OVERVIEW

A semi-hollow electric loaded with innovative features.

The Hagstrom Viking II electric guitar features a double-cutaway semi-hollow basswood body, 24-3/4" scale UltraLux bolt-on maple neck, 6-inline headstock, and 22-fret Resinator composite fingerboard. Hagstrom's Custom 58 uncovered humbuckers are optimized for a fat, warm vintage tone. The original Hagstrom Viking guitar was made famous in 1968 by the king himself: Elvis Presley!

Revolutionary neck design
The Viking II and all other Hagstrom electric guitars comes with the patented H-Expander Truss Rod. Providing tension at either end and running the entire length of the neck, the rigid yet lightweight alloy truss rod allows for a very low action and thin neck, two factors that were instrumental in earning Hagstrom its reputation for churning out incredibly fast-playing guitars. The fretboard is made from Hagstrom's own Resinator wood, a composite wood that is homogeneous in nature and is more stable than any standard wood product. It is the perfect fingerboard material in that it eliminates wolf tones or hot spots, and it has an articulate sound like high quality ebony, but without the problems associated with ebony.

Custom hardware
With unique aesthetics and ensuring accurate tuning, Hagstrom's exclusive 18:1 gear ratio machine heads are featured on all electric models. The Hagstom Viking II guitar features the Self-lubricating Graphite Composite Nut that further ensures increased sustain and vibration through improved transfer of energy to the neck.

Select Materials
Hagstrom uses only the finest select tone woods and figured wood stocks to enhance the sound and beauty of each electric guitar. Carefully selected hard tropical mahogany tone woods are used on the body to produce a powerful and warm sound, and North American hard rock maple provides a bright articulate tone.

Jaw-Dropping Finish
Hagstrom guitars feature a high-grade polyester finish, which is much harder, smoother and denser while also producing much better sonic performance than polyurethane finishes used by other guitar companies.

Since 1958, Hagstrom has been combining acclaimed design with premium materials, unique hardware, and innovative manufacturing techniques to create magnificent guitars known among guitarists for their playability, beauty, and durability.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking II Electric Guitar:

I notice this is no longer available so the comments may be moot unless the item is restocked. I had no intention of buying another guitar, after my standard telecaster purchase about 6 years ago. But when I read the reviews and saw the price I snapped up the Viking II Black Burst model which was the only color left. By the time I took it out of the box, the guitar had become unavailable on this site. For some reason it came with just an allen wrench, no documentation of any kind, or warranty card, etc., but was well packed and looked brand new.
When I took it out of the box I was amazed at how beautiful it was. White cream binding on the front and back of the body, neck, headstock and f-holes, beautiful black/dusky burst finish, chrome hardware, uncovered black dual humbucker pickups, and a resinator fretboard that looks like ebony. The tuner keys feel a bit small but work fine. It came set up with 10-46 strings which is what I use. Intonation was between 10 to 25 cents off on the A, D, and G strings, spot on for the others. Not enough of a problem for me to mess with. Being a full hollowbody, the guitar weighs about 7-1/4 lbs and is about 4 inches longer, end to end, than my other guitars. Well balanced with the guitar strap pegs.
I then plugged it in and I got no sound from the guitar with the pickup selector in the bridge or middle position. Instant heartbreak. Looking at the guitar I saw the jack nut was very loose. Making a hook out of a heavy duty paper clip, I inserted it into the jack, pulled back on the hook to put tension on it and tightened the nut. I felt inside the f-hole for loose wires or loose solder, felt nothing. Plugged it back in and everything worked perfectly. About then I wished I had bought the extended warranty.
Today I emailed Hagstrom about the warranty and got an email back from usmusiccorp stating the warranty was "technically one year". Then I did an internet search and found a usmusiccorp web page for submitting Hagstrom Warranty card info, that said the Hagstrom guitars were warranteed for life to the original owner. I filled out the online warranty form and submitted it via the web page, and sent another email back to usmusiccorp asking which info was correct, lifetime or one year warranty? It's after business hours so no reply yet. But with no physical warranty card or even a mention or link to registration or warranty on either the Hagstrom or usmusiccorp web sites (I just found Hagstrom registration online form through google) I don't know if either lifetime or one year is correct or enforceable. That's the only reason I am rating this as 4 stars instead of 5. Hagstrom should put this warranty (or lack of)info out there clearly and definitievely, but they don't, not on their website, not on their product info on this website, and not with any documentation or warranty card in the box.
When I finally plugged the guitar into my ZoomR16 recorder late last night, added the uk blues distortion insert effect, put on my headphones and played the guitar ... I absolutely loved the sound. This was the smooth buttery distortion with subtle breakup of notes that I was hoping for when I read these reviews and bought the guitar. Any other guitar I own makes fuzz or distortion sound either jagged or muddy. With this guitar the tones are horn like. The notes and pitch are clearly identifiable, but the quality of the sound is smooth fuzz and buttery. Plugged into a tube amp today without any pedals, just using the amp gain and guitar volume knobs I got the same horn like, smooth buttery distortion tones I wanted.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking II Electric Guitar:

