Stone Sour's frontman designs a hot signature JR Special and helps support the Wounded Warrior Project.
The JR Special electric guitar is an exclusive Peavey Custom Shop signature model co-designed by guitarist Josh Rand of three-time Grammy-nominated rock powerhouse Stone Sour. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the JR Special will benefit wounded U.S. soldiers via the Wounded Warrior Project.
A flattop, basswood electric guitar based on the award-winning Peavey HP Special, the JR Special is outfitted with a DiMarzio PAF Joe humbucking pickup in the neck position and a DiMarzio X2N humbucker in the bridge position, with the patented Peavey Dual Compression tailpiece and a bolt-on maple neck. Even more striking, however, is the unique artwork: the official U.S. Army digiflage camouflage pattern with a satin finish, applied using Peavey's patented ArtGuitar printing process.
Josh Rand says the first time he played the HP Specials, they sounded and felt great, and that the construction was awesome. Josh and his tech discussed a signature model with Peavey. Josh Rand's signature model is the first to have a reversed headstock, and its neck dimensions are customized to what is most comfortable to the Stone Sour guitarist. He also had it wired for two volume controls, one for the front and one for the back, with a 3-way pickup switch.
The inspiration for the guitar's digiflage graphics as well as the charitable initiative came late one night while Rand wound down from a Stone Sour gig on the Come What(ever) May world tour. "It was one o'clock in the morning and a program came on about a soldier who lost both legs from a grenade," he said. "It made me think about how some soldiers who go to war come back changed forever. Simple things that we take for granted are quite a task for someone in that position.
"I thought it would be cool to give up part of the profit from my guitar to these guys, and it came together really quickly after that, like it was supposed to be that way. So now we're going to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project." The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) is to raise public awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members to aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.
