I've lusted for this guitar since I first held one in a Palm Springs music store back in 1977. The shape, the balance, the looks and the history of Rickenbacker guitars had me dreaming of owning one for decades. Then about three years ago I played another one at the Dallas Guitar Show and made up my mind to get one. It still took me awhile, they're not cheap, but I finally own one and I'm thrilled! The feel and playability are unsurpassed and the looks are incredible! I'm the only guy in town that I know of that owns a Rickenbacker and I'm extremely proud of that fact. It now enjoys a place of honor in my music room next to my other guitars. The Rickenbacker era has begun at my house!

First, I believe this to be a well-built guitar with a great sound. However, the one I received had some minor finish defects that made me dissatisfied. For some people, they may not have noticed these defects. However, I'm a craftsman, and it didn't take long for me to see subtle poolings of varnish and a couple of craters from a popped varnish bubble. If I'm going to pay this amount of money for a guitar, I do expect it to be perfect. It's a small surface area to be finished- it shouldn't have any defects. And it's USA made.

I contacted Rickenbacker with detailed photos of this guitar, and someone got back to me quickly with concern and said management would get in touch with me. Well, they never did. Shame on you Rickenbacker, but thank you MF for your return policy.

Ric Quality Control Issues

By Tyler-lTd3L

from New York

Comments about Rickenbacker 620 Electric Guitar:

Pickups on the 620 I purchased were not correctly aligned with the strings. This is not a mounting issue with the pickup placement... The pickup was manufactured with the pole pieces spaced too far apart. Maybe the six string model I received had 12 string model pickups... not sure. Volume output fades for the GB&E strings. Rickenbacker truss rod cover also mounted on a skew so that the bottom does not fit square with the nut.Seem like Ric is going the way of other American Guitar manufacturers and just tossing these things out the door without any oversight

Comments about Rickenbacker 620 Electric Guitar:

Received my Ruby Red 620 three days ago. Shipped double boxed. Only needed to be tuned. Played bass in a band eons ago. Decided to take lessons on a six string and bought a used Ovation Celebrity and new Fender Acoustisonic 90 amp. Progressing to the point, I wanted to buy a "good" American made electric. My instructor recommended a Stratocaster and I tried out several, liking their fast easy necks, but never cared for their looks. Played several Gibson models, LPs being too heavy and SGs (played the bass version), better feel, but not a fan of humbuckers. A friend of mine from my band years who owns many guitars, (including several of each of the models mentioned) and never stopped playing recommended Rickenbacker. Always admired his guitar collection and the Ric's most of all. Read many reviews and decided to take a chance. Glad I did, hard to put down, no make that nearly impossible. Ralphie got his Daisy Red Ryder in Christmas Story, and this Christmas this old kid got his Ruby Red Rickenbacker 620!

    Best Guitar I've Ever Played

    By Brandon-bs8F3

    from Colorado

Comments about Rickenbacker 620 Electric Guitar:

I have owned my JetGlo (black) 620 for about 5 years now. I've played, Fenders, Gibsons, Washburns and also own Gretsch. This guitar is far and away the best guitar I've ever played. Everywhere I take it, I get the wow factor from other guitarists - "whoa, bro, that's a sweet rick!"Action is perfect, stays in tune, sounds amazing, and no other guitar will give you the tonal spectrum as accurately as this guitar. I play through a VOX AC15 and I can play anything except hard metal with that combo. Jazz, country, classic rock, mordern rock, name it and you can get the tone. It's hard to believe they're not more popular. And the finish on this thing is like a dream, and holds up like a tank. My strap came off at a gig recently and it dropped to the floor - not a scratch - but I've heard the semi-hollow's have finish issues. Not this one. It's my baby.

Comments about Rickenbacker 620 Electric Guitar:

I need to put my bias out there first, I love Rickenbackers and I think they are like potato chips, you can't just have one, so this is my third and not my last (eyeing a 650D next). So I have several strats and tele's and they all have that ability to give you great tones, but there is still nothing like the sound of a Rickenbacker. It has the ability to give great clean tones and a wide range of clean tones and that's without using the stereo output, but can also give great overdriven tones as well as bridge the gap of what a strat or a tele can do. Rickenbackers and the 620 is no exception, is not a guitar that you look to shred on, but for that sound that fills out any band mix with a great solid clean or overdriven tone with a little more warmth than any Fender. If you haven't played a Rickenbacker some of this may not make much sense, but if you try one it will all fall into place. They are extremely well made instruments, made in the good old USA. They have a different feel than any Gibson or Fender as I find the neck's are a bit more tapered, but very comfortable. I bought my 620, because I wanted to use a Rickenbacker when playing gigs and didn't want to take the chance of damaging my vintage 360 or having something happen to my fairly rare 260 so the 620 was the logical choice. The only issue I've ever had with Rickenbackers are that they require a little more maintenance than strats or teles and re-stringing is a bit of a pain in the neck, but well worth the hassle. I find that the world is in two camps, those who love Ricks and those who are indifferent, but if you are looking for a great classic tone and something is missing in your guitar arsenal, a 620 in my opinion is a must try and buy instrument, no guitar collection is complete without one. Play one, preferably through a Vox or Fender amp and it will all make sense.

