OVERVIEW

Seductive natural flame maple top.

The Ibanez AS103 Artcore Guitar offers semi-hollow sustain, power, and feedback resistance. Flamed maple on the top back and sides provides beauty and clear tone. A 5-piece Artcore custom set-in neck increases sustain and strength. Two Ibanez Custom 58 pickups have a full, versatile output great for rhythm and lead. Artcore Custom inlays and gold hardware complete the elegant package.

Players, music store owners and the music industry press were stunned by the debut of the affordable Ibanez Artcore guitars in 2002. That still didn't prepare them for the unveiling of the Artcore Customs in 2005. These are truly exquisite guitars that offer patrician specs and tones at plebeian prices. The question "How do you do it?" is still being asked.

Best Quality Semi-Hollow for the money - and for a lot MORE money too!

By Chad Johnson

from Arcata, California

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I just have to give it a 10. I can't falut the guitar on anything. I'm usually very critical of anything I buy, but nothing here sticks out as even being slightly annoying. The guitar is still quite new to me, but when you grab a guitar, you just know when it's right. When you are going back and forth about getting something - it's usually because something bugs you and you are deciding if you can live with that. There is notheing to "live with" here. It's all desireable. If the price works for you, there is nothing to lose. I have never reviewed any of my MF purchaes before. I just felt I had to share my thoughts on this particular guitar.
This guitar has all the classic features of a great semi-hollow. It's just like a Gibson ES-345 - minus the "Varitone" switch. It's a cut above the typical "Dot" style, having nice inlay and binding everywhere. The tuners are very stable, yet easy to turn. The AS103 is a stunning looking guitar. It would be cool to have coil splittig added, but that's really not a biggie. It sounds great clean in all pickup configurations. It sounds great dirty with some crunch for rock rhythm. The notes just chime out! Leads are as cutting or as creamey as you want. Play this baby through a tube amp and you are in Heaven.
I was amazed at how nice this guitar is - right out of the box! There is no need for any set-up with this instrument. The one I got plays with no string buzz on any string or any fret. It feels great in your hand, and is easy to play. I heard about the great set-up on various forums I scouered searching for info - and many praised the "out-of-the-box" playability. The guitar is light, and feels good against your body. It's a bit smaller than an ES-335, which is fine with me because that guitar is too big IMO. The AS103 even sounds good unplugged. I have been noodling around as I watch TV because I can't put it down, and the clarity of the notes and the sustain are great. I love this guitar.
For the price of an equivalant guitar from Gibson you could buy 3 - 5 Ibanez AS103s, and you would not be losing out on any quality. I researched semi-hollows for a long time before my purchase, and many jazz guys prefer the AS103 to the ES-335 in quality, playability and sound. The Custom models from Ibanez are truly a cut above, and it's obvious they take extra care to make sure these guitars are ready for playing BEFORE they leave the factory. In 30 years of playing, I've never had a guitar play this well out of the box. I took a chance purchasing one without having the chance to play one first, and I am not dissappointed. If you like the price of this guitar, you will LOVE Ibanez AS103.

Ask me a question

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I'm only giving it an 8 for a overall rating because it would be a 10 if it came with Gibson '57 Classic pickups.
I have owned this guitar since Dec '10. I took it in today to have Gibson 57 Classic and Classic Plus pickups installed. When I pulled it from the case, there was silence in the store as several customers came to see it and remarked on how beautiful it was, one customer asked if he could touch it. One of the guys who runs the studio and is a super fan of ES335's, he had tried his hardest to get me to buy one and not from him (too much money), was amazed at how well it was made, how gorgeous it was, and how well it played unplugged. This guitar is absolutely wonderful, it plays and sounds like a dream. The only reason I'm putting Gibson pickups in it is because I know that when I get it back, there will be no reason for me to dream of having an ES335 again. Do yourself a favor, buy this guitar, like I said mine is natural, I can't speak for the vintage brown, but th natural is absolutely beautiful. The only thing I did to mine when I first got it was to lower the action a bit and set the intonation.
Not a flaw in the finish. Wood control knobs, wood pickguard. The bookcase quilted maple is perfect. Neck is flawless. Inlays are beautiful. Binding is flawless. Tuners are great. Stays in tune. Tone and volumes starts at 1. No crackling when you adjust tone or volume. One thing I don't care for is when you completely turn back one volume in the middle position it will cancel out both pickups, but that's an easy fix, while they are installing the new pickups.
I got mine on E-Bay new for a great price. I swear it must have fell off a truck. Well worth the price. Beautiful case, high quality. Say what you will, this guitar does not know it was made in China.

