Back in July I wrote a review on the 000X1AE Martin X-Series guitar. I was thoroughly impressed with the bang for the buck I got initially. However I realized I was just not a "000" guy as the sound was underwhelming when strummed beside my Dreadnought Yamaha. So this review is about the Dreadnought X version I purchased and its comparison to the 000X1AE.

First off - this guitar was hand picked from a handful of DX1AE's. I had the luxury of trying many of them out, and yes, they are different from each other. I even brought my 000 to the store to make sure I wasn't making a mistake; I wasn't. The guitar I picked was the deepest sounding of them all, which was my aim. I mulled over the decision for days while we went out of town but could not shake the idea of owning it. My wife would have never gone for it had I not conjured up some promise to not buy one again for 2 years. Needless to say I went home a happy boy and am not sorry I bought it.

Each time I pick up the instrument I grin. The bass is so deep I almost burst into tears and can't resist the Fmaj7 and open G chords. I've played higher end Martins that sound like this but cost 2-3x as much. This guitar is 100% Martin but more cheaply manufactured. To explain the lush tone - think Tom Petty's "Wildflowers". You Tube the song if you are unfamiliar with what I'm talking about. I can capo to 3 and nail it every time. For this price it's practically stealing.

The guitar is not without its shortcomings however. I have some large gripes, mostly with the electronics and the construction. The fishman sonotone pickup system is very unimpressive on both models. In fact I wish they scrapped it altogether for a new system that implemented a 3-band EQ for much better control over your guitar's tone when amplified. The two wheels underneath the soundhole control Volume and Brightness. This is only slightly better than a shadetree luthier's installation of an undersaddle pickup with an output jack. The guitar itself naturally sounds honky through any system and that cannot be remedied unless EQ'ed at the board or in-line. My preferred solution? I use an Ibanez GE-9 in between the guitar and the board which allows me a little personal control over how the guitar sounds before it hits the front. I virtually scoop all frequencies between 250 and 600hz and boost around 100 and 1,000. If Martin included a soft bag and upgraded the electronics to a 3 band, and jumped the price 100 more, I would be so incredibly happy. They wouldn't lose much by cutting into the HPL to install a 3-band control panel. It is cheap material, which also brings me to another interesting topic - the HPL. H.igh P.ressure L.aminate is not wood; it is in fact laminated wood-patterned plastic. This bothers me as I'm always subconsciously aware that the guitar is half-plastic. Sounds bad, doesn't it? The stuff is durable as all get out - but don't think that you can get away without properly humidifying it. The guitar responds to extreme changes over time by splitting right along the glue lines...that is, body detatches from top and vice versa. This happens when the guitar severely dries out. Durable to an extent, but faulty to another. You hear about it all the time (another reason to subscribe to the warranty).

The top is not glossy which leaves it open to scuffs and dings. Scrape a fingernail across the top and you have a permanent tattoo of what you just did. The back and neck can probably survive a pack of firecrackers so go figure.

With all of my gripes included I still think this instrument is a serious rival. Its major downfalls are the electronics and the construction - but honestly, sitting right next to this guitar was a Taylor 314ce. I could not afford it that day but I still wouldn't have picked it over this one. It made the Taylor sound like a toy, and Taylors are fine, fine guitars. For this reason I knew I found a special guitar. My advice? Try several in person to find "that one". You'll know because you won't leave the store without it.

Comments about Martin X Series X1-DE Custom Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar after going to a guitar shop and trying it out. I immediately fell in love with the rich, bright, sound that Martin's give out. The first guitar I received was great at first but then, the body started to bow in after 3 weeks because of the cold weather here in MA. I called Musician's Friend and they had no problem sending me another one at absolutely no cost. I since then have kept my new one IN IT'S CASE and it hasn't had any problems. The first one may have been poorley constructed. Overall I'm really hoping I don't have to return this one because I'm in love the way she sounds!

Comments about Martin X Series X1-DE Custom Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

    I love this guitar!
I first saw one in a music store and though I had no pick (and little time), it sounded great to me.