Comments about Rickenbacker 620 Electric Guitar:

Recently purchased this guitar and a Ric 660-12. This guitar is the better of the two.

The fit and finish is very good. Rickenbacker finishes their rosewood fingerboards in lacquer. If you like the feel of a finished figerboard (think maple fingerboard guitars) this will work for you.

Tone is excellent if you can deal with the noisy single-pole pickups. Why can't Rickenbacker shield their guitars? As single pole pickups go, these apprear to have strong output.

The "R" tailpiece makes it harder to restring because you need to load the string from the bottom and hook it in to the slot. Very quirky.

Tuning pegs are first rate Schallars...unlike the more expensive 660-12 which uses inferior Klusons. (go figure) The bridge looks pretty good with the standard adjustable saddles as well as height and tilt adjustment.

The bridge cover comes off easily with two screws. If you want to palm mute, the cover needs to go.

The neck at the nut is a comfortable width. Rickenbacker necks do not get as wide as Gibsons or Fenders as you go up the neck. A little bit less room for string bending. But the strings are a bit closer for those high leads. It's a different feel you should be aware of.

One last thing. A few people mistake this guitar for a shorter scale. It IS a full 24 inch + scale. The guitar looks smaller because the body is shorter than say a Les Paul even though the neck scale is about the same. Again, this Rick has a different feel than the aformentioned. But it is still well balanced and easy to play standing up.

Overall a very nice guitar. Rickenbacker, go fix the 660-12!! (Read my review.)

When I recived the guitar the first thing I noticed was the necks where warped, easy fix no problem. After that came the adjustment of sting height.Everything was going well untill it came to the 14-15-16th frets, there was no way to adjust the strings from stop fretting out.If I went to high I felt a guitar should not need to go almost an inch of the neck to stop the fret buzz.Anyway I am sure there are some 620,s that arrive perfect,I have a 330 I bought in 1997 and still have not touch a thing on it.I still think they are great guitars, but I sent this one back.

I only bought this guitar due to recommendations from people on the ric forum. But I am so glad I did. Wonderful Quality. Perfect set up out of the box .. nice low action. Mine is midnight blue which is just gorgeous. The quality and finish is as good as any of my other guitars which include a 2 Les Pauls and a Custom Shop Strat. It gives the traditional ric tones perhaps with a bit harder edge, but is really versatile. I was just playing mine and was so motivated by its tone I just had to write this review. I play through a Fender Supersonic 112 and a Marshall JVM 410. You wont regret owning this baby trust me !

Comments about Rickenbacker 620 Electric Guitar:

I've played hundreds of guitars and own about 20, and this is still the best guitar I have ever played. Most guitars are just a tool to play with, but I feel like this instrument makes me a better player every time I pick it up. Everything moves smoothly, the execution of what I want to do is always flawless, and it always sounds amazing. I can't rave about this guitar enough. The appearance of this thing is also amazing. Mine is mapleglo - which I highly recommend - and even seasoned guitar player's jaws drop when they see this thing. I've even had other Ric players want to trade me. Hands down, buy this guitar, you won't regret it.

Comments about Rickenbacker 620 Electric Guitar:

The world it seems is divided into Rickenbacker obsessives and "not my cup of tea-ers." There is nothing I can say to a Rick obsessive that they don't already know or can surmise about the 620, but for the "not cup of tea-ers", I say this, you are missing out on a phenomenal guitar by sipping only your own brand of tea. Sure I will admit the 620 has some quirks- such as a truncated lower horn that from a sit-and-play perspective would be better served being a touch bigger, or that the neck width could be a little wider, or that it is a one trick pony in terms of sound. But let me emphasize this, the neck thru body gives you a balanced guitar that no "G" or "F" is capable of. Meaning no neck or body dives, or scenarios where quickly turning your body creates enough thrust to let loose and fly into a speaker cabinet. The 620's light weight body -I find, stays where you want it, in front of you. The Rick's single coils cut cleanly when you want, jangle on command or take some overdrive to create some beautiful throaty growl. Thus the sound of the Rick is not any more a one trick pony than a Strat or a Les. Yes, a little different sounding, but just as diverse in sound possibilities. I will say it is not or will ever be in the modern context a "shred" machine, it was never designed to do that. But as for the neck, the comfortable thickness means that the slightly narrower finger board is not an issue once you spend a little time getting used to it. It is a nice handful and my medium sized hand seem to feel less fatigued after a long bit of playing. From a "shred" perspective the slightly closer string spacing on that neck almost makes me feel like I can pick faster, not needing to cover as much vertical string real estate, so by that token maybe it is a little "shreddy." Finally, the build quality is top notch with a stunning deep Fireglo paint job. Is this the one guitar that rules them all, no but it gives me more options than just a "G" or "F" sound to play with.

Comments about Rickenbacker 620 Electric Guitar:

Very underrated , as many have mentioned for only a few ducats more than the more popular California guitars you can have one of these excellent instruments.
I had a older 330 style a few years back, and while it was a great guitar I find that I'm more of a solid body guy, so when this popped up at a good price (suposedly used..I can't tell) I gladly sold my MIM Strat & Tele, and LP Faded. and bought this bad boy.

Many people think of this a a "pop" guitar, but this can rock as hard as any GIbby and twang like a Fender, and I often play Jazz on it! Sounds great thru my old Maganatone Starlighter, and my Marshall Lead 12..next asigment get the stereo rigged up. :-)
If you are the type that likes something "different" give this a a look, you will be better off with this than 3 or 4 lesser guitars.

                  Signature chimey Rickenbacker sound.
Probably the highest quality standards of any American made quitar.
Only slighty more expensive then a American Strat or Tele.

Comments about Rickenbacker 620 Electric Guitar:

I just purchased the Ricky maple-glo 620 and I am absolutely impressed by the finish, sound and playability. When I first opened the case, it surprised me that the guitar has a smaller thin maple body. This is not a bad thing if you are smaller or don't want a behemoth hanging around your neck all night. The guitar is also very well balanced while hanging from a strap. The neck is fast and with the dual truss rods that Ric uses, I doubt that the neck will move very much. I like the jangly sound from the pickups and the controls allowed me to dial in my sounds with ease. If you want to own a Ricky but are cash-challenged, this is the guitar to buy.

Comments about Rickenbacker 620 Electric Guitar:

Classic Rickenbacker tone with the high gain pickups. I personally never tried the toasters but the high gains do a fabulous job at giving you that tasteful jangle sound. Very impressed. The component quality is top notch. Stay in tune forever. Action is otherworldly. Feels extremely solid and very heavy for its body size. The Mapleglo looks beautiful and doesn't smudge easily like the jetglo does. Best of all it's just slightly more expensive than a lp studio. I'll be looking forward to my next ric in a few years.

I have a 1986 620 T model (first and only owner)- in 86 they made a distinction as to whether the ric-o-sound was an option or not and as to whether the fret board had dots or triangles - the T model has the ric-o-sound (stereo) and triangles on the fret board. The model I have is white laquer with black trim (inverse of the jetglo exact - including black hardware) Not only is the guitar a work of art as an object - everyone who sees it, aside from gapping mouths and comments on how incredibly beautiful it is, wants to buy it! Aside from the physical appearance, this guitar is the finest playing guitar ever - the action is so nice, it almost feels like it's playing itself - like it helps you play. I've never played another guitar that feels like that! I see a lot of comments about this being a great rock guitar, but the set-up on this one gives me the range to play anything - far beyond anything I've ever played - from a full well rounded electro acoustic type of sound to screetching and everything in between. The base notes are full and well rounded and the treble notes are clear and crisp. Best of the Best!

Just received my 620/6 in Fireglo, and all I can say is....WOW!...just beautiful!. Fit and finish are awesome...high gain pickups, although not as "jangley" as vintage toasters, still have the unmistakable "Ric" tone. Fret work and action are perfect. Shaller tuning machines work smoothly. Just a beautiful artistic example of an American made guitar ...I can stare at it all day!

The guitar is just amazing! I play it through a Marshall JCM 2000. Its easy to reach the lower part of the fret board too play all the solos. Also what i like about is that the neck isnt too big so if you have small hands its easier to play.