Best Kept Thinline Secret

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Well, I saw a picture of this on a used forum and fell in love with it. I was looking for a jazzbox and while this really isn't it, It has a style and grace all it's own. It was set up with light strings (9-42) and I liked the way it played and kept it that way. As far as play, the neck has a shape that just plain suits me. It's thin, but still wide enough to move around on. I have to say it is the fastest neck I have ever played. The construction is a work of art in itsef. I dare you to find a better fit and finish for 2-3 times the cost. It is a semi-hollow, which means in this case, the neck continues or joins a block that runs through the center to the heel. You can get a good amout of LP-style sustain because of this. i find it well suited for Blues and light Jazz, although you could do anything short of metal with it. If you're pining away for a ES335 - there is no doubt that this will satisfy your heart - BE CAREFUL! you may never move up from it.If there is anything negative about it, I would say that it's the typical Ibanez HSC. The Tolex just seems to peel off when you look at them.If you are looking at this axe, You won't regret owning it.

Great Guitar

By Tim Myer

from Maryland

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

The first thing that I noticed when I opened the box and started playing was how acoustically alive this guitar is. In 1980, I bought one of the early Japanese Ibanez semi-hollow bodies that later went on to be the Schofield Model. I still kick myself for letting it go. This guitar is every bit it's equal. Notes ring out like bells and the sustain lasts for days. The fretwork is impeccable and the finish is flawless. The set-up from the factory was excellent and in tune. If you are looking for a 335 type of guitar, run to buy an AS103.
This guitar really is a killer deal. The only reason that I give it a 9 instead of a ten is because I am not a fan of the gold hardware and the pickgaurd. Maybe it has too many features.
I can't say enough about the quality of this guitar for the price. I have played numerous other hollow-body guitars that do not even come close for 3x the price.
Killer Deal

Best Value in 335-style guitar

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

All the reviews about how can you get so much guitar for so little money are true. I bought one of these because I didn't want to shell out thousands for the Gibson version. However, this has a very Gibson-like sound to it as is. It's great off the shelf, and my favorite part is the neck. It's as close to my preferred shape as it gets (I'm not a fan of the slimline). It has the support and depth of a great acoustic neck, and the scale length is a solid 24.75, which should be listed in the specs. This opens up the upper frets just enough for better precision work, but easily accommodates bending 11's. The guitar comes strung with a 10-52 set, which sounds OK, but doesn't play so well. Switched them out for 11-50. The stock pickups are quite pleasing as is, but tinkerer alert: this guitar or the AS-93 (same neck) might be the best platform for upgrading to custom pickups and wiring out there for under $2000. You could get an AS-93, and put in some 57 Classics and then take a trip to London with your savings!

Versatility.

By Moses, RL

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have been playing this guitar for three years now, and every day I pick it up is a treat. The range of tone produced by this guitar is amazing. I bought this guitar to be an in between for my jazzbox and my solid body, now I find I play it more than any of my other guitars. The neck on this thing is so comfortable, the neck pickup produces and unbelievable fat tone while the bridge position gives you tones of twang. I play this through my 68 Garnett stack and every time I am floored by the sound of this guitar. It is a must have for any one.

Love at first sight...

