of guitars true (in my humble opinion). The guitar is spectacularly beautifull, I still get a rush when I open the case seeing the curly maple top, back and sides and say that's mine. When I plug it into my Peavey Delta Blues (tube type amp) it sounds awsome. The tone I get from this baby is second to none. I bought it sight unseen off the web and haven't had one regret. If you're looking for a great guitar that will hold its own against guitars costing two and three times as much, look no further this is the one.

    My go to guitar

    By Richard Carew

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Of all my guitars I like the fretboard and neck on the Hagstrom the best. The double cutaway frees up the entire upper register of the fretboard. The tone and the fit and finish are second to none. My hagstrom came gig ready and its proving to be my favorite guitar.
My guitar came all set up . I had to lower the bridge a little but the neck was straight and the frets were clean. The fit and finish were perfect. I had no loose switches and no loose plugs.
As I said above everything was perfect on this guitar that I got. The fretboard is second to none. I have a $3000 custom made dreadnought that I don't use as much as I use the Hagstrom. The Hagstrom is , well, more plasticy than the dreadnought but the Hagstrom has a bound fretboard and frets that are smooth and well finished. I can't say enough about the beauty of this guitar the curly maple is luminescent in any light.
The Hagstrom Viking is one of the best deals I've had. I have two Taylors and a custom made dreadnought and a custrom made SG style guitar, I use the Hagstrom almost exclusively. I am learning the scales and find I prefer the fretboard and neck on the Hagstrom. The pickups are better than the Gibson Classic Humbuckers on my SG style guitar.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Many of my guitar heroes have played semi-hollow guitars like the Gibson ES-335. But when I tried out a few of them, both old and new, I never enjoyed playing them. Didn't seem right for a $2K+ guitar! So when I saw the Hagstrom Viking Deluxe at such a low price, I went for it. I received the Viking in June, and have been playing it a lot. I LOVE IT! A LOT!(FYI: My current guitars are a '92 Fender American Strat, Carvin California Carved Top, and Parker P-42. I have been playing for 25 years. I play in live rock and theatre bands, and record at home. I love tube amps, and have even built a few.)Another reviewer summed up the Viking's shortcomings: "The pick-up switch is noisy and the jack was loose. The medallion on the tail piece was missing. The screw that holds on the pick guard isn't flush and the strings between the bridge and the tail-piece ring when you play. (I dampened them with foam ear plugs) I don't know why they choose to use that style of bridge on a semi-hollow body."True on my guitar, too, except that the switch isn't noisy, and the medallion hasn't quite popped off yet. But I can live with these details, because the guitar itself is great. Wonderful neck and fretwork. Good woodwork and finish, and most important, excellent sound.Try it for yourself!!

    Unbelievable!

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Before I get started, I would like to point out that I've never taken the time to write a review on this site, despite owning and playing a wide varity of guitars, I just didn't feel like my input was necessary. That all changed when this baby arrived at my doorstep. The first thing I did was change out the factory strings and check the intonation, string height, and the neck bend. Everything, and I do mean everything, was set up perfect right out of the box...no modifications were needed. The finish was absolutely stunning with the flamed maple top over the Natural color. Needless to say, Hagstrom's Quality Control department seems right on top of it these days. But how does it sound?I plugged this bad boy into a friends' 1960's Fender Princeton. I wanted to compare the Viking Deluxe to his mid 70's Gibson 335. Right off the bat we noticed that the stock pickups were far hotter than the 335's...not even close. And the sound....well...even another friend agreed that it was as good, if not better, than his 335 (which is a phenomenal guitar). The cleans are silky smooth on all three pickup settings...and this baby really has some bark when you kick in the overdrive. In all honesty, I've played many guitars similar in this price range, and the Viking Deluxe exceeds them all...and is highly comparable with axe's four times the cost.My only worry with the Viking is the longterm durability of the composite fretboard. I don't think anybody really knows how it'll hold up 30+ years from now, but for the price, if I get 30 years out of this thing, I guess it was worth it.Overall, this is a special guitar that you should deffinitely add to your collection. It'll probably overtake the Telcaster as my primary weapon of choice. The Viking clearly holds its own with the Gibsons and Fenders of the world for a fraction of the cost. Trust me, you'll enjoy it.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

