OVERVIEW

An innovative mahogany body, topped in flamed maple with a set neck and tappable humbuckers.

The Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar was inspired by a recently uncovered drawing of a prototype done three decades ago by G&L co-founder George Fullerton. The design represented Leo Fender's vision for G&L's first 24.75" scal guitar with three tuners to a side. It was designed jointly by G&L's longtime VP of engineering, Paul Gagon, and his close friend and former collaborator, Grover Jackson, founder of Jackson Guitars.

Although its DNA is full of rock guitar history, it breaks new ground for G&L: it has a set neck, a Leo-inspired headstock with three tuners to a side, and a 24.75" scale to put it squarely on the classic side of the rock'n'roll stage.

Add in a TonePros tailpiece and coil-tapping humbuckers specially designed by Gagon, and you have a gorgeous, high-performance rock guitar that's simultaneously strikingly new and steeped in rock guitar history. Case sold separately.

This thing was set up perfectly right out of the box. Nice tonal range and simple operation. Push/pull knob changes pick up configuration as advertised. For the low price you get a whole lot of well built guitar, which is a G&L Tribute hallmark. I played a few MIM and lower end USA Fenders, and USA Gibsons (studio) while looking for a classic rock ride with humbuckers, and this blows them all out of the water in terms of sound and build quality. Sure, you could get a better guitar if you wanted to spend a whole lot more cash, but in my particular situation it wasn't necessary. My second G&L.

I'm a long-time G&L player and I own an ASAT Classic, a Legacy, and the Ascari with P-90s (which is fully awesome), so when I saw this one on sale, it was an easy decision to order it. When I got it, I plugged it in and it sounded great. It also was surprisingly playable right out of the box with nice low action, no fret buzz and decent intonation- which was surprising since these Indonesian guitars don't normally come with a good set-up.

Now the bad part. I soon noticed there were a variety of cosmetic issues with the guitar, most notable was a nasty cloudy haze covering most of the headstock, underneath the finish. Also, the control knobs were both set crooked, and there were a couple minor defects in the finish and hardware too. Due mainly to the visibility of the headstock blemish, I elected to exchange it for another one, and Musician's Friend was very accommodating.

Now the really bad part. The second one I received had the same ugly blemish on the headstock. In fact, I never even played it because I knew it would be going back too. This guitar also had been poorly packed and was missing the styrofoam disc that should've covered the 3-way switch. Possibly because of that, the lid of the box had been pushed down against the bridge to the point where the strings and saddles had shredded though the foam bag.

I initially asked for yet another replacement, but when I saw how many 'open-box' items there were available, I thought better of it and requested a refund instead. I think these issues might be widespread and sending a third guitar back would've been a big hassle. Its too bad because if it had not been for these very avoidable quality control issues, this Ascari would've made a sweet addition to my collection. C'mon G&L, you can do better.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

This has become my favorite...just a nice playable neck with a sweet low action. Maybe it's the fretboard radius, but this neck is very comfortable. It's light enough and balanced nicely. It makes me practice more and more often.

The fit & finish are perfect. The flamed maple top was very well matched at the factory.

The pickups are well matched & give a nice bluesy tone with a touch of gain on the amp.

      I love it.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

I have had this for about three months and thought I'd go ahead and share what I think.

At this price point, I'm not sure you can beat this guitar. Its designed for rock, but it seems good for blues or country too.

The guitar has a real nice feel and weight to it. The neck is really smooth and fairly fast. Fretboard is nice as are the frets. Seems to stay in tune well.

The pickups are hotter than typical G&L guitars, but you'd obviously expect that with humbuckers. The neck pickup is just warm enough in tone and the middle position is perfect for solos or a thicker rhythm.

The finish is nice(red). The only minor flaw on mine is there is some red body paint on the neck binding where the body and neck meet. You have to be looking for it to see it and it wasn't bad enough to return.

