Comments about Guild A-150 Savoy Hollowbody Archtop Electric Guitar:

The guitar arrived, well packed by Musicians Friend. The guitar comes with a very well made hardshell case. I opened the case and my first impressions were that it was a very nice guitar, but the action and setup made the guitar unplayable out of the box. Usually I do my own setups but this was beyond my ability. I took it to a local guitar technician and he made it right. Now it plays very well and I enjoy it. I would have gave it a 5 but it was a big disappointment not being able to play it for 2 weeks while it was sorted out.

Comments about Guild A-150 Savoy Hollowbody Archtop Electric Guitar:

The Guild Newark Street Savoy A-150 archtop is a wonderful instrument! The workmanship is excellent: frets are well finished, the neck feels great, no visible flaws in the finish. The hardware is good quality: the Grover sta-tite tuners, the DeArmond pickup, bone nut, all really top-notch. The solid top gives this instrument great acoustic tone. That is the trade-off: lively acoustic tone means feedback when amplified (the top vibrates in response to the strings (good!), the top vibrates in response to the amp (bad!). It's all a matter of you needs: if you need something that you will need to amplify to be heard over a drummer playing with sticks, then get yourself a laminated-top hollow-body or a semi-hollow guitar like a 335. If you play solo, or with acoustic bass and drummer using brushes, the Savoy will sound wonderful will light amplification.

Now on to the things I don't like. When I strung it up with Tomastiks I found it really hard to get the old strings out of the tailpiece, and to get the new strings seated into the tailpiece. It's just a bit tight for the ball ends of the strings. Not a big issue, but it was a pain to change strings. With the solid top and the nice acoustic tone, I can't help but wonder what this thing would sound like if that thick, plastic straightjacket (i.e. the shiny poly coat) were stripped from the body and a nice thin nitro lacquer applied. I do love the sound, so I can't really complain, but I can only imagine it would sound even better with a nitro finish.

Now, on to the real issue. The volume pot is mounted to the pickguard, and the back of the pot rests about 1/8" above the top of the guitar just above the F-hole. The hardshell case doesn't have enough clearance to accommodate the volume pot and knob. Close the case, the top pushes the Vol pot into the guitar top cracking the finish and the wood! Every used Savoy I have seen has this crack repaired! Hey Guild, ditch the case and ship these things in gig bags!

          Service and delivery comments:

I bought this as a scratch-and-dent model, knowing it had a crack in the top. Not a hard repair, and I got a good price, but Guild should not ship this guitar in a case that cracks the solid top. MF wouldn't have to sell so many at a scratch-and-dent discount if they could fix this issue, or just ship it in a nice gig bag.

Delivery was really quick, guitar was well packed, MF has this down.
