I chose Ovation for its reputation and value, but was concerned about the negative points mentioned in so many other reviews. I got the Standard Elite 2778AX, and am quite satisfied. It does not slide off my leg without a strap; the deep contour body feels stable, with or without a strap. The unplugged sound is not weak; it projects well, the bass is adequate, and the mids and highs ring clear. Sounds awesome plugged in; the EQ has great range. The top wood finish is beautiful, and the case is lightweight but secure. Downsides? I wish the tuner would cut the feed to the line out when functioning while plugged in. And I think the ?owner?s manual? it shipped with is lame. It is not model specific (it keeps referring to the ?Celebrity?!). Other than that, I am happy with my purchase.
I just my 2778 in the mail yesterday. Here is the good and the bad. The good: The guitar plays really well and sounds very nice too. Has that Ovation acoustic sound, which hopefully, if you're buying an Ovation, you're looking for. It also looks beautiful. The bad: On close inspection, the construction is clearly where they have cut some corners. It's made in Korea, and the bridge and nut for example aren't finished as nicely as I'd like. But hey, given the price and the sound of the guitar, I can live with this. Plus, I bought it used from MF, and it's basically new, so no complaints. Overall, nice playing and sounding guitar that should keep you happy. If you spend more, you'll probably get a better product.
