This is my second 12 string guitar, and it's the one that I'm still going to be playing 40 years from now! Sounds just as good, and even better than most guitars twice it's price. When i put it in my hands and played it, I knew we were going to be very happy together! My advice is just BUY IT!!!!!

Comments about Martin Custom X Series X1-D12E Dreadnought 12-String Acoustic-Electric:

I've been ogling over this guitar at my local guitar store and been picking it up and playing it for quite some time.

I wanted my own SO badly, so I started saving for months until I had enough to pick this sweet sounding and playing Martin D12X1AE and bring it home.

I did a bunch of research on it and the only real complaint people have had is that the top is a little too on the "unfinished" side, as in it'll pick up skin and oil and other whatnot. I also heard people saying that the back/sides were cheap looking, but I wasn't going to let that stop me.

I loved the sound and I had to have it.

The day came that I had enough money to buy it and I went, with cash in hand, to pick it up.

Being that I was about to spend A LOT of money on a guitar, more than I've ever spent on a musical instrument in my life, I decided to really give the guitar a SOLID eyeballing before springing the money. I'm glad I did.

The top, as I said before, is more "unfinished" looking than satiny, which didn't bother me much. I loved the sound and I'd get over the look of the top.
Then I looked at the back and sides. That's where the Martin D12X1AE lost me. I was under the impression from the salesman that they were "laminated" wood, but they're actually "laminate". Like laminate counter tops laminate.

It's a picture of mahogany on a piece of plastic-y material. The texture is weird, the feel is off, it just didn't feel like it was right.

I also realize that the bonded neck might help the function of the guitar and supposedly protect the neck from bending/twisting/etc, but it looks so awful and is ridiculously heavy.

All in all, I decided that after a year of ogling and fantasizing about taking this guitar home with me, that the fit/finish/construction of this guitar were enough of a detractor to deter me from purchasing it.

I did, however, buy a 12 string guitar for a little less than a third of what this guitar costs that I'm perfectly happy with.

This doesn't just go for this particular guitar, but for all Martin guitars in this price range. They're very low quality and have poor fit and finish. For the amount they want for an entry-level Martin just go buy yourself a less expensive guitar that is solid wood, or even plywood for that matter.

Time will tell how their laminate guitars will hold up. If you're looking to buy a Martin, save up about 3 times what you'd spend on this one and buy a full-fledged made in the U.S.A. out of real wood Martin and not one of their entry-level guitars.

I grew up in Texas. I always remember a lot of my buddy's pappas had 12 stringers laying on their arm-chairs when I'd go over to hang out. The one thing I remember about all of them, is that 9/10 times they were Martin, and that sweet sound.. Oh that sweet sound they made. With this D12X1AE I am reliving all that warmth and tone as an adult myself.. it just sounds gorgeous and I'd gladly be caught playing it any day of the week!

I just purchased this Martin 12 at a Guitar Center. They had two in stock – and the one I took home had the more even tone from string to string. This guitar has a beautiful feel and sound – and is simply fun to play. The Martin neck feels sooo good. The electrics are tucked inside the tone hole and are clean-sounding – no snap, crackle, or pop. I've used this on gigs – if you are using this with a PA, you'll be dialing out frequencies a touch rather than trying to find and emphasize sounds that aren't really in the instrument. I am very happy with my purchase.

Picked this up at my local music store and played a bit. Regretfully hung it back on the wall knowing that my children would be graduating before I could even begin dreaming of owning a "Martin". Imagine my surprise when I saw the price tag. I then learned that Martin opened a factory in Mexico and used a laminate construction on this series allowing for the lower price. My response was "So what?" This beauty sings! Great Martin quality, feel, and oh that Martin tone. But don't take my word for it, wait until your buddy picks one up and play his. Then you can kick yourself for letting him beat you to the punch. Remember...You've been warned. Do it!!!

Comments about Martin Custom X Series X1-D12E Dreadnought 12-String Acoustic-Electric:

I've been looking for a good acoustic 12-string for several months. I had started out by looking at cheaper models, such as Ibanez, and Rogue, also tried a Fender, I was disappointed with all of them. The strings were too close to each other, and the action on the necks were horrible, about impossible to stay in tune and impossible to play in regular tuning. A new music store opened in my area, and I saw this Martin there and had to try it. I'm totally impressed with it, its super easy to play, and the action is great even in regular and open tunings. It's a lot of fun to play and has a full bodied sound like it should. The neck is what is usually seen on a 12-string but it's not itimidating if this is your first time playing one. I'm having so much fun with this guitar playing old Leadbelly and Blind Willie Mctell records. This guitar also sounds great through an acoustic amp.

I have played 12 strings over many years and studied John Fahey and Bukka White. You can get it on with this Martin without paying a boutique price. The stratabond neck, for me, is a great pleasure. It jangles. It has depth. Great for slide! If you're a family man on a budget, get this and make your wife and kids happy with some good home music!
