We've had a set of 28 of these guitars for a school year now. They seem to be wearing well. They stay in tune pretty good. It took 1-2 weeks for the strings to stretch, since then they've been great. Even though the string are cheap we haven't broken any this year. The guitars sound good and the students love them. FYI the finger board and necks are wide, more in the classical guitar range. The action on the full size guitars is really high (how far you need to push the string down).

I would only recommend these guitars for the most stringent budget based purchases, and hope that somehow you land a nice guitar through the mail. Of the most recent 5 Lyons guitars we bought 2 of the 5 would be considered 'generally workable'.
I own & manage a large group of teaching studios. We have multiple Lyons guitars in use in the studios, You cannot place expectations and demands on a guitar in this price, because it would be unreasonable. On the positive side, the build quality in the last 5-10 years for guitars originating from China/Indonesia/Thailand etc has improved.
Lyons guitars have a very very broad range of quality control. Some guitars stay in tune and play not too badly. Other Lyons guitars like the most recent batch that arrived have very poor workmanship, with very poor intonation. The guitar face has knots in the wood, and airbrush finishing has been completely missed on certain areas of the guitar. Dried glue residue is common place around the guitar neck joint, body and headstock.
Again, it's tantamount to realize this is an inexpensive starter guitar. No problems, and no points deducted. But when a starter guitar fails to start in the first place, you really are handicapping your chances of success in playing guitar with an instrument that has substandard workmanship.

Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

Good full sound. Tuning mechanism not quite solid. Very well constructed otherwise. Came with nylon strings as I wished for.
While I'm not a guitarist, this is a very nicely made instrument and seems sturdy enough to survive in a classroom situation. My only concern is that one (especially) of the tuning gears seems to have more play in it that others. I think it will work OK for tuning though.
This is a small instrument as it is supposed to be. In spite of that, the sound (with nylon strings as it came) it produces is full and has good qualiy. I believe that it will turn out to be just what I was looking for.
This appears to be a real musical instrument rather than the 'toys' I've seen in shops at prices just a bit lower that this instrument. I would rate it as a very good value.

Good Guitar

Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

I'm 15, and I take my guitar around school, but decided I needed something cheaper to do so with in case my '50s Silvertone archtop was damaged there. I saw this, had enough and decided to buy it. Boy, what a surprise. The sound is surprisingly full and round, and smoother than I had expected. The neck is wide but comfortable, but the fret work and fretboard itself is undeniably cheap-they painted over some of the frets on mine whilst painting the fretboard. It's not a huge deal to me, but it is an eyesore. And the body feels and looks nice at first, but a closer look reveals underlying finish cracks and finish spots. Also, the bridge on mine is lifting up. It hasn't become a huge deal yet, but once again, it worries me. All in all, there's an equal amount of pros and cons, but for me and the purpose I intended it for, I don't think I could have picked anything better. Flaws are obvious, but the sound and feel make up for that.

Better than expected value

By Nicklas

Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

I am an old beginner. My large fingers need the wider neck of a classical guitar. I bought the Lyons Classroom Guitar to be a beater that I could carry without worrying about damage or theft. It obviously was quickly constructed with little regard for finish but from a distance it looks ok. I replaced the strings with quality light tension nylon strings. I filed the string groves in the nut for proper clearance at fret 1 and sanded the saddle bottom for proper clearance at fret 12. At about $60 for guitar and strings, it plays and sounds very nearly as good as my $700 Yamaha. I consider it a great value.

Don't waste your money

By cRandy

from Iowa

Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

My disastifaction is that when one plays the 1st & 2nd fret on the high E string it gives the tone of the 3rd fret, G. I can make the guitar work with a capo on the 3rd fret or higher. I've never been unhappy with anything else from Musician's Friend so I was careless in keeping track of the enclosed paperwork so I'm unable to return it. Seems this must be a lemon since I haven't seen other poor ratings but this is my experience & impression of the product.

Sounds fine, but not durable

Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

this guitar is cheap so I didn't expect much. Just something to play around with for fun since I have lots of guitars but no nylon string ones. This guy sounds fine, actually better than you would expect, however the finish and quality are horrible. Mine came with a huge paint spot/smudge from when they painted the black line around the edge of the body and smeared it when doing the front varnish. The back and neck look fine, but you can tell one day I will take it out and the neck will crumble as the finish is already showing stress cracks after just a few days of use. The tuners are also not great as it has a hard time staying in tune for extended periods. All in all sounds fine, fun for the price, but don't expect anything worth showing to your friends as this is not that kind of guitar.

Laughing at my brother..

