Jazz Guitarist great John Stowell's signature guitar.

From the introspective lament of a jazz lick to the aggressive fire of a rock riff, Hofner's Verythin Classic JS is at home in just about any musical milieu. Its German spruce top and flamed maple back and sides provide a regal backdrop for the Classic's elegant inlays and gold-plated appointments.

Celebrated for its flexibility and broad tonal palette, H¶fner's versions of the semi-hollowbody can portray the subdued warmth of a full hollowbody, the bright and primary hues of a solidbody, or just about any shade of tone in-between.

The solid tonewood block inside the body is carefully crafted to fit exactly the curved top and back of the guitar. This construction provides a sensitive response and excellent sustain.

Every Verythin employs a hand-fitted solid spruce sustain block that does not use tone bars. These features reduce the potential for feedback, accentuate the tonal punch and attack and preserve the guitar's acoustic qualities.

A good semi-hollow

Comments about Hofner HVCJS Verythin JS Electric Guitar:

This is a very useful instrument. I obtained one on a whim because I was getting tired of the bulk and feedback issues associated with full hollowbodied guitars. I have a whack of solidbodies, mostly USA jacksons, and I thought it might be nice to pick up a semi-hollow that could emulate the sound of an archtop. The wood on this instrument is beautiful. It is light and easy to carry. The neck offers generous access to the fretboard, and the maple construction means that the neck can take heavy gauge strings easily. (i'm a 13s guy). The tone is great, although with a neck pickup you won't get a lot of variation. This guitar does a great job of emulating a full hollow body, and it is very feedback resistant. (I have used it in small spaces with a drummer, bassist and 100 watt tube amp through a 4 x 12.. trust me, it is a good performer). However, the quality is somewhat iffy. The fretwork is inconsistent, especially compared to my USA jacksons. And the special bridge on this model is horrendous to use. I would rather have a tuneamatic. This is a good straight-ahead jazz guitar for those who don't want bulk or feedback.

Hofner JS - a great big jazz box sound out of a very thin, smallish guitar

By Greg DiGiorgio

from east coast USA

Comments about Hofner HVCJS Verythin JS Electric Guitar:

It doesn't look like a big jazz box and it doesn't feel like one, but it sure does sound like one! I didn't realize until after I bought mine (from a player I "knew" in a web forum) how expensive these guitars are new. But they're right up there with the Es-175 which is as expensive.

I have to give this guitar the highest rating here. It's just so darn convenient and easy to play without the weight and the bulk of other large jazz boxes.
I picked up a Hofner JS used, but like new a year or two ago. It is my favorite guitar just to pick up and play and that's with a Gibson ES-175 and a vintage IBZ Herb Ellis model waiting in the wings. Doesn't mean the JS is a better guitar than the 175, but it's as good and one heckuva lot lighter and easier to hold. I have no complaints about mine and leave it out of the humidified case on a stand ready to pick up and play most of the time.
No complaints here. The quality is everything I would expect from an upper crust guitar though the finish seems more polyurethane than nitro.
There are lots of guitars out there in this range. For what I paid - a 10! For regular retail? Less.

a great es 335 alternative

Comments about Hofner HVCJS Verythin JS Electric Guitar:

This is an extremely versatile guitar. While the John Stowell variation of the Hofner Verythin is generally seen as a 'jazz guitar', it handles a broad range of music--and it handles it extremely well. It has a full 25.5" scale (yes, it's a bit longer than the usual Hofner 25 1/4" scale). It has has a somewhat 'chunky' neck with a width at the nut of 1 3/4". But thist suits me just fine. I can run lighter guage strings on this guitar, and still get some 'snap' out of them. Most welcome, too, is the 'single coil' option. On these guitars (at least the early ones') you can roll the tone control all the way back, and the mini-humbucker goes into single-coil mode. (I had mine modified so that I could pull up the tone control knob up to achieve this.) You can go from an open single-coil sound to a fat (well relatively fat) humbucker tone--all in the same guitar. It is extremely comfortable to hold (though a bit neck heavy when standing). These guitars are becoming hard to find. However, if I ever lost mine (or had it stolen) I would go to great lengths to get another. Although this guitar has a fitted block running down the middle like a 335 (definitely a 'semi-hollow') it has a very different tone than it's Gibson counter part. Highly recommended (if you can find one).