Overall, really comfortable; good for rock/classic rock; nice finish

I'm going to give it five stars as it is everything it should be at this price point.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

This G&L GTS Ascari is a very decent guitar. Got it last night. And 30 minutes later jamming with it and the guys. Black finish is no flaws beautiful. Weighed in at 8 lbs. 5 oz., a nice sustaining surprise! Pickups are good and strong, lead pu is 13 ohms neck pu is 8.3 ohms in HB mode. Coil split is very cool and better twang than previous reviewers say. Gets you into any turf you want. TonePro's TP and bridge are an added plus, tuners work smooth and well. G&L logo, fingerboard, and headstock crown pearl inlay's are nicely done. Carved maple top and all counter sunk controls are done well and very cool. Body and neck cream binding adds to the beauty. Full size volume pot. Setup was done perfect from the factory. This axe doesn't need much other than a good player. Everything electronically is staying where it is. I've been playing a long time and have owned most of them all at some point or other. Gotta say I've spent more than double and got less from bigger names. Action is great and the neck feels super fast and comfortable. Its well balanced. Its a hybrid of sorts, a cross between LP and Strat land with LP scale and set neck, Strat body with the single coil tap. Gives you both in sounds and then some. Its a really beautiful guitar. If you can play you'll like the Ascari GTS.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

Great guitar, pleasantly surprised at how nice it is! The Ascari GTS is worth the asking price, but if you get it on sale it is a steal! Great fit an finish, nice set-up out of the box, great tones with the stock pickups. If you are looking at Epiphone Les Pauls with bound necks, give this guitar a try.....Don't get me wrong I have Epi's as well, but the Ascari just feels better, and the fit and finish is nicer to boot! I have purchased other guitars on "Deal of the Day", like ESP LTDs, and was very disappointed when I opened the box. With the G&L Ascari I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived, and could not believe the quality for the price! IMHO this is the best and most underrated "cheap" guitar in the market. Plays like a high end guitar, in fact better than some that I own!

Just got this as a deal of the day, although I had been planning on purchasing it at full price eventually. I am very impressed by the quality of the guitar, from the finish to the frets. Set up required no adjustment out of the box, just put on my favorite set of strings. I love the tones this guitar has, from warm cleans, to an overdrive with a bite! Coil tapping is very useful in getting the sound I want with my effects pedals. I would have gladly paid full retail for this guitar.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

This is a beautiful guitar that, like most new guitars, needed some setup when it arrived. I replaced the extremely light gage strings with D'Addario jazz strings. I adjusted the truss rod, bridge height, and intonation. I also adjusted the pickup pole pieces to get good string to sting volume balance. This guitar has very low action and plays great. The tone is also very nice. This guitar is a great substitute for a Les Paul at a much lower price.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

I've been playing off & on for over 45 yrs., guitar & bass and have played about everything. I have always leaned toward Fender products. This guitar is a way cool alternative as a Leo Fender & George Fullerton concept product and gives you both a Fender'ish & some Gibson style qualities with the push/pull tone pot & humbuckers. Thin wide neck & fret work are spot on. Mine is(Black) which fit & finish is perfect. G&L might should have put a better quality switch & control pots, which are slightly cheap feeling but functional but will surfice until I can change them out. Overall for the price per performance, a well worth place & spot in my collection and deserving of the George & Leo legacy for us commoners that won't clean out your bank account. Good for any style music! A great working tool that's fun to play & look at and that sounds awesome!!

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

The guitar workmanship, neck profile, fret job and pickups are top notch. The volume pot is an Alpha, also quality. However, the push-pull switch, the tone pot, and the instrument jack are cheap imports. Why, why, why G&L? Saving a few on an otherwise great guitar is really like shooting yourself in the foot before a race. I think this guitar costs enough that you can't justify cheap electronics. But, I love the guitar so I've already ordered upgrade parts...

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

This is a capable guitar at any level. I tweaked the neck and string height to my shred level action, and there is no buzzing anywhere along the neck = great fret job and finishing work. For comparision, my PRS 408 has a little taller frets, but can't get near this G&L for getting a low fast action. The neck is my favorite shape too, the classic slim taper D profile. Amazing!

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

For the price point it can't be beat. A true winner from G&L. Fits in my TSA-approved SKB hard shell Strat case. I read the backstory of the guitar - based on a recently rediscovered Leo Fender design - and what they've created is a real players instrument for the people. Like a Les Paul and a Strat had a love child. Well reviewed by guitar mags and end users alike and I've found it more than lives up to the press. Well crafted - to my eye it's clear someone really cared about making this beautiful thing. So good and sweet I couldn't name it - it's going to stay Ascari out of tribute to it's creators, designers, and engineers. Tone so clear I can't get away with any off notes during my jam sessions - with my HSS Strat the quack can cover up a missed note since it has that percussive aspect and can blend with the beat. None of that here. Notes shine through loud and clear clean or distorted. Sustain 2-3x longer than my Strat. Pickups sound great to my ear and are a fine place to start for me as I start to develop my own tone. I love my Strat but this Ascari is pushing my musicianship to a new level - time to start brushing up on my scale forms. Thank you for making this guitar!

