Comments about PRS SE Tim Mahoney Electric Guitar:
I've played a couple of American Custom 24s, and this thing gets remarkably close. The intonation is spot-on, and it sustains for days. The sound produced by the pickups is clear, focused and packs plenty of grit. It is a very "modern" sounding guitar and your blues/jazz/classic rock purists might not care for it, but PRS makes the ultimate modern rock guitars and this one is no exception. The build quality and workmanship are as good as anything that I've seen out of Korea.
I've been pretty much a dedicated Les Paul / Singlecut guy for many years, but this guitar has converted me. Considering how much lighter and less dense it is compared to a Les Paul body style, the sustain and thickness of the tone are amazing. The neck is a bit slimmer than what I'm used to, but it's very comfortable and smooth. And it's a very nice looking guitar. The pictures don't do it justice. I wasn't sure if I'd like the color but it's really grown on me.
I like Tim Mahoney and 311 but I wouldn't call myself a huge fan. This is just a high-quality guitar. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for the classic "PRS" sound without dropping 2 or 3 grand. It's definitely here.
Comments about PRS SE Tim Mahoney Electric Guitar:
Overall I would recommend the entire line to anyone who asks. I customize guitars for
extra money, but these guitars are ready to go right out of the box. The only change you
might want to make would be aesthetic only. There like Cracker Jacks, the prize is already
in the box!
prs could offer more factory parts for se model ie: locking tuners, bridge options etc.
but make no mistake the Tim Mahoney is worth every penney. A color choice or two
would be nice also, but the blue is hot and really pops on that body style. The chrome
hardware finishes off the package. great looking as well as a great player. Glad I made the
purchase. she's a keeper. thanks Paul!
Plays as good as any of my Strats or Les Pauls. and for the money thats saying something.
It may come a little short on tone, if we were to compare, but that can and eventually will
be dealt with. But no hurry. she's got her own groove, and like I said; For the money............
Could always be a little less money, but so could everything else I buy. I had to save
up. (on disability with blood issues) but it makes my days go by smoother, and thats
therapy the prs way. What needs to happen is to fix the economy. So I can get another
prs. Maybe a Dave Navarro this time
Comments about PRS SE Tim Mahoney Electric Guitar:
I personally think there are better guitars out there. This is just plain. Nothing to write home about, no neat features, not amazing to play on, no fantastic sound. Just... plain. I personally think the Schecter C-1 Custom - with its quilted/carved maple top, Seymour Duncan pickups, coil tapping and its ebony fretboard - is leaps and bounds ahead of this guitar and in the same price range. A lot more features can be had for this price.
I guess if you really, really love PRS, this would be a great guitar since it is priced within reach for the average person. However, it's just nothing to write home about...
Decent for a mid-priced guitar, but there are certainly better options out there.
Personal Pros:Comfortable to play. Nice thin neck, but not overly thin... Nice low action from the start. I was even able to lower the low E side a bit more and still have a nice playing action without much if any buzz.
Personal Cons:Wrap around tail piece makes it tough to really dial in your intonation. My A and D strings are slightly flat while all of the other strings are spot on. There are only two screws on the tail piece to adjust, so you just have to hope it all falls into place. Not a huge deal, but can be quite annoying. One volume, One tone knob and a 3-way toggle switch. No coil tapping. Many other guitars in this price range provide coil tapping. So, a loss there.Top is flat and not carved. Which, I expected, but many other guitars in this price range have nice carved tops.Fretboard looks/feels cheap to me. However, it's playable.Plastic trim looks/feels cheap. So do the pickups.Sound is OK. No better or worse than anything else in this price range.Funky blue-ish/white color that looks nothing like it does in the photos! I really liked it at first, but the more I look at it, the less I like it. However, this is obviously just personal preference.
Pretty nice quality. I'd say it's a step above Ephiphone in this price range, but not a huge step.
I've read a lot of reviews that say that they'd pay twice as much for this guitar. I wouldn't. I would pay exactly what it is priced at if not a little less. There is nothing fancy about this guitar. It's very plain. It plays fairly well,
Comments about PRS SE Tim Mahoney Electric Guitar:
For the money, overall, stock this is a great guitar. For more, if you want, you can upgrade this guitar and just have an absolute tone machine for a fraction of a "Real" PRS or American made Gibson or Fender. This would make an excellent guitar for a beginner all the way up to the gigging professional. Even if you are not a fan of 311 or Tim Mahoney, I would recommend this guitar and I would purchase this again if it were lost or stolen.
