OVERVIEW

As close as you can get to a Golden Era D-28 without a second mortgage.

Crafted to evoke the same powerful tone and sonorous projection as a pre-WWII D-28, the Martin D-28 Marquis Acoustic Guitar differs only by using the much less scarce, and therefore more affordable, Indian rosewood instead of Brazilian rosewood. Using only premium-grade solid Indian rosewood for the back and sides and a solid Adirondack spruce top, the Marquis Guitar delivers powerful sounds with scalloped Adirondack spruce braces and forward-shifted X-bracing. A special aging toner gives the wood a vintage countenance.

The list of historically accurate details, nearly overwhelming and totally exhaustive, captures the authentic spirit of the Martin D-28: mahogany blocks/dovetail neck joint construction, slot-through saddle, herringbone binding, neck dart, zipper back marquetry, ivoroid binding, herringbone top trim, Waverly butterbean tuners, and old-style wood fiber rosette.

The Martin D-28 Marquis also has a beveled and polished tortoise pickguard; ebony bridge with long saddle; modified V-shaped neck; ebony fretboard (1-3/4" nut, 25-2/5" scale) with diamond and square inlays; and fossil ivory nut, saddle, and bridgepins (with black dots).

The Martin D-28 Marquis Acoustic Guitar is a lovingly crafted Indian rosewood version of the discontinued D-28GE.

Martin D28 Marquis

By Stargazer55

from Langhorne, PA

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I've owned my Marquis since July of '08. This is my dream guitar come true. When I bought this guitar home to family & friends, they thought I was out of my mind when they heard what it cost. Then, when I played it, their jaws nearly hit the floor and they all understood & agreed that it was worth the price. I own 11 other guitars and this gets about 90% of the playing time. In my opinion, its the combination of the Adirondack top & Martin craftsmanship that make the difference. When I took it to Nashville this Summer it was a hit with all who had a chance to play and hear it. The most common reaction was "Wow!"This guitar will remain in the family well past my days.

    My Last Next Guitar

    By Martin Picker

    from South Central PA

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

This IS the holy grail of guitars. I've been through them all and this is it. I even sold a D35 I had hanging next to it because I knew it would never get played again. I put medium guage Martin SP+ strings on it and it plays like a dream. The sunburst is beautiful, and it's otherwise plain appearance is insignificant once you play a lick. I practice with a couple of others who are amped and I cut right through with no mic or anything. I've even been to the factory and met several of the craftspeople that built it. No wonder Martin is the king of the hill.

    a pleasure to play

    By David Morrison

    from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

This is the first "nice guitar" that I've ever owned. I wanted to upgrade, I saw this on the wall and gave it a try. The sound was rich, deep bass with out being muddy. The highs are clean, powerful and just as resonate as the bass notes. i could hear all of the notes in an open chord clearly. It was a religious experience. The price scared me away and I looked around for 2 months, Taylors, Martins, Gibsons..nothing compared or made the impression that the D=28 marquis made. I had to pony up. I'm so glad I did. I've had it for a year and I'm still in love with it. It beckons me daily. It's craftsmanship is a pleasure to hold.I was well worth the money, especially when you calculate the joy that you will receive for the rest of your days.

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I love the guitar, beautiful, excellent craftsmanship, perfect wood combination, great sound. However, I returned the guitar because the neck is too wide up the neck. It has wider-than-I-like string spacing as you go up the neck making pick-style playing difficult for me. I wish Martin would put the performer neck on this guitar. On my 028EC, the modified V neck is very playable and feels good. On the Marquis, it is too big and feels clunky. If you like the wide string spacing at the 12th fret, then you cannot go wrong with this guitar. But if not, you will never be completely happy. I also am not crazy about the non-gloss neck finish. Thanks to Musician's Friend for the excellent service including the trouble free return policy. You guys really know how to run a business.

THE best guitar on the market !!!

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this model after going through lots of Martins over the years. To me, this guitar is the best model Martin makes if you want the sound of a prewar 28 with the comfort of a thinner neck. Lots of bass and wonderful tones. Can't wait to hear the thing really open up after a few years of playing! The adirondack top makes this guitar sound simply wonderful.Hey, just spend the extra money and get THIS one, and it will be the last guitar you ever own!

    Spectacular-will give you the fear

    By Wooley

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have purchased a gun to protect this thing.Only flaw is the pickguard. I have seen better quality pickguards on cheaper Martins. I have put serious consideration into finding a way to de-value this thing without affecting the sound in order to ensure that I never sell it.

