MPG--Multi-Purpose Guitar

By Keepitsimple

from Wilmington, North Carolina

This guitar--the EWC-30--is in many ways unique, and may represent a real evolution in guitar design and delivery of musical tone. Gone may be the days when to create a good acoustic sound, you had to start with the finest of tone woods and professional luthiers. Ibanez has mass-created a tone box here out of relatively inexpensive--yet attractive materials--veneered mahogany-- engineered it so it is tonefully accurate, easy to hold and play, and put it together like a tank. The EWC 30 produces a very decent sound--a bit tinkly because of its diminutive size and hardwood components--but sweetly pleasant and accurate all the way up the neck. Then if you want to project the sound beyond your own ears and your immediate surroundings, plug it in and adjust the EQ to advance the tone you want.So what you have here is an MPG--multi-purpose guitar-- small, rugged, handsome, easy to chord and lead and sounds good to both you in quiet settings and others in group settings. All without having to max out your credit card! If you want big and rich acoustic tone--look elsewhere. If you want pure and exciting electric tone, look elsewhere. But if you're like me--mostly a hobbyist--and only want one instrument to take care of and haul around to different settings, the EWC 30 is a good choice. (It's larger sibling, the Montage, goes further with electronics and has a bigger, but similar acoustic voice.)By the way, the other wood textures offered in this series may not make a whit of difference sound-wise. I suspect it's all about the look. Also, as with all mass-produced instruments--have a luthier level the frets and adjust the neck, if necessary. One complaint: I'm getting an unwanted vibration from inside when hitting certain notes, and I think it's coming from the battery compartment. I've had this problem on other acoustic/electrics. When you install metallic/plastic boxes and circuit boards and batteries and wires into and onto hollow wood boxes, expect something to vibrate besides the wood.Happy strumming.

Rope a dope

By Brent-lhG2X

Don't be fooled by the "exotic" beauty of these guitars because they bring you in with it...but what you get instead is garbage. I should first clarify, if you just want it to look nice and strum around the house with it then this is your guitar but if you want to actually play it plugged in, or gig with it it...save yourself the time and trouble. I have had this thing just over a year and from day 2 it gave me trouble. The electronics are junk. Yeah, yeah the onboard tuner is nice and the volume knob works most of the time but whether you plug 1/4" into it or XLR...nothin' but wiring related issues and a frustrated sound man. I have used this guitar in the studio and just miked it...it worked out well but if you are buying and not planning on using for electrics...then just get one without that feature. I'm just going to hang mine on the wall and let it look pretty for those guys that come over to my house and think it's worth a $1,000..."don't touch that guys" (because you'll break it!) I hate to dog on Ibanez, I have 3 but...this guitar was a huge let down to me...take it for what it is....a pretty decoration.

Nice quality guitar

By mont

from WIchita Falls, TX

I was looking for a cutaway acoustic guitar that I could play for gigs. (I wanted to leave my Taylor 410 at home and just use for recording with mic). I picked this guitar because it is very solid, has good tone and playability, and because I own an ibanez 12 string guitar and I really like the onboard tuner and electronics. This guitar plays well but I would not pick this guitar if you do not know your way around the fret board b/c the markers are not on the fret board but on top of the frets. They are dotted black which makes them difficult to see. Overall, good guitar for the money.

Small Body, Great Sound!

By steveee

from LA

Ibanez products have gotten a bad wrap for their acoustics, but if you played an EW or AE model, you would never know why! This EWC "GC" exclusive is amazing! First of all, the design is BEAUTIFUL! This is one of the most beautiful, yet simple guitars I have ever seen. It's none of that fancy body outlined, multi-colored type of design that we've all seen being overdone by some companies, but it's also not a basic looking guitar either. The cutaway adds a strong uniqueness to the overall body which has a very soft, resonant finish. The extra touch inlay at the 12th fret is also a good look! And the sound is A LOT more powerful than you would expect from such a small body. Although it lacks a very powerful deep tone, it definitely delivers for its size. I've had this guitar for a few months now and found it hard to put it down! The tuners are also outstandingly accurate for a lengthy period of time. In most guitars, you'll always seem to have it being a half-step under when it goes out of tune. For some odd reason, this guitar actually finds itself going a half-step up out of tune instead. But it definitely stays in tune for long periods of time (even after using a capo!) so don't worry about it jumping off on you during sessions.Being an acoustic eletric, though, the electrics are not as strong I hoped it would be. The b-band controls are not particularly effective in controlling the given functions (bass, mid, treble), but the built-in tuner is spot on. This should not be an entire concern if you have the right amp with you.Overall, this is a definite pickup for someone who would rather have a guitar with a small body, a pretty thin neck, and a sweet cutaway. I've definitely fell in love with this guitar after trying a few Seagulls, Takamines, Epiphones and Yamahas around the same price range.
