Almost perfect. So what's wrong? The AS73 comes with the action set too high, and clumsy, heavyweight strings. So the initial impression you get when you first play it is entirely wrong.

But put a reasonable set of strings on it, bring the action down to the point the precision neck is designed to allow, and now you have a guitar that is easily the equal, actually the superior if we're being totally honest, of instruments priced many times what the Artcore AS73 costs.

The problem, such as it is, can be remedied within minutes of taking the instrument out of the box, and at that point the AS73 is essentially perfect. The sad thing is that less experienced players won't know how to do this -- so they won't get the results the instrument is capable of. I knocked a point off for this.

The cherry finish is to die for, smooth, clear and strong; the sound is resonant and offers significant sustain; the output is high, able to drive classic tube amps and modern units alike into the danger zone; the tuners are stable and easy to use; the instrument itself is surprisingly light (there's that hollow body working for you) and the neck is both speedy and offers the wonderful consistency we've been seeing lately, ever since machines took over the difficult job of getting them straight.

I know there's a segment of the musical crowd that worships hand-made gear, but in the case of guitar necks, that exactly the wrong way to go. Play one of these and see what modern technology can do for you.

This is my third Ibanez; I presently own over seventy guitars and basses, not to mention those I've previously owned, and the Ibanez instruments are, hands-down, the best instruments in my collection. Keepers in every sense of the word, and built far above their apparent class. Highly, highly recommended.
Everything you actually need. I would be happy to purchase an upgraded instrument with locking tuners and fine-tuning at the bridge, however. Those without bending skills will miss a whammy bar. I don't -- that's the first thing I remove from a any guitar I own.
Perfect. It is difficult for me to imagine how an instrument of this quality can be sold at this price.
Extreme. Probably the best dollar-for-instrument ratio of any guitar I've ever owned.

I think its sad that you just cant find a good hollowbody guitar for under 2grand. I play this guitar for my high school jazz choir, and it is always joked at because it wont hold tune worth a darn. I am planning on buying some grover tuners and a regular gibson stopbar to see if I can keep it in tune. Other than that, the guitar sounds great for jazz, swing, fusion, latin, blues, rock, etc.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AS73 Electric Guitar:

I love this guitar! I wanted a Semi-Hollow Body for a while but couldn't afford a ES335. So, I bought an AS73 in white. The quality is great for the price and the tone is fantastic through my Blues Jr. I recently added a Bigsby B3 with a Towner Tension Bar. It is now a great guitar! Go try one out!

A really nice instrument for the money

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AS73 Electric Guitar:

After 2 years of playing my AS73 for mostly jazz and blues, I have really developed an appreciation for how nice of an instrument it is. I own several solid-body guitars, but this is my only semi-hollow body. Although I have toyed with the thought of replacing the pickups, they really do sound nice with the proper amp settings. The neck feels great and the construction is solid with a really nice finish (I have it in sunburst). I noticed one reviewer who indicated that he is teased for it not staying in tune. I can say that short of practicing bends nonstop, mine stays solidly in tune for days at a time. I suspect cheap/worn strings may be the actual culprit rather than the guitar. Overall, it is an amazingly good value for the money and one I will be hanging on to for a long time.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AS73 Electric Guitar:

This is an update on this great guitar. Since 2008 when I purchased this guitar I have changed pickups to '57 Classic in the bridge and '57 Classic+ in the neck. This change really brought this guitar alive. No other electronics were changed but the pickups make a huge difference. Best money I've spent in a long time. If you have the money go for a pickup change and breath new life into a great guitar.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AS73 Electric Guitar:

This is a very playable guitar with a solid feel and good electronics. Pots and switches make no noise even after a few years of continuous play.
The neck is pretty fast, the guitar looks good, and the frets have a nice feel. I've pondered a while, but can't think of anything about it I don't like.

It's my favorite rhythm guitar and with a price low enough to make it guilt-free. If you need a hollow body and would rather not take out a loan, the Artcore will make you a very happy guitar player.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AS73 Electric Guitar:

First off, Gibson semi-hollows are way too expensive these days. I can't come up with a King's ransom for a real 335. Plus, Gibson 335's come from the Memphis factory now, and let's just say that they're not the same as the old ones. The Epiphone Dot was OK, I've owned a couple, but was still not too happy. I decided to try the Ibanez Artcore AS-73 and was pleasantly surprised. I now own three of them and am saving to get the 12-string version, too. I've been a very serious guitarist since I was a kid and I'm 55 now. I was a luthier for many years, too. Let me say that in all my experiences, I haven't run across a better value than the AS-73. It will do nearly any kind of music, and has a pretty hot bridge pickup that cranks the distortion pretty heavily. The neck is flat and wide for ease of bending the strings. It is so easy to play. Some people will gripe about anything, but I don't understand some of the reviewers with complaints on here. I've seen a lot of these and they are very consistent. You could do much worse than this guitar.

This baby smokes. Plays like a dream and tone you won't believe. Ibanez has got this one right. Now don't buy it to play metal!!! Many who buy and play Ibanez are looking for that and I stayed away from this guitar because I had had a Ibanez electric a few years ago liked the feel but it screamed. Listened to a friend who said try this one you will be surpised. Well she is at home. Black gleems the pictures do not do it justice. Way better than Epiphone's Dot and at the same price.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AS73 Electric Guitar:

Ignore all the comments about substandard pickups - I would never change the stock pickups on this model. They have a unique, smoky growl that sounds awesome when plugged into my AC-30. I don't use ANY distortion pedals at all, just a little echo. The tone is just perfect.

Playability and a cool look are there as well.

But.. to get it where I was happy took some work and you should expect the same.

First, intonation out of the box was off. Second, action was WAY too high. Third, the nut was way too high, which has the effect of sharping the first few frets. Fourth, the frets are too high, about 30% higher than my strat (I had them sanded down), and lastly the tuning keys would slip, particularly in high humidity situations, so impossible to keep in tune for an entire hard-strumming song.

So, in the end you'll need to spend a bit more to address all this stuff.

I'm more than happy with the result, for this price range. But make no mistake, it's not going to be wonderful out of the box.

This is a great guitar for Beatles, blues, classic rock. I like being able to pick it up to play unamplified too.

It is very comfy to play and gets you a lot of that ES-335 vibe. I can see why the designers of the original went with this shape, its very comfy, much like a dreadnaught guitar, but a thinner body. It is a little wider than most electrics, but is lighter weight than a typical solid body.

I don't have any big issues with the tuning or it not staying in tune. I have one in a vintage burst finish, looks very classy. I may swap out the knobs and pickup tip at some point, but just for cosmetic reasons.
