Awesome Guitar

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

The construction is flawless and the guitar is so playable it almost plays itself. It has a sound that is rich and full, and a range that allows playing from delicate softness to a barking roar.
The Martin HD35 has all the features of the std. D35, the 3 piece back and bound fingerboard. It also has the herringbone pattern around the edge of the box and slightly different scalloped braces on the top.
There are no flaws in this guitar - the craftsmanship is superb.
This guitar is expensive and worth it. It was built with very high production standards and a sound everyone else wants to copy.

Of course....it's a Martin

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I've got my HD35 as a 10th Anniversary gift in 1995. I had the luxury of playing 6 different HD35 guitar and picking out the one I wanted. They all were excellent. The sound just unbelievably projects from this guitar. It has a full, rich, deep, mellow tone unlike any other guitar I've played or heard. My buddy has a top end Taylor and it blows it away in every category of sound. I find myself almost having to play softer so I do not drown him out. Way more solid than any other guitar in the price range and worth every penny you spend. I would highly recommend this guitar. You will not be sorry.

A Great Guitar

By Styx-CMWuk

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I just bought a Martin HD-35 and it is one great guitar. I have played guitar for over 30 years. I own a Guild F50R and a Daion Carabou as well as a few electric guitars. I love all of them but this new martin HD-35 has just taken me over. The bass tones are not muddy at all and the treble tones ring out clearly. I strum one single chord in normal tuning and I hear tones and overtones as if I were playing with Joni Mitchell tuning. Every string can be heard in equal volume. I am amazed. This guitar draws me and is quickly becoming my main axe....

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

The finest guitar I've ever played (that I can afford) I've owned mine for about 2 years now. It's an absolute cannon. Just beautiful and even across the strings. I powered mine with a K&K Mini Trinity system and I use Martin Lifespan strings (light). I play this guitar EVERY day and it just keeps getting better. I played a D41 a little bit ago, but it didn't have the presence that this one does. I love the HDs. I also own a HD 16LSH (my road guitar). I'd put this guitar up against any guitar in the upper price range. For the money, there is none better....not even close.

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought my HD-35 back in April of 1985. It has never disappointed me. It sounds great it plays easy and it just makes me sound good. People are always amazed by the sound. I just smile and say, "It's a Martin." That is all you can really say. Before the HD-35 I owned a Laguna guitar, a hand crafted guitar in it's own right but the differences are like night and day. The HD-35 has a big booming voice, it just rings. I love it!

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Ordered my HD-35 from this website. Five days later she arrived. Straight out of the box this guitar was ready to rock, not a scratch or a ding anywhere. Nice case, too. The smell of the rosewood was much stronger than I had imagined. And that Martin sound was there with the first strum. I rated it a nine for value because the HD-35 is not a cheap date. But I took it into a guitar center in Phoenix and compared it to the Taylor, Gibson, Takamine & the other guitars in its price range, even the more expensive Eric Clapton signature Martin, and the HD-35 had them all beat for tone. The EC model had a nice neck for my fat fingers, but could not match the sound of the bigger Dreadnought. The 3-piece rosewood back stands out as unique in the Martin line and the deep bass sounds great, it doesn?t boom that much, it just sounds good. The low oval neck is more slender than any other acoustic I?ve played and, with the ebony fretboard and binding, it plays very smooth and has a great feel to it. The whole guitar speaks to you about quality and craftsmanship. I?m very happy with this purchase. I just wish I would have bought a Martin a long time ago. Now that I have one, I can?t put it down.

This is what I expected from a top line Martin guitar. This is not what I expected from Musician's Friend.
The case the guitar came in was not the case depicted on the website. I have bought Martin guitars beore and they always came with Martin registration materials. Called Musician's Friend and they said they would follow up on this and I have not heard from them or received any materials. This is not what I would expect from "Private Reserve" service.

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

The HD-35 is the most lightly built of the Martin dreadnoughts, and is ideal for the solo player who wants great tone and a powerful bass response. The tone is classic Martin, and the powerful bass allows one to emphasize rhythm. This dreadnought is surprisingly responsive to fingerstyle and light flat picking, yet gives a much stronger bass response than a smaller guitar.
If you are a heavy strummer using medium gauge strings, and/or play in a band with a bass player, you may be better off with a D-28, or other more heavily built guitar, with less bass response. If you are a soloist with less interest in rhythm and bass response, and place maximum value on note separation, a smaller instrument may be a better choice. If your hands are huge, the neck may be a bit narrow.
If you are like me: a soloist, who sings, plays both fingerstyle and flat picking, and wants great bass response, I can't think of a better guitar! I am totally happy with mine. My favorite strings for this one are light gauge 80/20 bronze.

