I bought this guitar after a bit of a journey in finding the right guitar. I had too many guitars that weren't getting enough play time but the one guitar that I really enjoyed the fit, feel, sound was a Little Martin (LX175) -- NOT a top end Martin by any stretch (HDL, stratabond neck, etc) So I went on a search for a larger version of the Little Martin. After liquidating a few of the unused herd, I was in the market for a guitar for around grand.

I visited by local music marts and tried out Martin's of all shapes and sizes and finally found that the 000x1ae as the size that fits my fingerpicking style. The dreadnaughts were too big (I hold the guitar in a classical pose) and this one really performed. Spruce top and HDL sides sound great. And even though i could probably have swung a much more expensive guitar, it picked this one as was happy that I did.

The top is NOT mirror finished and feels more like wood than finish. The sides are HDL and is pretty indestructible. The neck is confortable and very playable.

Also, if you wonder why there are two 000x1ae's on the site, this one is cheaper than the other 000x1ae on this site. The reason for this is that it is last year's model. The sticker inside the sound hole reads just like the title. That's the only difference.

Hope this helps.

I rated this sweet sounding guitar low because of its lack of a real finish. The thin, "hand rubbed" finish does nothing to protect the instrument from moisture damage. I know: my apartment buiding caught on fire and there was a lot of water in my unit. My finished Yamaha guitar survived the water, this unfinished Martin did not. The top pulled off and curled up like a potato chip. Unrepairable and heartbreaking. I implore Martin to finish all of their guitars with laquer. Even the inexpensive ones made in Mexico. All Martin guitars should be finished for protection of the instrument, and they should not charge us an extra arm and a leg to do so.

Comments about Martin Custom X Series X1-000E Auditorium Acoustic-Electric:

I love this particular Martin. I've owned it for a few years now and have enjoyed it immensely.

Martin's use of materials is pretty amazing. Only time will tell how this type construction will hold up but so far I've had no problems. Fit and finish are flawless.

It sounds great either unplugged or with an amp. The controls are inside the sound hole and easy to adjust. Tone is very good and consistent.

The only thing that bugs me is the location of the battery. It is inside the guitar and can only be changed when the strings are removed or loosened. I'm guessing that someone who performs a lot also changes their strings frequently and thus the battery as well. But if you leave it plugged in the battery will deplete sooner and could surprise you if performing.

The top finish on mine is slightly porous and may stain a bit from sweat. That adds character of course but something that neat freaks may find bothersome.

Otherwise it's a great Martin guitar for this price range. If mine was stolen I'd get another one.

I bought this little beauty to replace an old Yamaha 335 that served me well over the years. I have this guitar aboard a boat. It handles the environment well and has remained stable and clean tonally. No warping or deflection of the neck noted after a couple of years aboard my boat. I have been really happy with the ability to stow it overhead when I fly, it fits very well in the overhead on most planes.

Comments about Martin Custom X Series X1-000E Auditorium Acoustic-Electric:

Pro player here, a musician for over 50 years. I, like most musicians in the know, don't keep any vintage instruments in my home. They are all locked down in climate controlled storage. But I wanted a 000 sized acoustic as something to keep in the house, and travel with. Something with a smaller body than my Dreds. This Martin is the best I have played in this price range, in fact, it plays and sounds better in my opinion than lots of guitars costing 4 times as much. Now this is a smaller 000 body, so you wont get that boomy Dred sound out of it. But it does totally have that "Martin" sound" with nice bright projecting mid range and a very balanced overall tone. I don't usually play Martin strings and tear the strings off every guitar as soon as I get it, but these sound and feel pretty good. I'll leave them on until they need changing, and then go back to my Ernie Ball strings. Factory set up was good with 12's right out of the box, but I took 1/32 off the saddle and now it is perfect for me. Neck profile is very comfortable.

I must say, this guitar is really a fun guitar to play and I don't know when I have enjoyed just sitting around playing for hours on end. It blows me away every time I pick it up, and has caused me to be late for appointments.

Build quality far surpasses the price point. Martin quality all the way. The fingerboard is a dream to play and very easy to move around on.

Some people look at this guitar and think the solid top is unfinished, but there is a satin type of finish on it. I use regular Johnsons wood paste wax on it and that gives me all the protection I need.

I can't comment on the on board electronics as I am not big on any acoustic plugged into an amp and don't plan on using it. I like to have a good mic in front of me and let the strings move the air.

I will say that sometimes getting a case for a "000" can be tough, there are a few good ones out there but they will cost you. If you travel, some airlines will let you put this in the overheads. I'd be wise and look for the best protection in a compact package.

All in all this is a fine instrument that will give years of enjoyment.

Martins use of modern materials is a step in the right direction. I was really shocked at the feel and sound. And for the price, it really is a no brainer. MF gave me the fine service I have come to expect from them.

    Hey...it's a Martin. What's to think about

Comments about Martin Custom X Series X1-000E Auditorium Acoustic-Electric:

Many cheaper guitars have the battery at the input jack. Martin may have cut corners with the current under-the-string battery location but the last thing you want to do is remove a perfectly good set of strings when your battery runs down. Especially while playing out somewhere. Plus I don't care for those button batteries and would prefer a standard nine volt like the higher end Martins. That said, I would recommend this guitar to anyone who wants a truly fine Martin for a phenomenal price.

Comments about Martin Custom X Series X1-000E Auditorium Acoustic-Electric:

This is a fantastic guitar. I own a Gibson J200, Taylor 414ce, Ovation 1864 Balladeer, Ovation 12 string - this is the "go to" guitar. So easy to play out of the box and the action is so nice. Sound is full and brilliant unplugged and the electronics really sound sweet when put through a PA.

To keep the price down Martin does not provide a case...my only reason for not giving it a 5. It seems a little fragile compared to my other acoustics. It has held up very well after 2 years of gigs.

If you want a great Martin at a great price this is IT! I am extremely pleased with the sound and quality that I would buy another as a backup.

Comments about Martin Custom X Series X1-000E Auditorium Acoustic-Electric:

Yeah, it's Mexican made. Yeah, there's no gloss finish. Yeah, you have to loosen the strings or destring just to change the preamp battery.

Complaints aside, the 000E sounds like a dream right out of the box. THe fretboard is smooth as silk. The neck fits like it was made for my hand. Unplugged, this guitar rings like a bell and sustains nearly as well as my HD-28 (nearly... nothing I've played lately comes close to the HD-28). Plugged in, it sounds just as well as unplugged with all FX off. The soundhole control dials are a tad unwieldy, making it nearly impossible to adjust on the fly.

For the price, though, a clear sounding Martin 000 for 499 (on sale), you can't beat it. This instrument and I will spend a lot of time together on stage.
