A stunning shredder with a gorgeous walnut top, HSH pickup configuration and a ZR-2 tremolo bridge.

The Ibanez S970w Electric Guitar is a striking shredder with a smart combination of tonewoods, shape and hardware. The comfortably contoured African mahogany body with claro walnut top is perfectly joined to a 5-piece maple and mahogany neck. The neck features the Wizard Premium design that has the same construction and thickness as the Wizard Prestige and is balanced for both comfort and speed. CAP pickups in an HSH configuration provide a vast variety of tones. The S970W also features the Ibanez Zero Resistance and Zero Point System 3 tremolo system that permits extreme dive-bombing while returning all the strings back in tune, even if one breaks en route. A locking nut and cosmo black hardware complete this guitar's collection of features.

Comments about Ibanez S970W Electric Guitar:

          Finishings
This is one of the most beautiful Ibanez I ever seen. It has a gorgeous Walnut top, with a white binding surrounding the body. In the back of the body is possible to see the 2 pieces of mahogany which definitely have a higher quality than the mid-priced Ibanez. The arm is beautiful, the fretboard is made of Rosewood but it seems a different kind of wood due to the pattern. I was amazed by 2 things of this arm, the awesome work of the frets, the best I've ever seen, better the than the old Prestige models. Also the maple binding in the arm, is really special. The headstock has a kind of protective plastic cover. I really like the pieces of maple wood of the arm, its parallel lines give more strength and increases durability. In general, this guitar is a luthier kind of guitar for more mature kind guitarists.

          Playability
The arm is really thin; you feel it from the first moment. I could manage to achieve a low action (1.3 mm 1st string with a string gauge 0.09-0.42) so it's really easy to shred, few buzzing. This model is even more thin and light than the other I had so it's very pleasant to play live or at home. To make it even softer to play I removed the springs of the ZP3, this I use only for studio so it stays more in tune. The ZR II bridge is very nice, stays in tune and easy to calibrate. Conclusion, one of the most comfortable guitars to play ever!

          Sound
The guitar comes with some CAP stock pickups which have a decent sound. I play Prog Power Metal and change them to Duncan Distortion on the bridge, Duncan Quarter Pound in the middle and Liquifire DiMarzio in the neck. Despite some opinions that the S models lack of lows, this one has a good and balanced low end, defined mids and a brilliant high end. With the combination of pickups I use, the bridge pickup gives clarity, definition, high gain and a balanced crunch. Not the heaviest crunchy sound like an RG with EMG's, but good enough. For cleans I use the 2, 3 and 4 position and gives a crystalline sound. The sound is thinner than an RG in the 3rd position, but still is an interesting clean, acoustic kind of sound. The neck pickup gives a sweet leads, with strong mids and a sparkly high end while keeping balanced lows. The sustain of the guitar is average, not the best but not the worst. To conclude, it sounds way much better than the middle priced Ibanez S, has a more defined sound and it's more voiced to middle tones with balanced lows and highs, ideal for shredding.

          Quality
I own this guitar for almost 10 months and it keeps in a good shape. The guitar has a solid construction, only complaint is that some sections of the arm needed more sandpaper work, but after months of playing its OK, you don't notice them anymore. The Premium Models have way better quality and finishing's than the Middle Priced models.

I give it a 4.5 since I had to change the stock pickups, Amazing shredder guitar!!!

Comments about Ibanez S970W Electric Guitar:

I've played a Steve Vai JEM and loved it but this guitar in my opinion blows the JEM away. The neck is outstanding, I have smaller hands than most people and I can play comfortably and stretch pretty well on this guitar. The pickups are a bit cheap for this guitar but that,s an easy replacement. The Mahogany body with the Walnut top is beautiful and creates a great sound. The tremolo stays in tune perfectly and is very smooth. The Ibanez 970w is perfect for all music styles ranging for Jazz to some hardcore Death Metal in my opinion. It has the fastest most comfortable neck I've ever played. I would gladly play live without a backup.

Comments about Ibanez S970W Electric Guitar:

Bought this guitar and it developed some fret buzz after a few days. I adjusted the neck but that didn't help. Took it to a luthier and found that the 12th fret had popped out a bit. Even after the fix it still buzzed and sounded muted when bending on higher frets. Sent it in for warranty repair and they still couldn't fix it. I eventually returned it. Even though I am an Ibanez girl, don't think I will buy another.

Comments about Ibanez S970W Electric Guitar:

This is a very good guitar. The S970 is attractive and has a Prestige-like profile.

The S970 Premium that I purchased is likewise a much better guitar than the RG920 I own. The S970 "betters" its RG Premium counterpart with respect to both finish and hardware. The S970's neck also feels more like the 18mm/20mm S5470 Prestige neck than the equivalent RG Premium/Prestige models insofar as the S970 neck has a Prestige-like "flatness." In my experience, the RG Premium Wizard neck-- which plays very nicely as well-- is a bit rounder than the Prestige Wizard. Of course, it's possible that the S/RG Premium neck contrast that I note above may just be unique to the examples I own.

The one reservation I have about the S970 (ditto for the RG920) is the quality of the tone woods used. The S Premium is lighter in weight than its S Prestige cousin. In fact, I believe the S970 Premium is about 1 pound lighter than the S5470 Prestige. I presume that this means that the "select woods" used in the Premium line are less dense than those featured in the Prestige line. Likewise, finish on all Premium guitars is necessarily hit or miss. Some of the veneers have a lot of figuring, while others have virtually none.

You will also want to replace the pickups. The stock pickups are OK but they are definitely budget pickups and are best suited for bedroom guitarists.

When one considers the S970's excellent Prestige-like playability, however, the above are basically trivial concerns. The bottom-line is that if you're on a budget or just don't want to risk your top-of-the-line Prestige on the road, the S970 will serve you very well.
