I just got this guitar delivered a couple days ago. First the good. It was set up excellently straight from the factory. I literally had to do nothing to this guitar but tune it up and plug it in. The finish is beautiful and thick. The neck thru body feels wonderful as you access the upper frets. Although this is advertised as a lightweight guitar, it feels about the same as your average strat. Not nearly as heavy as a LP, but average. The body is nice and thin, and feels great to play standing up. The bad. This guitar gets shipped in a cardboard box. Normally for a guitar in this price range I would expect a case, I suppose I should learn to read more carefully. The 2 bad parts on the guitar are;1) The volume pot is very loose and required tightening the nut inside the body of the guitar.2) There is a large drop of fretboard finish on the fretboard around the 3rd fret. This does not affect playability at all, but is unsightly and should have been caught by QAQC at the factory.Overall I am highly satisfied with this shredtastic axe and recommend it to anyone wanting a mid range guitar that plays like it's 2-3 thousand Dollar counterparts.

I bought this model with the active pickups. The sound was too dirty and I play nothing but metal. Once I switched to the passives it was 100% better.

This is metal machine. Smooth, fast neck. The bridge is fully adjustable. It stays in tune like a champ and it has never given me any trouble. Also, It sounds great, what more could you ask for?

    AWESOME Guitar!

    By Killer Guitar Productions

I have nothing bad to say about this guitar. The Satin Black finish looks mean, it sounds badass and is built exceptionally well. I love the headstock...I wish Jackson offered more models with it -- but I guess it helps to make the SLSMG unique. You can't go worng with this guitar if it's within your budget!

    Great feel and tone!

    By sLuDgEfAcToRy

This guitar is by far one of the coolest guitars I've ever played. It's non-American but you can't tell by the quality and balance. The pickups speak for themselves but the playability is truly flawless. This guitar is well worth it's price tag. I strictly play metal and this guitar compliments the style completely. Awesome access to the higher frets! The ebony fretboard is lightning quick. Can't complain. If you NEED a Floyd Rose buy a SL1, but if you can live without one, this guitar stands up to all the American models and you won't have to finance it.

    I'll use it Forever.....

I started playing electric guitar about a year and a 1/2 ago. I got my first electric guitar, a beginner Crate guitar with a Crate amp. I starter kit basically. I noticed that when I played it it had bad intonation, bad sound, and a standard or possibly slower neck. So, I started looking for a better guitar. I was interested in ESP, but they don't sell them at the place I went to. So, I checked out a Jackson. It was like heaven. very note, chord, and riff was sick. Felt..amazing...unexplainable. But, after trying different types of Jackson's, I still haven't found the right one. Then, i saw it. The satin black with EMG 81's and 85's. I started playing on a Vox Valvetronix. I knew that was the guitar for me. So, I put it on layaway for a bit cheaper, ('cause I'm in Canada) and I've been paying it off since August. great Guitar. ***Only thing is a Floyd Rose and this would OWN!!!***

Over the last few days I have come to own one of these. The tone is warm, smooth, but if pushed it can be punchy, lightfull. It has a very smooth playing neck it is a compound radius style. I'm not a fan of the EMG-HZ pickups but in this guitar, they make it sound like a champ.

SLSMG! Get the best *&^$ the rest!

    By Matt-kg6i1

    from St Louis

I bought this guitar a couple months ago and i love it! The neck is super fast, the active EMGs scream, but also sound pretty good clean (i either switch to the 85 or to both). The 85 is great for solos and sweeping while the 81 is great for riffing. I usually don't like headstocks that don't have all the keys on one side but this one looks really good. It stays in tune like a champ with any tuning i try. The guitar is also super light and thin, really easy on your shoulder. The only thing i was a little sad about is an overall volume knob instead of two separate, but no big deal. This is the guitar for you!

I have had the non active, gloss black finish version of this guitar for one year already. I must say that this guitar fulfills every desire for a true aspiring player! First off, the body is well contoured and is extremely comfortable. The finish is well done but still must be taken care of! The neck-thru construction and 14"-16" compound radius neck delivers awesome speed, playability, comfort, remarkable lightweightedness and SUSTAIN. The crme binding is genuine, the inlays are elegant and simple and the ebony fret board is just as beautiful as it matches the pure blackness of the instrument! I have had actives installed on it and the sound is perfect now, especially with my XMM pedal and Fender deluxe 900 amp.I gave a 9 for features because the ONLY real thing missing is an original floyd rose...A 9 for quality because the hardware rusts after a few months, so you must find some replacements for every screw...Other than that, any owner of this guitar made a wise choice purchasing it; it is indeed an ideal guitar

    EXCELLENT GUITAR

    By Soloist

I bought this guitar back in 2004 after spending months looking for the perfect guitar. This model came with passive EMGs HZ PUPs but on the plus side it is also on of the rare models with binding around the entire body, neck and headstock. It also features a transparent black (with a hint of gray) flamed top. The guitar is really thin, super lightweight, and has a VERY VERY FAST neck. I eventually upgraded the PUPs: EMG 89 for the neck and 81 for the bridge. After hundreds if not thousands of hours of play the guitar has held up very well. My only gripe is the hardware. The electronics are cheap and noisy. It would be great if there was a US model available.

