I wanted something different. It's not that I own a couch full of expensive guitars, I don't, it's the P-90s. I own four guitars now and all less than $350 each. Since my collection includes a Squier Strat ($350 in 1983)(JV19129), Squier '51 Modified ($150) and a worn g400 Epiphone ($300) and this one does something none of them do and it's all on the low end. The reason I didn't rate "Features" a 10 because I can't get the highs I get from the Squiers and I thought with single coils I would. For $200 it's a good deal! The intonation was only off on one string and the action is as it should be. The neck is a little fatter than I am used to but it's not a problem. Wood and paint, beutiful, lots of grain and no paint problems at all! I guess it's Basswood but.I give Hofner credit for this Chianese made piece. I understand the pickups are German P-90s with plenty off punch and as I said, not so good highs. I recommend this as good value no matter what you play for a guitar. Overall a 10. Maybe I got lucky as I bought it online but for me, it was a good buy and fits nicely with my other good value on a low buget guitars. Buy it.
I bought my Hofner Colorama Custom on a lark. I knew I was taking a chance buying a Chinese-produced axe. Well, set any concerns aside, because this guitar will not dissapoint. In a world full of Strat and Les Paul clones, this guitar will set you apart. Hofner must supervise this Chinese shop closely, because the quality is quite good. Soldering, sheilding, hardware and finish is good. The inlay work is a nice touch. The binding on the fretbourd showed a little adhesive excess, but you had to look for it. The neck is fast, the fretwork neat. The tuners are real Grovers, not clones. The mini-humbuckers sound great, reminds me of LP buckers. The pickups are German-made Hofners.Set the action up upon arrival, which (as is usually the case) was on the high side. The lowest action I could get is adequate for me. It won't play like a Rick out of the box. I adjusted the truss rod once (normal winter to summer adjustment). Otherwise the neck is straight and stable. This guitar has great sustain, too. It's a $200. guitar folks, but it is a bargain.
This little guitar has a wide variety of sounds and came close to in tune. It is a great buy as it is, a fret dressing and a little adjusting and it would be a great stage axe. The pick ups are great, as are the Grover tuners. Oh, and it is ultra light weight, about half what my 69 SG weighs. I plan to dress the frets and add a bigsby B-5., and play it!
I purchased this guitar on a whim because the Dot 335 Epi I bought was less than expected. I new from past experience that Hofner made a great guitar. Contrary to advertised "German Made" hype, this guitar comes from China. That's not all bad but truth in advertising folks...Instead of chrome covers on the P-90's they came to me black plastic. The name HOFNER on the headstock was crooked and looked like something an amateur would have carved. It was also set up like a Les Paul with two tone and two volume controls with a three way switch... again, not like advertised. Now the pluses...This guitar plays extremely well and it rocks with the P-90's. I have a Carvin Bel Aire and a Marshall VS265 and this guitar has the best sound! I have 8 other guitars from a Rick 370 to an Epi 335 and all have their stron points. This guitar's best features are the P-90's.The medium/large frets are finished and I did not need to do work on them. Intonation out of the box surprised me... it was dead nuts on.For the price, I think I got the better end of the deal.
My friend bought one a three weeks ago, He let me play it. I played it till my fingers bled. Well not really but you know what I mean. I love the way it looks! It's the best looking guitar I've ever seen and it plays great too! It could have a lot better features though. It's a good deal!
Hofner has taken some attributes from the likes of the SG & the Les Paul and rolled them into a tight little guitar. The finish is absolutely stunning. The plastic looks a little cheap though. I have the "Transparent Cherry" and the woodgrain showing through the clear is fabulous. The neck is set solid into the body too.The guitar has some weight to it, which I don't mind. The action is so sweet! The guitar even arrived "in tune" but with many value guitars, you will need to set it up.