This guitar at its original price was perhaps one of the top values at its price point. When the item went on closeout I immediately jumped and when it arrived I cried. It was incredibly well constructed, played great, sounded great and unfortunately was left handed!I had to ship it back. If you are left handed, get one now!

      The wait was worth it

Comments about Hagstrom Viking II Electric Guitar:

I waited for years to get a Hagstrom guitar that was affordable, and now that I finally have one, all I can say is "the wait was worth it"! I couldn't believe the look of the Viking. It is beautiful. I haven't put it down since I recieved it which was just two days ago. The sound is incredible.I love this guitar. The style, the finish, the tone, the whole package. The Viking is at the top of my favorite guitars. I will be using it this weekend at a gig and I know it will perform beautifully. Some reviews have said it was just a step down from the Gibson ES335. I disagree. I have heard them both on review websites and I can say without a doubt, that the Hagstrom Viking is egual to the Gibson ES335.

      Better Than Expected

      By Kerry Barrett

Comments about Hagstrom Viking II Electric Guitar:

Have had this guitar for a week now and it's all that I've been playing. Like it very much, more than I expected. I play in a 3 piece "classic" hard rock band. Got this for certain types of songs, clean acoustic sounds etc., but was pleasantly surprised to find that it covers that and a lot more. It's got some guts when you need them. Definately worth the price, the quality is that of a much more pricey guitar. My main guitar is a PRS and I can say I enjoy playing this Hag as much,
With the 4 control knobs and 3 pickup selection you can really tailor the tone to how you want it.

      Great little surprise

      By Anonymous

Comments about Hagstrom Viking II Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar about a month ago and I'm in love. The only problem I've had with it is the intonation, but that's probably as much the fault of travel and weather as anything else. The tone is superb, if a bit heavy on the bass. The dual HBs are some of the smoothest sounding pups I've ever used, and I just had a Highway One strat stolen from me not too long ago. The guitar is well balanced on a strap, sits even. It's very light compared to what I'm used to which kind of put me off at first. It felt like a toy. But once I got used to it, I love it. Being a semi-hollow I was worried about how it will handle feedback. I'm surprised that it does as well as it does. It is by no means perfect, but it's much easier to tame than other semi's I've heard. I got it out of the box with no dead frets at all, no buzz, slight intonation problem. That's getting fixed this week. On to the aesthetics. This guitar is gorgeous. I got the cherry red finish and I get compliments on it from everybody. It is simply beautiful. The custom tuning knobs from hagstrom are great. The visual effect is great but they also help to grip during tuning. I got this from another dealer for a lot cheaper and at the price I got it, I might as well have stolen it. But even at the musicians friend price, it's a steal. This is, I'm convinced, the best guitar you will get for this money if you're wanting to play country, southern rock, blues, or jazz. I'm happy with this purchase.

      Can't Put This Baby Down

      By hagsandgibs

      from Florida

Comments about Hagstrom Viking II Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar 3 days ago and have literally only put it down maybe 6 times. I own it in the Cosmic Black Burst and wasn't fortunate enough to get a better burst for my buck. Finish aside, this guitar is brilliant. The tuners hold perfectly and the self-lubricating nut is a very nice addition. The action on it was perfect for me right out of the box (only 3 mm or so off from the frets at fret 22). I wish I could buy more of the Hagstrom pickups on this guitar because they are some of the best sounding pickups I have ever played on. I play through a Peavey Vypyr Tube 120W Amp Head and a Valveking 412 Cabinet and I only get feedback if I come right up to the speakers, but that's expected. No problems at all with any of the wiring and the Tune-O-Matic bridge is a perfect addition to this baby. I have played on Gibson ES-335s and Gretsch White Falcons and I'd take the Hagstrom Viking II over both of them. Why drop an extra couple thousand dollars for a guitar that is (in my opinion) better than a Gibson or Gretsch? Buy this, you won't regret it.