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I waited 40 years to get this guitar. It was worth the wait. I bought a Martin 000-16GT tobide my time and a few years later I got my chance to buy a D-28 as I'd dreamed of for decades. After trying a few different modles, I found a D-28 Marquis and tried it. The sound caught me and hasn't let me go. The power of the adirondak top was awsome , and, 7 years later it is even more so as the wood has opened up. The simple appointments stand in contrast to the beautiful harringbone design just add to the feast.

I am an old 12 string player and I love the wider neck. My biggest supprise was how easy it is to play with those medium strings.

The guitar is a complete pleasure

      Martin D-28

      By Guitarman-uvoWD

      from Eagle River, AK

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Received my D-28 in Sunburst. A very beautiful guitar which was set up perfect. No quality issues to complain about. I also own a Martin D16GT and a Blueridge Carter Stanley. The D-28 has the best sound of the three. I am unhappy about the plainness of the guitar for the money. It is not any nicer than my 16GT other than the sculpted V on the backside of the headpiece. I am now wishing I would have spent a little more and bought the Martin Marquis Edition.

Very loud and sonorous. has beautiful understated appointments, and really is reasonably priced. Particularly good guitar if you like wide string spacing at both nut and saddle. Seems to not have a volume ceiling and sounds terrific played soft or finger style as well. The mod V neck took about a week to get use to, now I don't even notice it. If you're looking for a Spruce/Rosewood dread this guitar deserves a very serious look. The Adirondack top is icing on the cake- and, again, very loud. I've owned some very good dreads and this one is, by far, the best.

My wife asked me to buy a guitar that would end my guitar purchasing. I played over 80 different guitars, but when I picked up my Marquis D 28 I knew I hit the jackpot! It was a little more than I had planned on spending, but well worth it. I'm in the process of selling off most of my collection (except my Telecaster, of course!), I just don't need them any more. I take my Marquis with me everywhere and play it every day. Kudos to Martin, nice job!

        One Fine Guitar

        By Kent-1ScTL

from London England, soon San Diego, Ca

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar is simply the finest acoustic guitar I have ever had the pleasure of playing. There are a couple of "dead notes" on the fret board, but I don't think there is a guitar made that doesn't suffer from this. The tone is beautifull, and the action is amazing. I have played mostly electric guitar for the past 30 years, and am used to the play ability of an electric. I have played acoustics over the years, and have never found one that doesn't want to slow me down. My new Marquis just doesn't seem to try to slow my pick'in down. I have had my Marquis for three months now, and haven't picked up my electric once. This guitar is going to change my style. This review may be over the top for some, but it is my honest opinion of the Martin D 28 Marquis.

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

This is a beautiful guitar. Great balance, great tone, you can feel the bass notes vibrating back into your chest when you play it. This is what a D-28 should look like and sound like and unfortunately not all of them do. I will also note that they come with Gotoh tuners not Waverly?s as stated in the ad. If you can get one with Waverly Tuners jump on it.

        See all my reviews

Comments about Martin Marquis D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I've owned Gibsons, Taylors, and other Martins. this guitar has the best, most even tone of any of them. Up and down the fretboard, right our of the box, this combination of woods, strings, hardware, and sheer craft sings like no other. Chords and single notes are clear as can be, and sustain better than any acoustic I've ever seen. Sounds beautiful in person and records wonderfully through a mic. It is very expensive, but worth it for the inspiration it provides. You'll want to play, and you'll play better, with this instrument at your side. I gave it only a 4.5 for value because it really is such an expensive guitar. But you can really coax magical sounds from it, and that's just impossible to put a price on!

              This is a tremendous guitar.

Try this: Play every Martin up the line in price, starting with a D-28. Be sure to test the D-35 and all the D-28 models. Four of us spent several hours doing exactly that, and the D-28 Marquis was the WOW.

Unless you can afford a Martin built between 1935 and 1939, this could be the best guitar you can buy.

I have owned many nice guitars from Taylor, Collings, and Bourgeois. This is the best of all. The build is impeccable, completely on par with the boutique makers. The tone is out of this world. The bass is incredible and pronounced but not muddy. The trebles are clear and ring out like a bell. This is the best dreadnought you can get unless you go way up in price to the authentic line.

This guitar has been discontinued by Martin as of January 2017. Several stores have some limited stock left. Get one while you can. I am a folk, country, and roots music singer and guitar player. I owned one of these D28 Marquis a few years ago and it was my workhorse. It is one of the most powerful guitars I've every played. And, I've been at this 25 years. I have played the equivalent of rooms full of rosewood dreadnoughts from every maker. I can remember only a handful that can compete with the D28 Marquis. Unfortunately, I made a poor decision and sold mine to pay for a Martin D28 Authentic that I did not ultimately keep. So, this year I decided to get another D28 Marquis, while I could, and keep it for the long haul. I smile every time I play it. You will too.
