music man john petrucci 6 string non-piezo

Features:

Straight forward controls - rubbered knobs but with no gradation for volume and tone control and conveniently placed toggle switch for 3 position pickup configuration: 1. neck - warm but a little muddy for rhythm if EQ not pulling down the mids.  2. middle - 'out-of-phase-Stratty' sound, quieter. 3. bridge - bright attack.

Locking tuners are simply excellent and thus the whammy bar is a delight at coming back to pitch even after frenzy! For restringing, slacken off the lock and line up the hole (I'd need glasses anyway to thread a new string on any guitar), thread and pull tight and lock. Need to stretch well, but you would anyway.

I 'lurve' the feel of the neck, the 15" radius is fantastic but, with small hands, I do find the width of the neck (57.2 at last fret) inhibitive for 6 string sweeps or lower string arpeggio tapping.

Quality:

There is no doubt about this. The first I had, I favoured over a Fender Showmaster, and came to depend upon its sound/facility so that with a broken string mid-song I was never happy with picking up the 'other'. When the time was right and I got the chance, I got a second - slightly lighter and with 'mystic dream' finish.

Value:

Truly an excellent, versatile and reliable guitar that looks, feels and sounds great. Have only had to replace the jack sockets, but use radio now and so no longer an issue!

Overall:

Really wonderful guitar. Still love the Fenders and Gibsons, but this can do both jobs.

However, for reasons mentioned, am thinking of trading one in for a 'Luke' . . .

Ok first off, I never write reviews, however; I just bought this guitar today and have no choice but to give in and do so! This guitar is OUTSTANDING! As an Ibanez fan (which I almost bought a prestige S series) it's no wonder Mr. Petrucci is now playing one of these. The volume knob is out of the way from your picking, the switch couldn't be placed any better, the pichups are perfect, and the neck joint alows easy and effortless access to the 24th fret without the :withered hand" look lol. The entire sales pitch for this peice should be summed up in two simple words BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!

I bought this guitar about 8 years ago or so. I went to the guitar center and after trying some similarly priced strats (fat and single coil) and some ibanez side by side I chose this guitar. The neck is very fast smooth and comfortable. Comfortable is this guitars forte. It's light, sits on your leg and doesn't move, it's balanced. The tuners are quality, the pickups are great, the bridge has tons of bite and cut, the mid has that strat single coil feel articulation, sensitivity and twang, and the rhythm position has great smooth full rounded sounds that really fill a room. My only complaint about this guitar is the tremolo system, I stretch my strings constantly, use the whammy bar lots but she still falls out of tune mildly, or enough to hear the difference after a substantial whammy move. If whammy bar is a vital component of your style I would sugguest getting a Vai or Satriani model with the edge tremolo because I hear they hold tune much better. (but can be a pain to set up and keep set up). Other than that an awesome guitar for a very reasonable price. If you can step it up to the more expensive model with the piezo do it because you'll have more tone options. I am kinda pissed at John for not making any pull nobs like the Satriani model to give you more sounds. Other than that awesome quality instrument, Music Man is also one of the last quality companies out there making guitars that rival the quality of the old days (gibsons and fenders) according to keith richards. Oh yea and the arm cutaway is a godsend for your picking arm, so comfortable, and you can rest your hand lightly on the bridge and it doesn't fall out of tune. A great guitar for a great price. Looks beautiful too, full of quality.

Petrucci JP6 basic model.  This is a nice guitar.  It is made well, it sounds nice and it stays in tune well.  I think the quality is higher than similarly priced famous name brand models such as American Fender Strats and American Gibson Les Paul Studio's.  It feels kind of like a strat.  The middle pickup combination on the three way switch makes it sound twangy which is a really nice feature.  The neck pickup is fluid and full sounding.  The bridge pickup is so-so (a seymour pickup will make a big difference).  Ernie ball makes top quality instruments.  I've never played a nicer, more well made guitar.
