Comments about PRS SC 58 Nickel Hardware Electric Guitar:
If you're looking for a singlecut, 2-Humbucker guitar and the price tag hasn't scared you off, don't even think about looking at anything else. Pick your favorite finish and go for it!
You can read the full list of features above, I'll just go into the specifics that stand out to me. The first thing that I have to say about my finish (Black Gold Wraparound Burst) is that I have not seen a single photo that can truly capture how amazing it looks. The hue of the gold is not over the top or cheesy, but it's also not the plain (yet gorgeous) vintage brown burst that it shows up as in most pics. As soon as you open the case, there's an immediate WOW factor. I have a student who has also just purchased an SC58, but in the McCarty Burst. I don't like it as much as I do mine, but it's still stunning.
The 57/08 pickups are amazing! Very meaty, yet completely transparent. PRS uses original machines and materials from the 50's to make these! That's as authentic as it gets... My definition of good tone is that I want to hear the wood and strings at all gain levels. There's no mud or overhype whatsoever with these pickups. They are clear with a chunky low end and nicely rounded crystalline highs - never piercing. The variety of useful tones in the middle position is beyond anything that I've ever experienced on a 2-Humbucker guitar. Rolling back either volume knob keeps your tone completely transparent.
The Phase III tuners are very stable and the whole guitar sounds more in tune than anything I've ever played (including my other PRS!). That may sound like a trivial statement, but if you're trying to make a living playing guitar, you know how important that is!
The 2 piece bridge does a stellar job transferring resonance to the wood and you can hear and feel that even before plugging in. Every component on this baby is designed with TONE in mind!
Reaching the upper frets is just as comfortable on this singlecut as it is on my doublecut PRS 513 model. No idea how they did it...
Most everyone knows that the worksmanship on all high-end PRSs is second to none. I also own a gorgeous 513 model and both of these guitars are an absolute joy to pick up. From the basic tone and resonance of the woods to the quality of the finishes and components - the look, feel, but especially the sound of a PRS is a top shelf ownership experience. I mean, even the case is a functional work of art!
You kind of have to gulp, calling a $4K guitar a great VALUE, but it really is! I make my living playing and recording music, so I can't really afford to splurge on a pretty piece of "display art" of a guitar. The SC58 is a great investment, because of the quality of tone and playability that you get wrapped in this gorgeous package. That translates to inspiration and great performances!