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

The HD-35 comes with a lot of tonal complexity. If you enjoy the "choir of angels" sound, then you'll probably love this guitar. My only complaint, and this is a purely personal preference, is the neck. I prefer a wider nut width, and the low profile neck shape is probably my least favorite of those offered by Martin. However, this does not impeded my enjoyment of the guitar. I really enjoy the slightly unruly sonic character of the HD-35.

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

The box arrived that was originally sealed with big copper staples by Martin. I carefully opened the box, removed the case with guitar. I open the case not knowing what to expect as it was bought sight unseen. I open the case and was immediately hit with the smell of rosewood while my eyes gazed upon a gorgeous flawless work of art. I removed the guitar, tuned it up and was swept away with the huge, harmonically-rich tone. The action was absolutely perfect out of the case (low). It was so comfortable to play I thought the strings were light gauge 11's, but a micrometer confirmed they were medium 13's.

The only thing I will swap out is the bridge pins and end piece. They are plastic. I will replace them with bone or titanium. If you do the same, make sure that the taper is 5 degrees, size 2A.

This is not my first Martin. I've had a D-28 and D-35S. The last time I owned one was in 1985. The great quality is still the same. What a great guitar from a great company!

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

A very, very good guitar. I'm not going to throw out a bunch of superlatives about this guitar, there is no real need to, and if you have ever played one you know it's the real deal. If you are looking to buy a top-end solid wood construction acoustic, the Martin HD-35 should probably be on your short list. I'm not sure you could get anything much better for vocal accompaniment, and that was my main attraction to it. Tonally, it is well balanced, with excellent response from soft to heavy dynamics. Nicely compliments the brighter sound of my duet partner's Taylor. A little more pricey than some models but you might want to give one a try. I absolutely love mine.

I have had several Martin guitars in the past including the Martin D-35. The HD-35 is much more than a better looking D-35. The sound is clearly deeper and richer than the D-35 in my opinion. It is awesome and makes me sound far better than my current skill level. Don't hesitate if you are considering this guitar. It doesn't disappoint.

              Wanted one all my life

              from Augusta, GA

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have love Martin guitars since I first learned to play in college. I have owned Alveraz, Yahama, Gibson (J45), Guilds (D25 & D40), and with each purchase I would tell myself, "It sorta sounds like a Martin." Finally at age 56 I decided I wasn't getting any younger and if I was going to get a Martin, I better do it now. I was not disappointed. It was a long wait, but well worth it. About a year ago I bought an HD35 and play it every day for myself, in church, and in small coffee houses etc.The action was incredible from the day I bought it. I added a bone saddle which seemed to make the guitar even more solid. The sound is vintage Martin - mellow basses, clear mids and trebles. I have read that some folks don't like the bass response of the HD35 for they say it is too boomy, but that is what attracted me to the guitar. I installed a LR Baggs trasducer and it sounds great. Our house has 5 guitars, but everyone wants to play the Martin. One of my sons has a Taylor, which he "likes", but he says one day he's going to do what I did - and step up to a Martin!

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Pay attention to having this professionally setup, and it will be your best friend for life. Smooth, rich, mellow tone, spectacular in drop-D tunings. When I plug-in, I play with a Fishman Rare Earth pickup mounted in the sound hole, through a Fender Acoustisonic Jr., sometimes through a LR Baggs Para Acoustic direct box into a variety of PA systems at local "Open-Mic" nights. I am an amateur at best, but this guitar inspires me to play and practice more. Unplugged I can't imagine a better sound. Plugged in, it will match any acoustic out there for whatever tone you are looking for. Very easy on the fingers, and the ears.

              Martin Quality ~ Excellent Value

Comments about Martin Standard Series HD-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have owned a D-15, DR, HD-28. I currently own a D-41 as well as this HD-35. But I keep reaching for the HD-35. Great right out of the box. Great action from the factory. Of all the Martins I have owned, I am keeping the HD-35 and the D-41 (Forever!). The HD-35 is a workhorse, full power, no excuses, just super solid. This guitar is a warrior. Don't let the remarks about a booming low end fool you, this guitar sounds great all over the board. Sounds as good as the D-41, the HD-35 is a great value in the Martin line. The HD-35 has to be THE most overlooked jewel in the Martin lineup.