Let me start off by saying that I own about 15 guitars ranging from Fender custom shop Strats to a Gibson Custom shop Les Paul and SG, to an American made PRS Hollowbody II and this the best sounding and playing guitar I own! I was able to pick one of these up for a low price so I wasn't expecting much. I've had this guitar about 2 months now and I'm really impressed! From the beautiful Blue finish, super comfortably thin and fast playing neck, to the surpisingly great sounding pickups.
Fit and finish was amazing, I didn't see any flaws in the paint job or or the rosewood fretboard.
Guitar stays in tune wonderfully with the stock SE tuners and stock SE nut. None of the tuning issues that I constantly have with all of my Gibson "Custom" shop guitars that cost 10 times as much as this one did. The rosewood fretboard is beautifully done with very nice "Bird" inlays.
Also, the frets are really done well on this guitar as well. The most surprising aspect of this guitar has to be the Pickups. To my ear, these sound better than the Gibson 57 classics that I have in a bunch of my Gibsons as well as my Les Paul loaded with SD '59 and SD JB pickups. I bought this guitar with changing out the pickups in mind but, they sound great as is. Not sure if all SE pickups sound this great or maybe they were tweaked for this model, but I am impressed. Very clean, warm and clear pickups. This guitar sounds great clean, dirty, with tons of gain and everything in between. Volume and Tone controls work great as well with a nice and smooth taper. The neck plays really fast with easy access to all of the 24 frets. Much more comfortable for my hands than Gibson's 60's slim neck. This neck is kind of like a Fender modern profile "C" neck just a tad slimmer with the nut being a tad bit wider.
I was lucky to get a deal on this Model, but I would gladly pay full price if I had to for this guitar.
Great value, tone and playability for a great price! The only thing I changed on this guitar, was I swapped out the speed knobs, switch tip, and pickup rings. This was only cosmetic and a personal preference, as the guitar stock looks great. The only thing missing is coil tapping for the pickups, but this is an easy modification, and a hard shell case. The gig bag is fine if you are just transporting your guitar from house to house, but If you gig you will want to purchase a case. I'm assuming the gig bag was included to keep costs down on this guitar.
Comments about PRS SE Tim Mahoney Electric Guitar:
I bought this not expecting much, but I now see this could easily become my main guitar.
I am blown away by the build quality, solid feel, smooth playing neck and great tones.
I was originally going to save up for an American PRS, but maybe I'll get a few more of these SEs!!
So I bought this guitar not expecting much, it being a Korean build and all.
I've been playing an American Standard Strat with hotrails and have owned many other guitars over the years including some American Made PRSs.
I bought the Tim Mahoney model strictly for the features. I love this type of bridge, scale length, neck and pickup configuration.
I do like some 311 and Tims playing.... just not a huge fan.
So this guitar had all the features I wanted
10+
Ok you have to say "for the price"
For the price I don't think you can find a better built guitar.
Right out of the box all it needed was a little tuning and was good to go.
Feels solid, nice action and great tones.
As good or better than many guitars I have owned that cost twice this much
What more could I ask for?
Not much to say here.
Everyone knows the PRS SE guitars are a bargain.
Comments about PRS SE Tim Mahoney Electric Guitar:
Overall this is a fantastic guitar at an affordable price. If you are looking for a simple, solid, great sounding guitar, look no further. I call it my "workhorse" because it can handle any style and keeps me from having to switch guitars often during a gig.
When it comes to features, this guitar does not have much more than the basic necesities. However, I knew that before my purchase and I really just wanted something simple and solid. The set neck is very smooth and makes for great sustain. Tuners are fine; nothing exceptional but they do the job. Bird inlays are very nice, pickups sound great.
Quality is outstanding. I was hesitant at first knowing that these were not american made; however, Korea's manufacturing capabilities have been rapidly rising and this guitar exemplifies that progress. The paint color is fantastic in person, the pictures really don't do it justice. The neck plays better than anything I have or was looking at purchasing. Overall everything is very solid. Nothing fancy, but solid.
The value of this guitar is incredible. Tone and playability are on the level with guitars twice its cost. The flat top is the only indicator of the cheaper price. It doesn't bother me much though. the sound is there and that is what counts.