So, I tried this guitar at Long and McQuade about 3 months ago....boy! I was looking for a guitar that suited "me". I tried many guitars in my price range, and they all of them didn't seem to fit me and my metal style. Then this bad boy that I saw really caught my eye. It had a smooth body, with amazing EMG's, one of the only Jacksons to carry them. When I started playing, my hands flew across the fretboard like nothing I've ever played before. Hands down, cheapest and best metal guitar around!!!

    Kick A** Guitar

    By JacksonMan-YzS2K

    from Cali

So I've been playing for 5 years and a pretty solid 2 years and I'm pushing the limits with my shredding and death metal. Before this guitar I had a Les Paul Studio. This guitar kicks the Les Paul's a** without even trying and supposedly Les Pauls are "the best". The neck is rediculously perfect sized for shredding or for any playing IMO, the neck is made of beautiful ebony that you almost never find on guitar so low prices, the newere model SLSMG's come with the Active EMG pickups that scream and sound great for metal. The body rests nicely for playing and is incredibly light (but not too light! just right) Nice Tuno-o-matic bridge and very nice neck through design. Those are basically all the main essentials needed for a guitar that plays well. Not only that but it looks sexy and metal as all hell. Because I plan on keeping this guitar forever because it's that nice I've already ordered new tuning machines which I thought were a little cheap. Later I will probably install some nicer volume pots. If you're looking for a metal guitar just buy this one, just do it, I went searching comparing metal guitars for like 2 weeks non-stop and this is it for a guitar in the thousand dollar range. I can shred and I know what I'm talking about so unless you wanna wammy, trust me and get this guitar, but honestly, would you rather wammy your notes or be able to tune your guitar? That's basically the trade off. BUY THIS! I already named mine Zoey <3

This thing is way better than your guitar.

    By MoreMetalThanYourMa'sKettle

    from Boston, MA

I love this thing! I sought out to buy a nice guitar without a bolt-on and I ended up with the slsmg. I have had a couple bolt-on Kellys with floyds and I wanted something that wasn't such a maintenance whore. I don't need a Floyd to do what I do - I am primarily a rif writer, not a cheeseball solo bulls*****r, but when I play seering leads it is always up to the task. This thing has all the crunch, is extremely comfortable always, and is fast as hell. The sustain is amazing! This is the first guitar I actually take care of and always keep set up. This thing is great for metal, but I can wail the blues with this thing also.

    shred machine

Bought this guitar last year and love it. Play metal on it, play clean on it, it will sound good. The weight of this guitar is a big advantage especially if you gig or play a ton. One of the frets from the factory was a little high, had to pay 25 bucks to fix that but other than that it has had no troubles. If you are looking for a quality instrument that is crafted like some of the higher end hand made american models, look no further. I was impressed when I saw the quality of this instrument.

    Alright, too heavy

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

If you like Heavy guitars this one is for you. The thru neck design with mohogany body, and neck makes this thing heavy. The neck is sort of skinny, but not like an ibanez. The EMG-HZ pickups, in my opinion, aeren't a very good combo in this guitar. I think its a let down, but go for it if you want to spend the money, nd be disapointed when an ibanez will do you a lot better.

    My Baby

    By Wilson

First I have to comment that I saw another review saying that if you like heavy guitars to buy this one because it is heavy. I would like to state that the SL in SLSMG stands for super-light. This baby weighs nothing. I got this guitar about 4 years ago when it came equipped with EMG-HZ's. I wish I would have been able to have the 81 and 85 but take what you can get right? I did get it for about half of what it is selling for here anyway. This baby has the fastest fretboard of any guitar I have ever touched. Since I upgraded to a pair of hot rodded seymour duncan's (yes I know odd choice for such a metal oriented guitar) the guitar just sings. Tuning machines are perfect in my opinion. They came a little loose, but you can tighten the tension on them to your liking. The satin finish is beautiful and stays pristine through years of hard play. The ebony fretboard is incredibly smooth, although I recently noticed 3 small (1/4" cracks in it up near the 18th fret. They have not hurt the sound or playability at all but still mad me sad. Make sure to get a fitted case for this as it is so thin.

    Metal Machine

    By sweeper107

    from Jackson, TN

This guitar is perfect for me. The EMG active PUs scream with authority, but can be modulated via guitar volume knob to purr like kittens. The gloss black finish is beautiful and mirror-like. The Ivoroid binding is very well done and contrasts the jet black ebony fretboard nicely. I love the string through body set-up b/c it is much easier to palm mute than a Floyd Rose and setting up the intonation is a snap. The neck-thru construction also allows supreme access to the upper frets and sustain goes on for hours. The neck is thin, but not overly done and is very very fast. Overall, this guitar rocks. It is very close to American quality for nearly half the price. Honestly, I haven't touched any of my fenders since I got this SLSMG. If you love Metal, buy it.
