OVERVIEW

An affordable jazz box with a spruce top, maple body and dual humbuckers.

Artcore players represent a wide range of musical genres, but the Ibanez Artcore Expressionist AFJ95 Hollowbody Electric Guitar is dedicated to the jazz guitarist. That's probably obvious if you know your old school jazz boxes: wooden bridges, narrow frets. It features a spruce top and flamed maple back & sides for pure Jazz tone. This model has dual Super 58 Custom pickups that deliver a wider range of tones for everything from bebop to smooth jazz and beyond. The 20-fret fretboard produces that authentically warm jazz tone and to top it off: the AFJ95 comes equipped with high-quality flatwound strings.

Case sold separately.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore Expressionist AFJ95 Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I was fortunate enough, with the help of MUSICIAN'S FRIEND, to get one of the remaining few production models of the Ibanez AFJ95 in the Antique Flat Fade finish. I haven't seen a single photo yet that does this finish justice. Absolutely beautiful. Why Ibanez decided to discontinue making these in Antique Flat Fade and make them available only in red is a complete mystery to me. It makes no sense.

I have three hollowbody guitars: A blonde Eastman Pagelli, a 1995 Ibanez GB10, the seven-string version of the Ibanez AFJ95, and now this. It was owning the AFJ957 that made me know what to expect out of this guitar before I got it. With an Eastman Pagelli and a GB10 on hand, it could be said that I didn't need this guitar, which may be true. But now that I've played it, I hold this guitar in the same high regard as the other three.

Considerably lighter than the 7-string version, I'd say that this was at first, to me, a surprisingly lightweight guitar. The tone on the AFJ95 is absolutely great, in part I feel because of having a flat finish instead of a gloss finish. The flat finish also makes for an extremely smooth and silky neck feel. Finish work, fretwork, paint, everything on the guitar could not be improved upon.......perfect. Flatwound 11-gauge strings and it was set up perfectly right out of the box.

I don't think anyone makes better affordable mid-priced guitars than Ibanez and this is a perfect example. I honestly don't know how you could do any better at this price. The body style and dimensions (and I would imagine the neck profile as well) on the AFJ95 are pretty much identical to the Japanese-made Ibanez Prestige AF200, which costs about four times as much.

This should be a permanent model in the Ibanez catalog and should always be available in a traditional brown or vintage sunburst finish.

Again, probably the best hollowbody you can buy for this price.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore Expressionist AFJ95 Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I am not able to provide a very comprehensive review, but I'll convey my early impressions. I've been playing 30 years, mostly acoustic fingerstyle/blues/rockabilly, and this is my first jazz guitar. For research, I read many reviews, forums and message boards, and tried out at least a dozen guitars. The AFJ95 seemed like the best combination of value, price and quality. The guitar looks clean and attractive; the flat finish imparts a vintage feel. It arrived with .009s, and I certainly plan to experiment with heavier gauges, different picks, amp settings, and eventually I'll probably raise the action. The guitar already sounds pretty terrific through my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III George Benson. The thin strings impart a somewhat metallic, twangy sound, which works for a rockabilly feel, but I was also able to coax some jazz sounds out of it as well. The guitar is a bit heavy, and as the tuners seem a little cheap I may replace them at some point (but they function well). I'm happy with my choice, and I think that this guitar can be a solid my partner for many years as I explore the jazz realm.