By Rikrodz

from Alabama

Pros

  • Price Value Sound

Cons

  • Cosmetic Finish
  • High action

Best Uses

  • Beginner

Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

Bought this guitar about six months ago and immediately found that I was pleased with it; however upon closer inspection there were noticeable imperfections in the finish and the action was way too high. As with other nylon string guitars, these strings did not hold their tune and had to be retuned constantly for the next couple of weeks. Eventually they held their intonation and thoughts of replacing them soon vanished. I also worked on lowering the action on the neck and after some trial and errors I have it where it's just about perfect. The sweet sound coming out of this very inexpensive guitar is something to behold. My brother has a very expensive Spanish made nylon string guitar and the sound is actually comparable to his. I laugh at him every time I mention the price I paid for mine. Despite all the work and retuning it is now actually a pretty decent guitar; probably my second favorite to pick up and play.

Great for my classroom

Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

I teach beginning guitar to children ages 8-12, and love that they can use a guitar that's the right size for them, sounds pretty good, and doesn't break the bank. I've purchased other guitars in the same price range from other sources, but this was the only one that was of any quality at all. (Not cardboard with a paper finish!) It's not expensive, but worth every penny.

  • G String Is Dull
  • Mismatched parts
  • Requires Tuning Often
  • Shipped W Scuffsscratch

Best Uses

Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

I wasn't expecting a work of art considering the cost, and for the most part I'm satisfied. For the price, the fact that you get a "new" guitar that plays with relative quality is great. That being said, I do have a few qualms.

The action is very, very high, making it darn near impossible for some chords; this will require adjusting.

The width of the neck only adds to this issue. The Dunlop Trigger Flat Guitar Capo I also purchased has issues pressing the end string and requires me to pull it in a bit to get a firm hold. This alters the sound of the string only slightly.

The caps that cover what I assume are screws holding the bridge in place are not the same color, though are at least both an off-white color.

There are noticeable scuffs/ scratches on both back, top corners. I received the guitar in this condition.

The guitar requires tuning before each play and sometimes during.

All-in-all, I'm satisfied with my purchase. I feel the sound is satisfactory for learning and the issue of action can be corrected by me. If the cost of the guitar wasn't so low, I would definitely return it for another of the same type, but honestly, it isn't worth the trouble.

I purchased this guitar because I wanted to dedicate serious time to the art and was low on funds. I do plan on upgrading in a few months, at which point this guitar will be my knock around.

    Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

I bought this guitar for practice. I found out that it has great sound.
Of course the craftsmanship is a little off but it's a cheap guitar. For the price the guitar is very good. Nylon strings tend to stretch so it will take a while to tune.
I recommend this for beginners, or people that need a practice guitar.

    Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

I'm a teacher and have bought 7 Lyons guitars within the last year. I've read the complaints in other reviews and fortunately have not had those problems. It's a decent starter cheapie. Also, people can experiment with a smaller size without great expense(I instructed three small-handed adult students to buy a 3/4 size--they were very pleased).

        Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

If you're even toying with the notion of buying a low cost classical guitar you needn't give it any more thought, The action is a bit high - it's a classical guitar, it's supposed to be. Won't stay in tune - Stretch the strings out, it maintains tune as one would expect.
I use this instrument every day, am not at all disappointed. Changed strings to Pro Arte normal tension and the tone quality is as I would expect of any 'normal' price range guitar.

        Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

I'm an elementary music teacher and we decided to start a sixth grade guitar program so I order 28 Lyons guitars. The finish on all guitars was excellent. No damage to any because of shipping. The tuners are a little cheap as are the strings but they work. But at this price what do you expect. Being nylon strings it takes about a week of tuning once a day for the strings to start to stay in tune. We've been playing them for 3 weeks now and they stay in tune really well. They don't have the full sound of a Martin or Taylor guitar but for the price they sound good.

This is the best buy in a student classical guitar, they are inexpensive and are worth the money for parents to get their children into a private lesson with the least expense. Most come with a simple carry slip cover. Only designed for transport not protection.
Great for setting up classroom guitar classes on a very limited budget. I recommend to use the strings supplied and change them after every 30 to 60 hours of use if tone is an issue other wise I keep purchasing them because the action of the strings are always low enough for younger students they come in 1/2 size 3/4 and 4/4 this meets the requirements for any age student. I have been teaching classical guitar for 40 years.

                Comments about Lyons Classroom Guitar:

I operate a private music school, and was a bit skeptical at first on these guitars because of the price. So I bought one, and was very pleasantly suprised. I have bought many more since. The sound is very good, and the intonation is good until you get farther up on the neck than most beginners will ever dream of for 2 years or more. It takes a day or two of tuning at first to take up the slack in the instrument and the nylon strings, but after a week they are pretty stable. The kids like the fact that it looks classy, and the price makes it afforable to anyone with even a passing interest in learning to play. It's not a $300 guitar, and probably was never intended to be. But for a starter, and a durable classroom instrument, it can't be beat as an unbelievable value for the price. Heartily recommended.
