Comments about Martin 17 Series 000-17SM Auditorium Acoustic Guitar:

A joy to play. Combines vintage features (slotted headstock, small 000 body, mahogany back and sides, bone saddle and nut) with new features (back, sides and neck are satin finish mahogany, Sitka spruce top is finished gloss). Set up is easy to play. This guitar has a rich, warm tone (thanks to the mahogany) and a surprisingly lively, clear resonance thanks to the Sitka top. The 1-3/4-inch wide nut makes for easy fingerpicking, but this guitar can do it all: equally good for strumming and/or singer/songwriter style. One of the best sounding, mist versatile Martins in this price range. Well worth checking out.

I wanted a smaller bodied guitar that was good for all uses - strumming, flat-picking and finger style. This guitar is great for everything. Recommended!

Comments about Martin 17 Series 000-17SM Auditorium Acoustic Guitar:

The Martin 000-17SM is a great guitar, all the way around. It is an absolutely fantastic fingerstyle instrument, but if you take a pick to it, it responds very well. It is very loud for a "small" bodied guitar. This may be due to the elongated 000, 12-fret body. The 000, 12 fret design also gives this guitar a very balanced sound throughout its entire range. It's not "boomy" like a dreadnaught and it isn't "boxy" like a parlor or travel guitar.

The only "down" side for someone coming from a dreadnaught might be the wider neck. Once you start doing some fingerpicking on this thing, though, you'll fall in love with the neck.

The slotted headstock does take a little practice and a little more time when restringing, but I just think of that as "bonding" time. After all, this is the kind of guitar you're going to want to keep forever and pass down to your kids.

Comments about Martin 17 Series 000-17SM Auditorium Acoustic Guitar:

I really love the smaller 000 Martins. Just easier to transport and take anywhere. So comfortable to play for hours. I didn't expect 17SM to have such a glossy finish but I was pleasantly surprised by the mirror finish. I also own a 00015M which has no gloss. So these make a great pair.

The slotted headstock adds a cool vibe. Tone is rich and full- as expected on a Martin. Overall the guitar is beautiful with the look of a vintage instrument.

            Highly recommend.

Beautiful sound and a smaller body makes it feel like an old friend. Too bad this review will probably never be seen since they are discontinuing this model and it doesn't matter that the majority of us who played it, loved it.