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

I own several (not a lot) of guitars, including a G&L S500 from around 1995. I've always enjoyed playing that guitar so when I got the urge to look for another dual humbucker guitar, I was intrigued by the Ascari. I was somewhat concerned that the guitar is made in Indonesia. So, I read the reviews (including the one in Guitar Player), went online and watched the demos and decided it was worth the shot, especially when it came on SDOD.

You know how a lot of reviews qualify their ratings with the phrase "for the money"? This is a really good guitar. Period. You can spend a lot more on a guitar and you will likely get some additional quality. The question that any player has to answer for themselves is "is it worth it?" This guitar simply sounds great and was easy to play straight out of the box. The humbuckers are powerful, but clear. The coil-splitting feature is a "nice to have" for me - I wasn't particularly looking for this. The most important part is that the guitar sounds great. (I play it mostly through a Vox AC15, in case that helps.)

Having read some of the reviews, I spent a few extra minutes going over the finish, the binding, etc. I didn't see any issues at all with mine. Everything on the guitar looks neat and professionally done. The wood has a nice amount of flame - not an extreme amount, but enough to be noticed. I have the red finish and its a really sharp looking guitar.

A couple of minor things: the pickup selector feels a little "loose" when I toggle it. Its quiet when I use it, so I'm just going to keep an eye on it. But it isn't an issue at this point. I'm also not in love with the tuners - they're very basic, no name tuners but seem pretty solid. (The S500 has locking tuners that I've come to like alot.)

Bottom line is that I'm really happy with the guitar and have gotten a number of compliments on it from others. If anything happened to this guitar, I would definitely buy another.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

This guitar was advertised as being in mint condition, it was not. The front top pickup cover was dented on both sides and there was a finish flaw. The guitar is a great guitar, everything functions perfectly, it plays well and sounds great. Musicians Friend, sent a new pickup cover, gave me a rebate and a store credit. It should have never been advertised as being "mint" This is the second time that this has happened to me, buying guitars from them.
I had to take this guitar to a luthier for the repairs, this is an inconvenience to me.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

I have played many guitars in this price range and this one beats them all. Neck, fretboard, body, tuners all feel very solid and high quality. The knobs could use an upgrade but are totally fine as is; same could be said for the switch. It works great but feels a little "loose". I really like the variety of sound I can get with the tappable humbuckers. Sounds great clean and distorted. Very fun to play and all frets are very accessible.

I bought mine used, Level 3 ("Good Condition"). Saved 36% (sorry, it won't let me put actual amount) off the price and I can hardly tell it is used. There is a very small scratch near the volume knob and a few very light scratches on the back. I would put a few scratches on it within a month anyway, so no harm there!

Even better than the used price was the shipping. I have never received an item so fast from anywhere. I ordered it on a Wednesday around lunchtime, got the email that it was shipped at 7:30pm that night. Next morning I check the status and it is on the truck to be delivered as of 6:30am! Now, it did just come from one state over, but wow, for standard (4-5) shipping to have it on a truck to be delivered in less than 12 hours is insane!

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

Looked great out of the box. The finish and lines were spot on. It did however require quite a bit of setup to get it playable. The truss was so far out it took 2 days of adjustments to get the neck straight. Once that was dialed in, I for the bridge height and intonation set and it now plays beautifully. The pickups are a bit different and immediately I thought I'd be dropping in some DiMarzios, but after jamming through a practice session with the band, it really cut through well and I think I'll be keeping it stock. The guitar looks great and plays great. I am planning on replacing the push/pull knob and input jack as they seem cheap and I don't trust them.

All in all, if you have the know how to setup a guitar, then this is an extremely great value and plays nice. It's a good gig guitar.

Bought this as condition 2, this looked great(Can't tell it was played), I had the intonation and action set at a local shop. They had not seen a G&L model like this before and were impressed. I also had the guitar cleaned. The fret board was a little dry looking. With a good setup, this will be a great guitar, the sound is great.

Right out of the (double, well-packed) box, this red beauty and I bonded. Not crazy about the coil tap, but every single detail is absolutely First Cabin! I am a Blues Slide player, and have only changed the strings (to DR Pure Blues 11's), but will probably put a Sprague .22cap in to round-out the tone a bit more.

It also fit in my Gator rectangular Strat case.
