This tribute to the "Man in Black" sounds as good as it looks.
The Martin D-35 Johnny Cash Commemorative guitar's polished-black gloss lacquer finish allows its appointments to shine. Five bands of alternating black and white purfling encircle the top, three bands encircle the back and five bands border the sides, in all cases protected by grained ivoroid binding. The grained ivoroid heel cap and endpiece are likewise framed by multiple black and white inlays. The Style 45 rosette features an inlay of vibrant select green abalone pearl. Traditional Style 35 zigzag backstrips separate the three-piece back.
Both the fingerboard and headstock are bound with grained ivoroid and inset with mitered black/white fine line inlays. Martin's Old Style large decal logo gleams on the polished black ebony headplate. True to Cash's D-35 Custom, the headstock also sports Grover Rotomatic enclosed chrome tuners. The African black ebony fingerboard is inlaid with position markers similar to those on the D-42 Johnny Cash Signature Edition and small abalone stars bordered with mother of pearl at the 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th and 15th frets. Johnny Cash's signature in pearl appears between the 19th and 20th frets.
Because it's a Martin, the D-35 Johnny Cash Commemorative sounds as good as it looks. Combining an Engelmann spruce top with 1/4" forward shifted scalloped braces gives this Dreadnought sweet tone and incredible responsiveness. Back and sides of East Indian rosewood add warmth and projection. The 1-11/16" neck is carved from genuine mahogany. A bone nut and compensated bone saddle (fitted in an ebony belly bridge), enhance its resounding power and clarity. Abalone-topped black Style 42 bridge pins and endpin add an elegant touch of color. A polished and beveled black”of course”pickguard protects the top.
This black guitar deserves a black case, specifically a Geib style case with special black hardware and a black interior. The D-35 Johnny Cash Commemorative guitar comes with a special interior label in tribute to the "Man in Black," each personally signed by Cash's son, John Carter Cash and Martin Chairman C. F. Martin IV, and numbered in sequence.

- Awesome tone
- Engelmann Spruce Top
- Forward Shifted Bracing
- Playing at home
This is by far one of the best sounding Martins I have ever played, and I believe the forward-shifted bracing, the tall thin interior bracing inside on the back of the guitar and it's Engelmann Spruce top give it it's sweet tone. You will not find a stock Martin D35 that sounds this good! Yes, it's black and that will show every scratch…but tone is
what it's all about, and this guitar has it in 'Spades'! I love the stars on the fretboard…not 'showy' but understated and elegant.
- Was this a gift?:
I own a Gibson J-200 and a Martin D-41 but they do not come close to my D-35JC. Its projection is awesome!I find the best strings for it to be MSP4200 phosphor bronze medium. Martin really did the Man In Black great justice with this super sounding instrument. All true Johnny Cash guitar playing fans should endeavor to one day own one.
I have 2 other martins ,a Morgan and a Seagull. This guitar has a great bass and clear trebles, the loud vintage sounding guitar I was looking for. Finger-style or picked hard it performs. Black looks cool, although a fickle finish. Neck shape is wide so a player with a big hand will fit better. A real deal if you find the guitar sound you always looked for.
I picked up the johnny cash martin two weeks ago and I'm so glad I did best sounding guitar I have played I had to talk the dealer out of this one he did not wish to sell it. I'm glad it did.i'm playing the guitar more because I'm not able to put this one down. My other guitar are wall hangers now.
I bought "Johnny", #393, in August 07. This guitar keeps improving with time. I'll never part with it. Martin SP Light gauge strings favor my style. I also own 2005 HD-35. But "Johnny" is in a league all by itself. For anyone wanting top guitar value for the dollar, this is IT!
Ok - I bought this and played it along with my d-28 marquis madagascar. Guess what? This guitar was better balanced, sounded better and was every bit the d-28 and then some. The d-28 is being posted for sale as we speak and the johnny cash is in the permanent collection to compliment my gibson sj-200 true vintage. I don't mess around when it comes to guitars and neither did Martin as they hit a home run with this guitar.
If You want a step above the rest,Then you want this One. Stands out in any jam session, sound and Looks, simply put, absoulutly Beautiful. Sound is Martins deep and full. A real head turner. Thanks Harry'
If You want a guitar thats in a class of it's own and has a lot of bass and sweet sounding, Then you want a JC d35 It is smart looking and quite breath taking. No Glitter, like the D 45 Just quality Sound And a BLACK BEAUTY' Thanks Harry'
The "Johnny" is stupid--like in insane, out of its mind. This is as nearly a perfect guitar to play and the sound is unreal--no need to amp this baby. The medium strings are a bit tight so I replaced them with Martin SP lights--unbelieveable sound. And the all black is a total knock out.
