This is my 4th gibson. I own two Sg standards and a LP Traditional. This being my first P90 guitar I wasn't sure what to expect. After having played with it for a week and comparing to my others its a keeper. To cut to the chase they are noisy with a lot of distortion and have learned to find the sweet spot with my pedals. I'm playing through a Fender DR head and 2x12 cab with greenabacks. This guitar sounds so sweet clean. Really shimmery and punchy at the same time. With low to moderate overdrive and distortion its sounds killer. Makes my Sg's sound a little "tinny" for a lack of a better word when comparing. These P90s just have a punch to them. The neck on mine was a little rough around the edges and was a little worried when I first inspected it. After a closer look I could see that the fingerboard was really dry and the frets were starting to poke out a bit on it. So I placed it in a humidity controlled area when not playing hoping that was the problem. Turns out it was. Once it adjusted back the frets weren't so sharp and the fingerboard looked better between the frets. Not so curved in. Kind of weird for a new guitar but was a minor thing. Love it and would buy it again in a heart beat.

I got the '14 wine red Gibson LP MM today. I was really looking forward to hearing it with the 2 P-90 pickups. It turns out the guitar feels good, lightweight, easy to play for the most part, but the pickups are kinda flat - and it seems to sound as good as they can using both pickups at the same time. My Ibanez RG4231 and Epi Les Paul Goth with the DiMarzio Super Distortion 2 pickups I added to both of them in the bridge sound far better imo than these do in this guitar. It's a nice guitar to add to my collection, and MF gave me a good deal on it - but will not be one of my "go to" guitars by any means

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

I have a Double Cut Standard Plus-- all I can afford-- and cherish it. But I just bought the new Les Paul Melody Maker rolled out just for the 120th anniversary with the updated P-90's and I must say, Gibson Guitars knocked that bad boy out the park. They also priced it far too low. It and a new case, plus a 30FT Monster cable was a fantastic deal. They are nearly giving the instrument away. Played through my Vox AC30C2 the guitar sounds like wind chimes at times.

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

I love the whole concept of stripping down a Les Paul to its bare essence without losing any vibe. Love the P-90s, love the wrap-around bridge/tailpiece, love the Kluson button tuners, love the budget-minded thin mahogany body w/ carved maple cap. After a week of not being able to put down my TV yellow model, I bought a second in wine red because Gibson tends to not keep marginal models around very long, and I'm guessing these may soon become highly sought-after (especially at this price). The second axe had some fret buzzing, even after swapping the factory .09 strings for .11's, but a few truss rod twists and bridge adjustment solved that. My only gripe is aesthetic. I've never liked black plastic pickup covers and knobs on any finish other than traditional Cremona sunburst, so I modified both specimens with cream pickup and back plate covers, gold speed knobs, amber toggle switches, and blank truss rod covers. Now they look like early 50s prototypes. This is a perfect guitar for raunchy rock and swampy blues. Where has this incarnation been for the past 60 years?

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

This guitar sounds really nice! The P-90s are the deal breaker. After I heard my teacher use a custom guitar with P-90s, I was convinced to get the tone. I found that tones are great on this guitar. You can get smooth, warm jazz tones with the neck pickup and a nice roaring bite that cuts through the mix with the bridge pickup. I went for a used model, and it was basically perfect. The only problem I`ve noticed is that tuning the thing is a constant. It goes out of tune often, which is why I dropped a star. The e, b, and g strings are also hard to get perfect, and they tend to buzz when played at the higher frets.

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

Went through two of these. The first one had a defective truss rod, glue and tool marks on the fretboard, and a small chip in the headstock. Pickups were so microphonic I couldnt play it at show volume without constant feedback. Sent it back, the second one came, it was visually perfect, one of the best playing guitars I have ever touched. The pickups were more microphonic than the first, overwhelming feedback. I returned it too.

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

I think Gibson hit a home run everyone needs a p90 guitar in their arsenal and at this price point you have to grab it. The quality of the build and pickups are well worth the price. I like it better then the original Melody Maker its like a cross between a Melody maker and a Les Paul Custom Lite. Made in the USA! What more can you ask for, also this is great for a beginner or student. I love this guitar I've been playing for 25 years plus, my guitar did not need a setup and it absolutely howls! Gibson has done the right thing. My advice to anyone who's been buying guitars for years looking for the right one is to buy a Gibson Custom it is superior to any guitar in the world even Gibson USA and you will never look for another one, but to have a knock around or for your first guitar this is the one. I can't see this guitar being around to long.

