Comments about Hagstrom Viking P Electric Guitar:
I'd been eyeing this axe for about a year. I pulled the trigger when there was a special discount coupon during the Holidays.
Unpacking: I bought the black model. It's better looking in person than the picture here. It came without a case (no problem as I have a few extras) and was packed with a guitar in mind. My wife and others have commented "it's a beauty".
Playing and action: The first thing I noticed was the string height was a bit lower than the Gibson Les Paul and G&L S500 guitars I use most. I went through a few string bends and every note was clear- no fret buzzing or muting because of low action. I'm guessing this could be the "H-bar" in the neck that gives the neck the stability. It's a pleasure to play and the action and intonation were spot on out of the box.
Sound: I bought this guitar because it has P90's (Hagstrom calls them "P50's". It's a voice I've been wanting for a while. After playing it on a few different amps I'm loving how versatile it is! On my Marshall JVM it seems to break up a little sooner than even the Les Paul with humbuckers. That's fine with me! It's also not quite as bright as I imagined it would be but that's fine with me too! Turning the volume on the guitar down cleans things up nicely and when you get into Marshall rock territory it's awesome- growls like a cross between a Strat and a Les Paul! On my Vox AC15 I'm digging it even more! Very nice sparkly clean sounds with the treble on the amp turned wide open and the bass about half. In fact, it has inspiring-me-to-play-more sweetness on this amp. All in all, it's a very versatile sounding instrument.
Bottom line: For the buck it's pretty hard to beat. Is it a Gibson or such? I'm not sure as I don't have a Gibson with P90's. However, I'll say that results beat logic- always! The logic is a higher priced Gibson should sound and play better. Frankly, I don't care because the results of working this guitar through it's paces are awesome!
