When I moved to China, I left my U.S. made Balladeer with my daughter, and brought a Korean made, solid top Celebrity with me. I play 2 or 3 shows per week, and when my old Celebrity was accidentally damaged, I needed a new guitar immediately. A U.S. made guitar is REALLY expensive here, so I decided to buy a Celebrity, and wait until I returned to the states to buy a Standard Elite. After playing 4 shows with the CC 44, I don't think I will buy the Standard Elite...this guitar sounds that good. Like all round back Ovations, if you play standing up, just move the strap botton to the bottom side of the neck to keep the guitar from rotating belly up, and you are good to go. Really a nice guitar...don't hesitate to buy one!!
I bought my Celebrity CC 44 in Shanghai, where I have lived for 3 years. It has a beautiful sunburst finish that doesn't even appear on the Ovation web-site. My guitar came with an OP30 preamp, which is an ugrade from the standard OP-4BT preamp. Also, I will never buy another center sound hole model...the multi sound hole design just sounds better...more volume, and better sustain.
The action was perfect with the stock EXP light strings - very low, with no fret buzz. The action was so low in fact, that tuned down to D, it started to buzz. Super easy to fix...I just put on some heavier strings, which pulled the neck just right, AND added some nice bottom end. Tuning shifts a little when using a capo, which is annoying but I use the onboard tuner to re-tune with the capo in place. This takes only 10 seconds or so.
Cosmetics aren't 100% perfect, but my CC 44 does not look, feel, play, and most importantly, does not sound like an inexpensive "assembly line" guitar.

I was in love with this guitar's physical beauty for maybe two months before its less-than-par personality began to show through. I will say that everyone comments on this guitar's wonderful cosmetic appeal (when referring to it I often hear 'oh you mean your really pretty guitar?'). But I will also say that among my guitarist friends it is roundly hated. The no. 1 biggest issue with this guitar is the action. It is set extremely high and any attempt to lower it results in resounding buzz that obscures its already questionable tonal quality. Even with the action set factory-high, metal strings (elixir nanoweb extra lights if you must know) lead to continuous buzzing that not only make my audiences plug their ears but make me feel like a terrible player. Martin silk and steels alleviate the issue somewhat, but the guitar still feels like its got an attitude problem. The plugged-in sound gives a very Stephen Lynch is-that-really-an-acoustic-guitar tone that, while it makes me feel funny like Stephen Lynch, does not inspire me to write the next Stairway to Heaven. Feedback is terrible when you make the mistake of distorting this whiny little kid, although its electronics do offer a fairly good way to tweak the terrible tone coming out of this pretty little box.I plan to sell it to some other unwary soul who will again be enamored of its physical beauty and forget to get to know it first. I am a bad person but I will soon have a good guitar.

Best Ever

By BestofBest

Comments about Ovation Celebrity CC44 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is the best I have ever had. It has a built in tuner, and it is the best acoustic-electric ever! If anyone is not sure about purchasing or not, I'd say, "Buy this. It is the best of the best!" Before, I played on a Martin and a Yamaha. Nothing can be compared to this guitar.

Great Introductory Guitar

Comments about Ovation Celebrity CC44 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The Ovation CC-44's mid-depth bowl is enough to provide just the right balance between richness of sound and articulation, which is exactly what I was looking for and is a staple of the ovation sound. Action was quite high with D'Addario medium strings. When my tech lowered the action and put super lights on, he noticed that many of the frets were uneven and needed dressed. Now, playability is nice. The pre-amp needs an upgrade as it is not as responsive as it should be. Outside EQs are needed to shape your sound the way you want it. The tuner is a nice feature and is accurate. Although this review may sound a bit mixed, I do play this guitar every day. Although I am saving to upgrade to an Ovation 2778AX Elite with the deep contour bowl.

The best Acoustic/Electric you can get

By Tony Moore

Comments about Ovation Celebrity CC44 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

There is no replacing this guitar. Ovation really made a beautiful sounding guitar. The bowl-back combined with the unique sound-hole distribution produces a wonderfully crisp yet smooth acoustic sound. And that's just unplugged...When you plug this baby in, the built-in pickup, equalizer, and tuner really help out. The tuner works whether you're plugged in or not, which is perfect, and the equalizer really helps when you're running through an amp. It gets good volume, works great for those blues improv's, and it still holds that acoustic sound when projected through an amp or mixer.Hands down, this is the best guitar you can get, and that's not even considering the price! It's a good value, a good quality, and an overall perfect guitar.

Awesome, Incredible A/E Guitar

By TIMMMMMMMMMMMM

Comments about Ovation Celebrity CC44 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This A/E guitar is fantastic! The sound is incredible: deep, rich tone. Excellent resonation, as the sound rings for a long time. I gave it a 4.5 just for 2 reasons: The back of the neck is painted black, which wasnt apparent in the description, or in the pictures. They should have kept the back of the neck the natural color. The other reason is the action. I wish it was a little lower. I took 2 shims out, and it went to low, causing a buzz. I put 1 shim back, and it was little lower, just not as low as I wanted.Overall, an incredible guitar, for a fantastic price.

It Worth More Than What I've Paid

Comments about Ovation Celebrity CC44 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I'm a luthier who also works in the clubs. I bought this for myself. It is a pretty axe with good quality. I didn't find any "Dead-Spot" as what I've read from the feedbacks here. The factory set action is mid to low but it could be adjusted to a very low action. But don't forget to adjust the truss rod or you will have the string-buzz.

Excellent intermediate acoustic

By Guitarman

from Australia

Pros

  • Built In Tuner That Works
  • Excellent Build Quality
  • Feels Really Nice To Hold
  • Stays in tune well
  • Unique Look And Tone

Cons

  • None yet

Best Uses

  • Jamming With Mates
  • Practice
  • Small gigs
  • Strumming Along At Home

Comments about Ovation Celebrity CC44 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The Ovation CC44 is a guitar that some love and some hate. Play one next time you are at your local store and you will be able to tell pretty quickly. For me, this is the perfect guitar to sit around and strum/practice, and apparently a lot of people gig with them too. Also has a built in tuner which works quite well and and the hardware/build quality are all of a high standard. I cannot comment on the pickup as yet as I have not plugged it in.

In comparison to the low end taylors, low end takamines and high end yamaha and corts available where I live within price proximity, this one just felt much more right to me and the price I got was amazing for an Australian seller (we can't ship from any of the great online US music shops).

Low playing action for a lower priced acoustic
roundback is comfortable to play
Unique appearance
In my opinion, a great tone
Stays in tune well

I cannot stress enough that the looks and tone of this axe aren't for everyone. Test one before buying and you will see what I mean. I love it,but I van easily understand that it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.
