The sleek Ibanez S was a revolt against the traditional mahogany guitars of its time that were usually heavy, bulky and uncomfortable. Originally the S guitar was designed as an all-around guitar. Now, however, it finds its largest number of adherents among the practitioners of the more extreme forms of metal who appreciate it for its unique combination of fat mahogany/maple tone and sustain with light weight and comfort.
The quilted maple and mahogany back body construction with matching headstock provides a classic blend of warmth and sparkle while the original sleek body arch offers playability and luxury. The S5470Q model features an HGD1 neck humbucker, ST2 middle single-coil pickup, and HGD2 bridge humbucker to supply you a complete spectrum of sounds from clean, to crunchy, to crushing. The 5-piece maple/walnut Super Wizard HP neck with Prestige finishing gives you increased speed and playing comfort. The ZR(Zero resistance) tremolo with ball bearings offers ultimate smooth and stable arming while the Zero point system 2 features ultimate tuning stability.

As previously mentioned, the thin/wide/flat neck and action on this guitar is out of this world. I initially opted for the RG3570, but saw the S5470 on display and the rest is history. The action was extremely low (1mm high E - 1.5 mm low E), but amazingly, there was NO apparent fret buzz. However, I raised the action a half mm, since I generate my speed via alternate-picking, which requires slightly higher action (1.5 high E) so the pick can make solid contact with the stings. Anything lower than 1.5 is more suited for legato and tapping. The finish is beautiful; much better than what is seen online. Don't let the paper-thin S shape fool you; it's almost as heavy as an RG! As of all great guitars, there are always cons. Both pickups sound great in full humbucker mode, but when mixed with the single coil in positions 2 + 4, the tone is very anemic compared to my RG's and EGEN8. Also, the B sting has unwanted harmonic issues (basically unwanted NOISE) in distortion mode when playing slow bluesy licks on the 10th and 12th frets. I had an ESP Stephen Carpenter model that had the same problem. Sorry, but I can't give an accurate assessment on the tremolo system, since I rarely use it in my style of playing Anyway; despite the cons, the EXTREME playability and quality of this guitar was what sold me.

This is my fifteenth electric guitar, and I must say the action and playability is unlike any of my others! If you are a guitar freak like myself, you MUST check one out!!!
The neck on these guitars are out of this world! The pickups will do anything commanded of them. And the stability of the bridge is unreal!
Built for the pros, but priced for us. You get more than you pay for though they may seem expensive.
A great investment!!! I have the Viking red and will be getting the blue one next.