By Ibanez/customer/for/life

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I walked in to my local guitar store to find a Les Paul to satisfy my Classic Rock needs. I found this guitar off to the side with no one really looking at it. Instantly I fell in love with the craftsmanship. The finish I got isn't available here but I'm sure the finishes available are also spectacular.I plugged it in to a fender blues jr. and my heart melted into my fingers as I played. I started playing and automatically fell deeply in love. I could get those NICE jazzy cleans and gritty hard rock tones. Undoubtedly the most versatile guitar I've ever played. Bought it on the spot and even looking at it now, it makes me want to cry. One of those rare guitar finds for me that is ACTUAL love. As long as you don't play metal, this guitar will satisfy your every need. I would buy this one again FOR SURE. Please give Ibanez your business. They deserve it.

A Top Notched Axe

By Andy/Guitarknapper

from Prosperity, S.C.

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have been playing guitar for over 40 years, and have been a school band director for 25 years. I was performing on a Gibson ES 335 in the early 70's, and gave it up for a Les Paul Custom. My main axe has been a Strat Elite since 1983. Wanting to get back to this style of guitar I could not afford a 335, so I origianlly bought an Ibanez Artcore AF 85 jazz box. It was an unbelievable value, but still longed for the thinline box. I ran across the Ibanez Artcore AS103 BM custom. Same as the AS103 except, for a limited burl finish. The first month I have played it with a nine piece R&B band outdoors, a small funk combo, a full Church orchestra/choir musical, and recorded with it. I am in guitar heaven with this axe. It not only looks and plays like a million bucks, but sounds even better. The articulate response and variation of tone does any style right. It stays in tune extremely well and the superb fret dressing is a plus over the lower Artcores. I did sell my AF85 for near what I paid for it. As Howee would say, "I got a great deal"!

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

After being back ordered for a month, the first guitar I received had a bad 12th fret. I couldn't believe it. But, Musician's Friend sent me a return label and completely took care of it. The second one was perfect...the only pain was that it was back ordered again! I bought this because of my Ibanez AF105 which had some feedback issues. It is also an outstanding guitar which I will use in quieter situations. The thing I like most is the ability to get close to that jazzy, archtop, tone.

Not Amazing

By jimi van clapdrix malmsteen

from Middle of Nowhere, New York

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I was at my local music store and looking for a new axe, and i saw this one. i picked up and suddenly realized how heavy it was for a hollowbody. It also is quite large. As for the playing goes, it has a relatively smooth neck but for some reason the fretboard is rather annoying due to its lack of finish. The stock pick-ups are not that bad. The thing I like about this guitar the most is that it stays in tune very easy. The fact that it comes with a case is cool, especially because it comes with a decent case. I would reccomend this guitar to someone who plays mostly blues and classic rock because it does not handle a lot of gain very well. If you switch styles alot and dont want to change your guitar I would reccomend just getting an american fat strat and spend a little more money.

Unique, Versatile Rocker with classic undertones

By Alexander

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

My search for the ultimate thinline hollow body rock box is over. I waited months to get this and now that I did I think I made the right choice. Right off the box this guitar's setup is very playable. The neck pickup is great for warm jazz and indie tones while the bridge pickup offers plenty of grit for leadwork or rhythm with lifted mids. The middle setting is balanced and musical, good for approximating acoustic clean sounds. I switch styles a lot and I'm able to get everything I need. Expecting to be able to chug away to a heavy metal song is unrealistic. But for everything else, this axe is a wonderful complement. It controls feedback well enough to be able to handle saturated gains in driving rock or pop punk choruses. It cleans up enough for those jazz cleans. The case that comes with it is plush and rugged. The finish is gorgeous. And the price is very right. Some musicians won't be able to settle for anything that's not a Gibson Dot or a Rick 330. I understand. But if you don't feel like dropping 3 grand on a semi hollow, don't overlook this product. It is professional grade in every respect but the price.

Satisfies the 335 GAS!!!