This guitar is absolutely amazing! I played, and then bought this guitar at the music store I teach guitar at. I was blown away; it can go from Lamb of God, to B.B. King. I play a lot of heavy metal, and does this thing nail it! Switch to the neck pick-up, turn back the volume, and turn back the tone and you got yourself a killer blues guitar. It?s a very versatile guitar for sure!Did I mention the neck? I play Jackson guitars for the fast neck, but I can shred on this just as well as my Jackson?s. It's incredible.Everything on this guitar speaks quality. If you pick this up you won't be disappointed.

    Hagstrom Viking Deluxe

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Have had this guitar almost a year now. Usually play a '74 Strat, but was looking for that deep bluesy sound, since that is what has become an exclusive genre of late. This guitar is really very, very good on all counts. After some initial adjustments (toggle switch was quite loose, as was the cord plug) it played very nicely and showed incredible not ebending ability and ease of neck positioning for chords and lead runs. Took it with me on January '08 Bluescruise, in hard case, checked it on airline, and luggage on ship - barely needed to be re-tuned, it held like a charm. Played on cruise and this baby held it's own with all the strats, gibsons, and myraid others that made their appearance on board. The tone was deep and dirty when needed, and when I wanted an edge a flick of the toggle and it scratched out some nasty bits of sound that totally surprised many on board. Most wonderful is the neck, it's composite make up is so great for vibrating notes al la B.B.King, or for super serious bending it is a joy to work with. I'd highly recommend the Hagstrom Viking Deluxe to anyone who wants a solid, good priced guitar for almosts any kind of music genre. Oh yeh it looks so damn sweet peopel are always commenting on it too - which doesn't hurt either.

    My favorite guitar hands down...

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I like to play blues and blues-rock. This guitar is really something. The neck plays real smooth and I love the fingerboard (silky!). Other then that, the stock pickups are actually decent. They play real nice on clean, very melodic. With gain, it was alright but I like my blues to be a little more dirtier and hotter so I swapped them for some seymour pups. The seymours are definately hotter on gain and works exceptionally well with this guitar, but the clean on the seymours imho isn't as "full" as the stock pickups (they are a little thin in general). Maybe my memory is joggled, but I'm pretty sure I liked the clean more on the stock pups so other words, yah this guitar really isn't too shabby right out of the box. Great finish too but you can see some traces of the wiring thru the f-holes (not a big deal but still). All-in-all, this guitar rocks especially if you wanna do the blues!

When I opened the box, my wife asked me are those things supposed to fall out? They were the washers for the input jack. Not going to lie, took a lot of time and frustration.to connect. Don't let that dissuade you from considering a Hagstrom . I have the Viking Deluxe natural. Killer blues, classic rock, even metal. If not familiar with Hagstrom, the necks are super fast. Even though not made in Sweden anymore, the neck is still comfortable and fast. Started taking guitar lessons when I was 11 or 12. Can't remember what I had at the time, but everything on my guitar teacher's Hagstrom was easier to play. The sound, the feel , the finish is fantastic. I got over the initial jack problem, and haven't put it down. Like it better than my Gibson es 137, Epiphone Casino, and Gretsch Electromatic

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I am primarily motivated to write this review to exclaim my astonishment at the versatility of this guitar. It's obviously great for jazz and blues, but also does rock, hard rock, and yes, EVEN METAL incredibly well. The guitar produces noticeable feedback at high-gain levels, but it is controllable and actually quite musical sounding. The fit and finish on the Viking Deluxe is really top-notch. I recommend that you seriously consider one of these before buying much more expensive semi-hollow bodies. Also, I own a white Viking Deluxe, although white doesn't seem to be an option here, which is strange.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

