I bought this guitar online for my 2 year old son. (Tried to get a 1/4 size in another model but those are hard to come by.) This guitar is definitely not a toy. It stays in tune moderately well--once it has settled in for at least 3 days. The sound is good for such a low price. I can only hear very, very slight buzz when fretting. It has nylon strings which is good for beginner hands. You can count on this guitar as being the best in the price range, since all the other ones are literally toys.

Guitar is beautiful. Has nice details and looks like a miniature of a well built full size. Unfortunately, one of the screws that held on one of the turning keys broke during the very first tuning of the strings. Had to return the guitar. Musician's Friend staff were wonderful about the exchange, immediately providing a free shipping label for the return via email. I hope the replacement product performs better, and if not, I know I will be able to return for a refund. Great customer service!

We are returning this item. Unlike the photos, it comes in a "my first guitar" box and could not be tuned. It was disappointingly low quality.

Comments about Hohner HAG-250P 1/2-Size Parlor Acoustic Guitar:

I thrifted this guitar for 15USD, and I bring it to my Spanish classes along with a ukulele because it's so portable, but It requires constant tuning, and the fret work is a little inconsistent, that when I play a D chord, for example, just pressing the G string down to the fretboard bends it out of tune. Other than that, I love this guitar for what it is, something to have fun on. If you are looking for a higher quality instrument as either a travel guitar or a suzuki instrument, check out Ibanez's half size. I got it for my father-in-law to use as a travel instrument and it sounds nice, stays in tune better AND has a truss rod.

Comments about Hohner HAG-250P 1/2-Size Parlor Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this because I thought I would get an extremely portable guitar that I could practice on (in the Army, deployed overseas). It is NOT a real guitar. It is a toy of superior construction and looks. Action so high, you could drive a truck under the strings. Intonation terrible. Tuners very cheap. I wouldn't even buy this for a kid -- he would lose interest when he realized it's impossible to make a good sound with this thing -- or even an "in tune" sound. Unless you are opening a new TGI Friday's restaurant and are looking for "kitsch" to hang on the walls, don't waste your money. Buy a 3/4 size guitar and shy away from anything smaller.

For the money, a pretty decent little guitar!

              from Long Beach, CA

Comments about Hohner HAG-250P 1/2-Size Parlor Acoustic Guitar:

I wanted to give this thing five stars -- because I've overall been delighted by this little guy -- I've been having a blast.

But five stars might lead some folks to believe that it was without flaw -- and while it's a very decent little guitar and I think a very good deal for the money, there are compromises, to be sure. Let's say 4 stars plus a happy face.

Of course, some of those compromises relate directly to size -- and one simply can't expect fine fit and feel in something made at this low price point. The action is a little high (but there's room to lower the bridge saddle -- still, fret clearance might be an issue, a go-slow approach would be appropriate).

But, as others have pointed out, it's not a toy.

Some of the upper fret ranges might be a bit hinky intonation-wise -- but I haven't changed the strings yet and, as others note, that's probably an important consideration. Since it's strung with a standard light classical set, I'm thinking still lighter gauges -- at least on the treble strings -- might not be appropriate. The second string has some intonation issues toward the octave, but I suspect it's related to string gauge -- and I wasn't expecting great intonation in a tiny guitar at this price point.

I have it strung up a major third above standard -- but since my other guitars are all a half step down, it's essentially 'a fourth' up. The first string is the worst, feeling just a little over-tight. If I can't get the right gauge, maybe I'll go down to the local fishing supply store. =)

I love the size. Not only is it easier to haul around (although a little too big to get it all in a knapsack without the neck sticking out), it's easier on left wrist and right shoulder -- where a classical with a wide D neck can tweak smaller hands or a dreadnaught can agitate rotator cuffs, trying to hang a shoulder and arm over.

Anyway, four stars plus with a smiley face. Don't expect perfection -- but you can probably expect a fun little guitar.

I ordered this as a first guitar for my 8 year old granddaughter. It is the perfect size and the close-to-the-fingerboard nylon strings make it easy to play.

Because of a comment from another customer, I ordered a set of D'Addario Requinto strings along with it, but I haven't had to put them on yet. The strings that came on the guitar stay in tune fairly well after a period of stretching. I will put the new strings on if she continues to practice. She was thrilled with her "just my size" guitar. She also commented to her mom that "This is not a Dora the Explorer guitar. This is a 'real' guitar."

I got this for my 2 year old. He showed a lot of interest in my full size turner, it engulfed him but he held it right so now he has this little guitar. I still have to tune it every few minutes but it is new, hopefully that gets better. My son loves it. It sounds real nice too. If you want a starter guitar, this is worth the money.
