I've had this guitar now for about a month. I got the Tiger's Eye finish and it is absolutely beautiful. As for the tone, the EMGs provide the crunch and balls that you would expect. I play mine thru a Peavey 3120 going into a 6505 cab and the sound is amazing. The set neck provides sustain (along with the EMGs) and the fretboard is smooth like butter. The fretboard reminds me of a LTD MH series guitar that I used to have, only it is actually smoother. The action is low without fret buzz. I tend to think of this guitar as a Les Paul (mohagany body - pretty weighty) with a high-end ESP neck. As for the price, why would you not buy this guitar? The only reason I can find for somebody not to buy this guitar is the EMGs. Even then it's a matter personal preferrence.Bottom line - I love this guitar. If it's ever offered with a Floyd Rose and/or a neck-through construction, I would buy that too.GET THIS GUITAR!
Once again Michael Kelly has impressed me. I honestly think that they are the most under appreciated guitar company in the world. This guitar not only is beautiful to look at but sounds KILLER. I am also a fan of Rockfields BUT these EMG 81/85's are FLAWLESS. You absolutely cannot beat this deal. I run mine through a Peavey 6505+ and the monster sound I get is irreplaceable. I STRONGLY reccommend this guitar.
I've been playing for 35 years and have owned at least 100 guitars and basses during this time. The Patriot Premium is exactly that "PREMIUM". I find it amazing that Michael Kelly can build a guitar of this caliber as such a low price point. I have gone over this guitar with a fine tooth comb time and time again and I can't find a single flaw. The abalone and pearl inlay work is perfect. The fit and finish is second to none. The action and intonation was set up perfect right out of the box. The active EMG 81 & 85 pickups are the best in my opinion. The carved Tiger Eye book matched maple top is beautiful. I can't put this guitar down! I record through a "Digidesign Eleven" guitar processor into Propellerhead Record and this guitar shines in the studio. Ultra quite and endless sustain. If Michael Kelly ever offers this guitar with a Floyd Rose tremolo I'll buy it as well. I prefer this guitar over my PRS and it cost me over $2500 less! Is there anything I'd change on this guitar? Yes. I'd offer coil tapping, which is a simple upgrade I've already done myself. You owe it to yourself to audition one of these fine guitars. You won't be sorry.
I have owned this guitar for 3 months and was plesantly relieved when I recieved it. M.K. was a recommendation by one of the customer sales reps after I had recieved two defective units from a different manufacture. Was unfamilar with the company. I echo all the positive comments above. Can't say enough positive things about it. Happy that it was offered with EMG's as I'm a big fan. This unit requires no moding or tweeking it arrived set up and needed nothing. Playability and tone are off the scale. It is hard to put down. Thank you Michael Kelly and Musician's Friend.
I have owned this guitar in Black wash for about 9 months. It has become my favorite when grabbing a guitar to jam. It is well built and I haven't had the first issue with quality or tuning. It is very comfortable and produces a nice sound. Of course it doesn't clean- up like my strat, (MK has EMG's)so its not your best choice for all around music, but what guitar is. If you want a well built guitar that is reliable, nice to look at, comfortable, and can really rock, I would suggest you take a look at the michael kelly guitar line. It really is un- real how they sell these for what they do. Twice the guitar of the PRS SE line. Get it before they catch on!
I have played guitar for over 20 years and will never stop my search for the best guitar, but for now I have came across the new benchmark for this search. I owned may guitars over this time including many Ibanez, Kramer, Fender, & Yamaha. The Micheal Kelly Patriot Premium has put all of these back in their cases to be brought out only when I feel nostalgic. The ebony neck is butter, playability is easy. The EMG pickups are the new classic for this generation. The body style is an update on the classic Les Paul, with the right changes to make it feel like an extension of yourself. It falls naturally around your neck and looks very good while doing it. This guitar is as close to perfect I have found yet. The quality is something you have to feel for yourself. Thanks you Micheal Kelly for bringing this guitar to life.
Great axe for the price. Never had an active PU before, so it took some adjustments on my Marshall JCM800, but now I'm real happy with the sound. Playability is near perfect, as comfortable as my strats, looks unbelievable (blood red)- had to wait a few months on backorder, but SO well worth it. Better than the PRS I tried at the local shop too. Gave a 4.5 on features because of only one volume knob, but totally worth the price!
Just received mine the other day in Tigers eye. My jaw dropped as soon as I opened the box. Better than any Lp I have ever played. The finish is gorgeous, a little darker than the pictures on this site though. The action is better than both my ibanez guitars. Note bending, sweeping arpeggios, finger tapping, done with such ease. The emg's are screamin' of course. I'd love to ramble on some more but I can't put this guitar down!!!
This is my fourth Michael Kelly guitar and my most favorite of all. I have over 40 guitars, LP's, PR's, Fenders and a couple custom made and at this time my Patriot Premium is my favorite in every catagory. It's the tiger eye finish, 24 frets, ebony fretboard and EMG PU's all put together so nicely that I can't put this back into its case. Do yourself a favor and check one out if you can find one. I see that MK already is using Black Betty pu's on his Hex models while mine still had the EMG's. Things change rapidly and the cost of the new ones has already gone up.
I thought I would NEVER find a guitar that I would want to play more than my Fender Deluxe Strat. I also have a Fender '62 Tele, Fender Esprit and a Gibson BFG LP and the Patriot Premium blows all these guitars away in terms of sound, playability and looks. The ebony fretboard is a delight to play and the guitar was all good straight out the box. I just do not know how these guys produce such a fine instrument for such a price! Forget PRS too - this axe is as good IMO for a fraction of the cost. I would be heartbroken to lose it and would buy another in a heartbeat. Only reason it gets a 4.5 on features is I would have liked the coil tap on the pups like the cheaper models.