This is a great hollowbody that sounds exellent pluged in or even not. Its definitly still loud enough to play unpluged that sounds real musically, like a piano in a way. The pick ups in my oppinion sounded better, clearer than the gibson counterpart and it looks a lil more unique than the blandish 335 styles. The neck is so thin it makes it one of the nicest things on hagstroms. I have a metalic gold deluxe that I didnt buy hear that I got for about half the price youd pay hear. It wasnt flawless.. a couple highly noticeable dings in the paint beneath the great finish is probably why he was selling them that cheap as "brand new". Oh well its going to get dented anyways. But Im sure the quality of the ones at MF are a 5. If your looking for a gibson hollowbody dont count out the Viking as I liked it better and get something not everyone has.

      Cherryburst Viking Deluxe

      By pixelbox

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I am a hobbyist guitar player, as well as a hobbyist guitar re-builder/re-finisher, and I purchased a Viking Deluxe in their cherryburst finish, and I am very happy with my purchase. The finish looks really good and has a warm, rich look to it. It did have a few (barely noticeable) over-spray marks, but I am very "type-A" when it comes to inspecting stuff like that, so I bet the average guitarist wouldn't even notice. Along with the art-deco tuning keys, very clean inlay work, and that great tail piece makes for one sexy looking guitar. After I did an initial set-up (neck had slight bow-down, and I love an arrow-straight neck), the only problem I came across was the saddle at the G string. I ran out of adjusting room and I'm going to have to reverse the saddle in order to get my G string perfectly intonated, but the rest of the strings intonated very quickly. The neck has a 12" radius and the saddles matched this perfectly, though, so that was nice. After all is said and done, though, the guitar feels and plays great.I LOVE the way this guitar sounds! Clean, dirty, neck pick-up, bridge pick-up, you'll get a pleasant tones in wide variety. It has a nice punchy sound to it, and is brighter than a lot of other semi-hollow body guitars, and I can tell this baby is going to stand out nicely in a mix.I just might buy another Hagstrom (Deluxe F) because of this. You get a lot of class for the cash!

I purchased this guitar (Viking Custom in Natural finish) during March 2007 and I must say it is an outstanding guitar. I have played on and off since the mid 60's when I was a teenager (showing my age. ouch) I have owned brands including Gibson?s, PRS, Gretsch?s, Rickenbacker?s, Schecter?s, Fenders, Harmony, Heritage, and Ibanez. Unfortunately I have sold off many of my guitars which I should have kept; I could have made a killing in today's vintage market. My first Ahlstrom was way back in 1966 (strat type). This new Viking is exceptional quality for the money. The neck IS the fastest on the planet, as they say. The resonator fret board is quite similar to the ebony on my Gretsch Country Gent and Gibson BB King. The Natural Flame is just beautiful. The tuning keys stay in tune. I put on 12's and jazz chords just ring on. Beautiful tone my guitar teacher thought this was an unbelievable buy for the money. I highly recommend this guitar. In my opinion in knocks the socks off the Epi's 335/Shearatons and the Ibanez Artcore. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Lets be serious...for the money you most likely can't find a better semi-solid instrument. I have 4 Hagstroms and all have come - out of the box - needing very little set up to play well. My Deluxe Viking is the red burst and looks awesome. the finish equals almost any USA made instrument. Most of the Chinese guitars need serious fret leveling and crowning and electronics need to be replaced (including some of the Epiphones I've played). I can say that pickups and general electronics have been great for these Hag's. The Super's have coil tap which is a really nice feature. I read some of the other reviews and will have to say that I've never had a bad fret job on any that I've owned. I have almost everything from Fender to Gibson to Ibanez, etc. and I really like these Hagstroms. I play mine on the stage and for serious practice. For the money you get great looks, sound and play-a-bility and you won't fear taking it out of the case and playing it on stage.