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

This may be a stripped-down Les Paul, but it is a genuine Les Paul, US made in Nashville TN! No fancy binding or fretboard inlays, no pickguard, fancy woods or glossy finishes, but everything that makes a Paul a Paul is there. Mahogany body (albeit thinner than a typical Paul), carved maple top, Kluson Deluxe tuners, seperate tone and volume controls for each pickup. And the pickups are fantastic!! I have been a P-90 fan since I aquired my first Gibson, a 1958 Les Paul Junior (yes - I wish I still had that!!) in 1966. Including this one, I have had four Gibsons over the years, three of them with P-90 pickups (plus two Epi's with P-90's). They are smooth and sweet with more definition than a humbucker, yet higher output and thicker, richer sound than a typical Fender-style single coil. Indeed, the are the best of both worlds. The sound I get from this guitar through my Fender Excelsior tube amp is amazing. My wife even noticed the difference in tonal texture between this and the several other relatively inexpensive guitars that I seem to have accumulated over the years.
The action was a bit low out of the box with some fret buzz, but a tweak of the bridge and truss rod took care of that while still keeping it an incredibly easy guitar to play. The Gibson PLEK system of nut slotting and fret dressing that is used on their high-end instruments is used on this guitar as well.
The intonation was off quite a bit, and adjusting the position of the bridge took care of most of it, but still a bit off on the low E and A strings. I have an adjustable wrap-style bridge coming that should solve that problem. I guess Gibson's typical pre-shipment setup was foregone in an attempt to keep the price down.
All-in-all though, this is a genuine US-made Gibson Les Paul at an Epiphone price. Buy one for yourself, you'll love it!!!

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

My quiver was missing a Les Paul -> this was the one that won my auditioning process. LP Standard are way too thick and heavy for my tastes, as are Studios, especially for live performance. My lead guitar player has an LP Axcess with EMG and Floyd Rose that is the bomb. But it is the only one in the entire world as far as I can tell.

I'm a black, EMG, set or through neck, light weight guitar kind of guy and the Melody Maker - well, its the thinnest, blackest LP I could find.

P90 sound is classic, the 120th Anniversary inlay on the 12th fret is cool and the padded gig bag is a plus. The neck is a club compared to most of my "shredders" but it is growing on me.

I do not like the non-adjustable bridge, even though intonation seems fine. Really like the volume and tone knobs used, not crazy about the bone colored tuner knobs. I went (guess) manhattan midnight satin for color. The tone color is very adjustable with the 4 knobs and a switch.

Made in USA Gibson! While I don't think I'll use it as a stage guitar, it will be great for practice and recording with that good ole LP sound. About the only other advice I'd give it to check out the LPJ if you're looking to purchase a Melody Maker as the LPJ has an adjustable bridge and the body might be a tad thicker, neck may be a bit different as well.

This guitar is a fantastic way to get yourself into a quality USA made Gibson with out breaking the bank. I cant afford a new les paul standard or SG,I upgraded from my epiphone les paul to this guitar. I'm not gonna slam Epiphones..mine played like butter, looked nice, sounded ok. but this guitar..you play a chord unplugged and it just rings. I could tell the difference right away (from my Epiphone that didnt ring at all).I was shocked at how cool this guitar sounded CLEAN the p90s are sweet. Do it...Do it :)

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

I was turned on to this model by a luthier friend. So I checked it out on the M.F. website & ordered one.

It truly is the first guitar I've ever owned that played right out of the box!

Plain, simple rocker, that happens to play surprisingly well clean.

But please, push this little yellow jewel with an overdrive pedal; you'll be glad you did!

I have always been a Fender guy, but this guitar has my attention. I originally bought it for open D/E slide work, but I'm getting another guitar with P-90s for that. This has become my backup Blues/Rock stage guitar!

