A jazz archtop that's breaking barriers.

The result of a collaboration between Paul Reed Smith and Paul Jackson, Jr., the JA-15 was originally designed with jazz musicians in mind. But with several innovations, it's no surprise rockers are loving it too. Highlights include a "pattern" neck shape, 53/10 pickups, a 2-piece adjustable bridge, and "V12" finish, all newly offered as standard appointments.

The warmth of the spruce top paired with the high-end clarity of the figured maple back creates a resonance in this guitar that is balanced with tonal clarity, and the simple control layout makes the JA-15 a joy to play.

The JA-15 incorporates the following new features:

V12 Finish
Finish should enhance the look, sound, and feel of a guitar by accentuating the wood's inherent beauty and feel without hindering its natural resonance. And PRS Guitars' new "V12" finish does just that. Introduced at Experience PRS 2010, "V12" is a very thin, hard, and clear finish that will not crack or react with thinners. After roughly 12 years in development, it is halfway between acrylic and nitro but with a classic feel all its own. "PRS models with this new finish feel like old instruments," said Paul Reed Smith.

Pattern Neck Shape
Neck shapes have always been a high priority for PRS and a hallmark of their quality. A guitar should feel comfortable, like "home," as soon as you pick it up, and the neck is paramount to that connection. Perfected after years of prototyping, the new "Pattern" neck is an updated Wide Fat PRS neck style based on Paul's pre-factory design. These necks were found on the instruments built for Carlos Santana, Peter Frampton, and Howard Leese from the late '70s to the mid '80s.

Whether in woodworking, machining, or cast and die work, patternmaking is the art of arriving at a perfect standard which can be duplicated or used to create new designs from by "offsetting." All PRS necks came to be as a result of offsetting from this original, Wide Fat design.

53/10 Pickups
The 53/10 pickup is the latest in the series of humbucking pickups that already includes PRS 57/08 and 59/09s (and the smaller aperture 57/08 Narrowfield). First debuting as part of a limited run in the summer of 2010, the distinct 53/10 is the warmest-sounding of the vintage themed bunch. The 53/10 coil wire is made on the same machine that supplied legendary guitar makers in the fifties. Wire specifications for the 53/10 are slightly different than the others and are made using a special process reserved for a single-coil bridge pickup circa 1953; however, the 53/10 is a humbucking pickup. Smith commented, "There are single-coil guitars from that era that are beautifully big, fat sounding guitars." With that tone as inspiration, 53/10 pickups are similar to the original 57/08 but with a "sweeter" high end.

2-Piece Adjustable Bridge
Previously only prototyped on Private Stock guitars, the new 2-piece adjustable PRS bridge now comes standard on 2 PRS models “ the SC58, and the JA-15. Bridge specifications include triple-weight saddles, triple-weight thumb wheels, large posts, and extra mass. The added weight increases contact points and creates a more resonant, musical instrument. Machining rather than casting give the brass and aluminum bridge a stronger sound, and the quick-change style stoptail doesn™t fall when the strings are removed. œI am calling it the ˜New 2-piece adjustable sound transfer bridge™”We are very happy, said Paul Reed Smith.

Comments about PRS JA-15 with Nickel Hardware Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

To start with I'm a jazz guy at heart, but I play in a contemporary Christian band that samples a whole lot of genre's from more traditional gospel to swing, jazz, blues, and rock/pop. I've owned the JA-15 for about 3 weeks now and I find it hard to put down. The neck is as good as any I have played and the balance is good. It is effortless to play for hours at at time. I love the woody jazz tone of the neck pickup but also have found that I can get a nice driving rock and chicken pickin sounds from the bridge pickup. I find that it's tones are inspiring a whole new look at a lot of the songs we play. It has so much tone that it seems almost a travesty to cover it up with any kind of effects. I've looked at a whole lot of other arch tops over the years and I'm glad I held out for this one. It is truly the guitar of a lifetime. Many thanks to PRS and to Paul Jackson Jr. for this wonderful ax.

    This is one sweet instrument

Comments about PRS JA-15 with Nickel Hardware Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

The JA-15 is very light and feels comfortable either sitting or standing. I needed a neck that would work with my smallish hands and this does admirably well. The neck and bound ebony fingerboard are beautiful, BTW.

Very impressed that all the fittings (bridge, tailpiece, tuners) are custom engineered by PRS and function perfectly. There are no buzzes anywhere and the action can be set very low.

Pickups sound really lively and warm. I have roundwound 11s and it's great for clean jazz tones but with both pickups set it sounds really good for flatpicked fiddle tunes too, almost acoustic guitar tones.

The tone control has useful functionality.

The H/S case is very well constructed and a bit heavy.

I've played this guitar for about twenty hours over the last two weeks and I love it.

Comments about PRS JA-15 with Nickel Hardware Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Is the PRS JA-15 better than my Gibson L5 overall? No

The JA-15 does alot things that the L5 can't do. For one it's size is alot easy to live with during a long session than the L5. After one hour with the L5, it's time for the Bengay. Also the neck and weight balance on the JA-15 allows for small hands to travel effortlessly up and down without the feeling like you're gripping a thick baseball bat. This is where I think the JA-15 shines over the L5 which is why I gave it a 10 for playability. By having a thinner, comfortable neck and good front to back weight distribution, I'm discovering it's easier to play on the JA-15 than my L5. The L5 is your father's guitar and you have to play it with respect. Whereas the JA-15 is more structually forgiving. The new PUs on the JA-15 are rich and sweet sounding. The JA-15 has a clean aura to it's sound. Smooth Jazz, slow Blues, Fusion are her strenghts. "A Rainy Night in Georgia" type of sound. The tone knob does not behave like a typical tone knob. At 5, it's sounds like a Gibson's PAF Hummbucker. From 6-10, it changes the texture of the tone to become more projecting similar to a mid-range boost. I really like this feature. My L5 tone never gets past 3. Anything greater, changes the deep melodic sound into ear piercing hard blues. Not good. I also tried switching on the high gain (channel C) on my Fuchs TDS 100 with the JA-15 and the results were promising. I need to spend more time dialing in the right tone. But at the same time I really did not buy this guitar for Hard Rock despite the marketing hype.

Needless to say, I'm happy with the purchase.

Holy Smokes What a Nice Guitar!

Comments about PRS JA-15 with Nickel Hardware Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This guitar felt great the instant it was handed to me. It feels very substantial and solid. It reminded me of my Gibson ES-335, but the body seemed more contoured to your body and it was very comfortable. It plays wonderfully and the tone, particularly on the neck pickup was very full, warm and even. I couldn't help but think jazz players are going to love this thing. I switched to the bridge pick-up and turned up the gain and was great for rock too. It was the most expensive guitar I've ever played, but it may also have been the best.