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

You won't find a better performing, production line semi-hollow anywhere else for the price!!! The AS103 is definitely Custom Shop Quality!!! 100% playable right out of the box - action is just right and neck is fast and thin like a 60's style on the Gibson 335's. The construction and cosmetic quality are absolutely flawless (no exaggeration. The frets are immaculately dressed and all the parts are screwed on straight and tight). plays acoustically loud unplugged and sustains well. I'm liking this semi-hollow more and more, every time I pick it up. The D'addario 10's were okay, but stringed her up with Ernie Ball 11's and that took her voice to another level. Just getting used to the pickups (not as hot as Gibson '57s) and I think there's a reason for that. Turn up the amp a little and the clear and woody tones are captured beautifully. The product photo does not do this guitar justice. In person, the guitar looks 100 times better! If you want to find a guitar that will out perform this one, you will have to pay the $3,000 price tag...but don't count on that as a guarantee.

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I just got my AS103 natural, I simply love it. Knowing that the AS103 was backordered and probably nonattainable until Jan. I looked elsewhere and found mine in the natural..Pictures cannot due the finish justice. Now how does it play? Smooth and sounds perfect I can play anything and it sounds wonderful. I believe mine is a bit different that this model, it came w/ a tunamatic bridge and S58B and Neck pickups. I love this guitar so much it's sort of depressed me, kinda' like getting married-you know you have the best you can get and everything you look at now is not worth the effort. If you have it backordered consider yourself lucky.

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I've owned one of these for 3 years. It can handle any style of music well. The low output pickups on this guitar are so pure sounding. You can easily shape it's tone to fit your taste by using your favorite effects or amps. I have found this is my favorite guitar to record with because of it's uncolored natural tone. As if all of that isn't enough, the guitar is absolutely stunning looking. Whenever I pull it out of the case in front of people their jaws drop. I can't say enough about this ave. Just buy one and you'll keep it forever.

Ok, this guitar is unbelievable. The quality of Ibanez Artcores are unsurpassed for the price. The guitar plays well enough, i had to adjust the action and replace the strings after the first week but that was totally my preference, because the factory setup is playable. the number feature of this guitar is the tone. let me tell you, get ready for the most impressive tone for this price that you will ever find. I have recently upgraded to an American strat, but this will always be one of my favorite guitars

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Absolutely wonderful guitar. After a little setup (lowered the action, raised the pickups and changed the pickup screws setting) it plays great. Ibanez did a great job with this guitar. The finish and quality are amazing. The tone from their custom pickups is really good with deep lows and great highs (after setup, originally the highs were kinda flat, a little adjustment on the height and the screw setting on the pickups solved that issue). All in all, my new favorite guitar. I have pretty much not picked up any of my other guitars since I purchased this guitar .. better than any other guitar in its price range and better than most guitars about 2X-3X as expensive .. very versatile .. you can play rock, jazz, blues, folk, metal .. pretty much anything .. Dont think about it, if you have the money .. buy it ..

AS 103 - A Super Guitar

By william holley

from Laurel, Maryland

Comments about Ibanez AS103 Artcore Custom Series Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Overall, I really like the sound of the pickups, feel of the neck, finish of the guitar and frets. The case is real nice too. The only thing some people may think is out of place are the black tone knobs. I liked them and got a compliment on them the first time I had this guitar out in public. However, I think if they were made of rosewood to match the name plate or a color to match the finish, it would be a super custom guitar.
Similar in style to an ES335 but with better inlays, pickguard. The case is real nice too.
The finish, inlays, binding, tuning pegs are excellent. The frets are finished perfectly. The string action is pretty good. The feel of the neck is rounder than the Gibson 335 dot I sold a few years ago. However, I like the feel of the Ibanez better. It reminds me of a Hofner neck except a little wider.

I took it out of the box, tuned it up and plugged it in to my epiphone valve jr. I set the amp to 11 o'clock, rolled the tone back a bit and played some Stormy Monday and blues licks. I was surprised how much the Super 58s sound like a Gibson 335. When I dug in with the pick, the guitar growled. Very nice. Like a good blues singer who can give you the raspy voice when they want to. I also played some Wes Montgomery style and was also surprised by how good it sounded. The action was silky smooth.
You really cannot beat the value of this guitar. I relied on the reviewers of this guitar to buy it. They all got it right. Also, there were a few pretty good youtube videos which demonstrated how good it sounds.