This is a very solid and very well made guitar. The tone from the p90's is excellent and full. The look and feel are incredible, you can't get a better full featured Les Paul Model at this price!

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

The bridge pick up was loose in the cavity. I could rock the pick up 1/8 inch in either direction. The specs shows the guitar equipped with speed style knobs, but mine came with tophat style knobs. They were numbered, but the knobs were put on in different positions. The flat plastic washer that surrounds the three way switch was placed on crooked. There is fret buzz at the tenth fret even though the bridge is high. Out of the box the adjustment bolt on the wrap around bridge was showing signs of wear, where someone adjusted the screw bolt without loosening the allen screw. This guitar was sold as new, shipped to me in the box. It makes me suspicious that this guitar was a restock. If not, Gibson's quality control is lacking. Because it is an inexpensive guitar I am keeping it and fixing the problems rather than send ot back. If you want to get into the Gibson line for little cost, this is the guitar. I really like the tone of the P90s and I like the wider, 50s style neck. The finish is beyond satin, flat would be a better description. All in all, I would recommend this guitar.

A good playing guitar out of the box. I played it for approx. 20 hours and noticed that the satin finish started to get a glossy shine; I decided that over time the finish would only get worse so I sent it back and upgraded to a Gibson Studio. If it were for the finish problem I would have kept the guitar.

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

This was my fisrt Gibson. The neck is nice and fat. It was well setup out of the box. Sounds great and very comfortable to play. The bag it comes with is very well padded and nicely constructed.

My only complaint is someone at Gibson decided to use a "satin chrome" finish on the bridge. It makes the bride LOOK like a cheap piece of plastic. I doesnt make any difference otherwise. The intonation is great.

Comments about Gibson 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

Fit and finish is not perfect, but not bad. No complaints there. I ordered the manhattan midnight. It seems black in the pictures, but it is actually dark dark BLUE. It even says blue on the box. It would pass for black at a glance, but if you look closely, BLUE. This wasn't a problem for me, it's a good looking guitar, but it's worth mentioning. The thin, light body was pleasant, and all electronics functioned perfectly. I like the p90's. They sound good clean or dirty, no complaints. The tone is somewhat different than humbuckers, but still more meat than most Fender single coils have. To me they are sort of like a 70% humbucker and 30% single, if that makes any sense. They were a little noisy, but not terribly so. Gig bag is ok, with adequate padding. NOW FOR THE BAD: Intonation was lousy. Every string was sharp at the 12th fret, a couple were WAY sharp. This was a deal-breaker since intonation on this is not adjustable. Most of them may be fine, I don't know, but mine was off. I also didn't like the big chunky '50's neck. I'm used to a Gibson slim taper, and a Tele. Compared to those, this thing is really thick. Seems odd to me that they chose this neck for their thinnest, lightest model. Some folks will like it, but I didn't. BOTTOM LINE: If this guitar feels good to you, and intonates properly, it is absolutely worth buying. Unfortunately, mine just didn't agree with me. I'm sending it back and buying the LP Studio.

Put it this way, in 1999 I bought a new Les Paul "Standard" at ******* I paid two thousand and change. Was that guitar twice as nice as this one? Probably. Three times as nice? nope. Four times as nice? absolutely not. Yet it was four times the price of this one.

If this was my only guitar, I'd be fine.

Well, the three way switch was defective out of the box, the finish was streaky, the neck was bowed and the intonation was incorrect. When you bend the strings above the 15th fret they slide and ping on the bridge. Payed to get it set up and it was still wrong. The switch was under warranty so that's ok. It was a gift for Christmas so all in all it's a pretty guitar with good sustain if you fret the strings nice and tight,

I adjusted the truss rod, adjusted the bridge, applied lubricant to the nut, and adjusted the pickup height. The intonation is spot on perfect. Fret ends smooth.
A super playing guitar, with great pickups. The tone of the pickup will change greatly in relation to the distance to the strings.
I love the tone of the p90's, clean, as well as driven. This guitar shines with a tube amplifier.
The TV yellow looks more like a mustard color on mine.
I also added a black LP p90 pickguard to mine, looks outstanding.
Absolutly fun to play. Quality gig bag included. A great way to get a Gibson at a value price. Stays in tune well with nut lube applied.
