I bought this model on sale a few months ago. It had action that was simply too high for playing in the upper registers but a simple sanding job on the saddle cured this rather quickly. It has a good bass response and while the neck is quite wide, the neck is nice and thin. If you don't mind a little tweaking, this is a really good guitar for the price. The specs on the website list a spruce top and mahogany sides while the box lsited a cedar top and walnut back/sides. This was of little concern to me as the guitar has a really good sound and that is what matter, right?

Really wanted to like this guitar. The price point is terrific, and its a really good looker, with better than expected tone from the solid top spruce. But...

The first one i received had a warped top to the point the bridge was coming off. MF returned it cheerfully and sent me a new one...

The second one i received had the top in proper order, but the action was so high you could drive a truck through it. Sanded down the saddle as far as it could go and the action was still waaaay too high. There is no truss rod on this rig to adjust, so that's as good as it gets. Not good enough.

I think if you get lucky and get one that is close enough to setup out of the box, it could be a real winner, especially at the price it sells for. But that seems to be a luck of the draw at best.

Returned the second one, and am now shopping for something else.

Excellent nylon-string, great value.

Comments about Manuel Rodriguez Caballero 10 Classical Guitar:

I bought this last winter as a Christmas gift for my father and the man could not be happier with it. Although it is his, I find myself "borrowing" it all the time and have formed a very good opinion of it. For the price, this guitar is a steal and is one of the best nylon string classical guitars you can get for the "price to tone" ratio. I say very confidently that in a blind listening test it will beat many guitars more than 5x its price. I have been a guitarist for over 13 years and have gone through many classical, hybrid and flamenco-style nylon string guitars. This guitar resides in that sweet spot where it sounds good for folk, classical or even flamenco (although the action is a tad high for that, the spruce top helps). It is very loud and has great projection, while retaining note clarity and responding well to dynamics. People complaining of the high action must not have much experience with nylon string guitars. As far as nylon string guitars go, the action on mine was set up perfectly and actually lower than any of the nylon strings I have owned or played in the past (with the exception of the flamenco-style models, which are required to have a low, almost buzzy action). The solid spruce top gives it a very bright sound that complements the walnut back and sides. The top and laminate sides and back all had a very attractive grain in my model. It also has a natural bone nut which has become a rarity at this price point. If you're looking for a student classical, are new to nylon strings or are a seasoned guitarist looking for a cost-effective guitar with a great sound, this guitar is unbeatable.

Good at 149

Comments about Manuel Rodriguez Caballero 10 Classical Guitar:

Wanted to buy my 22yr old son a guitar that he could take camping that would sound good but wouldn't cry if it got ruined. At 149 this was good. We drew a line on the saddle where it met the bridge, took the saddle off and sanded 1/16" or so off it evenly and it plays pretty good now. If its on sale, buy it!

    Rough edges, exquisite sound

    Pros

    • Amazingly Beautiful Sound

    • Solid Spruce Top

    Cons

    • High action
    • Very Thick Poly Finish

    Best Uses

Comments about Manuel Rodriguez Caballero 10 Classical Guitar:

The Cabellero Ten sounds absolutely wonderful. It has a big, resonant voice, it's surprisingly loud, it has nice clear note separation without booming or muddiness, and it just generally sounds beautiful, and very typically Spanish.

I don't know if the top was made from the finest AAA hand-selected spruce or what, but I can tell you that whatever wood they used is working. For a budget guitar this is amazing - it has the sound of a much, much more expensive instrument. Don't let the overseas manufacture dissuade you.

On the other hand, it has very high, difficult action (even for a classical guitar), uninspired looks, and a thick, glossy finish that will turn off classical purists. The action can be lowered, and the rest of my criticisms are just cosmetic. This is a great guitar and an incredible bargain.

Comments about Manuel Rodriguez Caballero 10 Classical Guitar:

I bought this for my 21 year old son who has lots of electrics but no classical nylon strings. This is the sort of guitar to take camping after you find a case for it. The strings are way too high! Next chance we get we are going loosen the strings and pull off and start sanding down the bridge saddle piece to lower the strings to get it to play decent.

Comments about Manuel Rodriguez Caballero 10 Classical Guitar:

The best Chinese made guitar I've ever played, nicely crafted. I must say though, that I got one with factory blemishes at initial order and Musicians Friend made the exchange prompt and effortless. This Caballero 10 has tone quality that is very close to my 1989 Manuel Rodriguez Model B made in Almansa, Spain (list 3,400.). You will not be disappointed with this guitar, esp. if you can get it on sale.