So, when I saw an "Open Box" special here at Musician's Friend, I decided to call to find out the details. I spoke with Gabriel and he assured me that the guitar was in mint condition and that it was merely unboxed and returned and he was right on the money because the guitar is flawless!

For the price, this guitar is a true sleeper.
It has many of the attributes of much more expensive guitars but not the cost. The use of resins and laminates is not only eco-friendly, but also serves to prove that a guitar can sound great without having to use natural wood (except for the spruce top).
The guitar is solid, the neck feels great and the fretboard is very smooth.
It was tuned and ready to play right out of the box and the tone is incredible! Solid lows and mids with a high end "pop" if I want it. For me, this guitar is strictly a backyard porch guitar and I didn't want anything booming or overly loud on the high end and this guitar fits that to a "T". But it certainly has the ability to project if that's what I want, so I have the best of both worlds. But I'd expect nothing less from a Martin!

The only issue I had was that the action was about a sixteenth of an inch too high, so I just popped out the bridge and shaved that down a bit (which took all of fifteen minutes) and now she plays like a dream!

I may change the strings from the 12's to maybe 11's (I play 10's in my electric and for me 12's are a bit heavy), but I'm going to wait on that until I've played it for a while as the Phosphor/Bronze 12's sound awesome and I'm not sure I want to change that.

I honestly can't find anything wrong with this guitar and I would highly recommend both it and Musician's Friend to anyone.

Comments about Martin X Series X1-DE Custom Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I heard allot of pros and cons to this guitar. I personally have found no cons for this price. The quality, regardless of materials used. Is unmatched. People think because it made in Mexico it's like, unholy or something. Martin still oversees quality. What's the difference of it being made in America, by diverse ethnic groups. Get over it people, martin quality, or it wouldn't have MARTIN on it. Love it!
Oh and the sound, wow! And that's the bottom line.

Comments about Martin X Series X1-DE Custom Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

      I own a 1953 Martin D-28 & a 1981 HD-35. These are MARTINS!
I needed a 12 string and I was gifted the Martin D12X1AE for Christmas.
It is the same X series as this X1-DE Custom, which is not bad for the price.
Good wood, decent construction, aside from all the HPL, and the complete guitar in "Satin finish" it has fair to good action, and sound. It is Not a
"Martin, Martin!" It is a Mexican Martin. However, all things considered, for the price, it is worth it. But, it shouldn't have the same Martin logo, and headstock as those from Nazareth, PA. Nazareth Martins leave the factory with an unmistakable "Soul" that is close to the other Soul that came from Nazareth, Israel. But, remember, I am a professional guitarist, with BMI, but for a beginner, or novice, it is a great way to break your fingers in, and if you don't make the grade, you haven't wasted a large chunk of dough.

Guitar shipped quickly. We opened the box to find the guitar totally in tune and ready to play! Wonderful warm tone. Looking at the back and sides up close (very close) it's slightly "plastic-y", but NO complaints about that for the price point - looks nice from the front, especially from more than 2 or 3 feet away, so I wouldn't be ashamed of it in a professional setting - sounds and plays great, so why not? If it gets damaged or stolen at a gig, just order another one - you haven't risked an expensive instrument to the perils of gigging, and still enjoyed the playing experience of a quality instrument. I'm more impressed than I thought I'd be, even after reading the very positive reviews that convinced me to get this in the first place.

This is the first Martin I've owned, not the first I've played. I was a little hesitant to buy this from an online dealer becuase I couldn't play it before I bought it but I've dealt with Musicians Friend's before and knew they would take care of me if something went wrong. I like the tone alot. I played an Alvarez before getting my hands on this one and my Alvarez quickly became my back up guitar. I really like the simple design of the guitar too. There is no inlay and no binding around the top, which I dig. Everyone has been talking about the access to the elctronics. I don't know about ya'all but I change out my battery once every 4-6 months anyway so not a big deal.
