You can't beat this package.
This was an impulse buy for me. I'm writing an e-book on how to set up a mandolin and needed another factory mando to use for illustrations and "before and after" examples. As a long-time guitarist I couldn't resist the opportunity to see what kind of guitar and mandolin you could get for a this combined purchase price.

The Rogue mandolin is a real bargain at its normal $40 price at Musicians Friend. If you're willing to spend an hour or two to set it up properly it's easy to play and sounds very nice (hence my e-book). The mando is well-built but as shipped the nut and saddle both need significant (but easy) work to get the action and intonation right.

The guitar came shipped with the action already adjusted very nicely. It sounded nice and bright, except the G string sounded dead. I assumed there was a defect in the guitar, removed all the strings, took the saddle out of the bridge and found a few bad things: there was a small plastic shim under the high E and A strings, which I removed; the bottom of the saddle was uneven, so I sanded it flat, and there was a notch in the top of the saddle where the G string sat, so I sanded that part flat as well.

After putting the strings back on the G string still sounded dead. Out of curiosity I reomved it, loosened the D string and mounted it in the G string spot. It sounded perfect. So I removed all of the strings are re-strung the guitar with fresh D'Addarios, and the guitar sounds great. The rest of the strings sounded OK, but it's easier to change them all at the same time.

The tuning gears are pretty low quality, but they work. The frets are all installed well, intonation is good, a couple of the frets could be dressed better, but this is nitpicking on this level of instrument. This is a great guitar for beginners and intermediates, or for good guitarists who need a traveling/campfire guitar.
The finish is beautiful. Tuning gears are adequate. Strings didn't look or feel like Martins to me, but who knows? The saddle was a little rough, but fixable with sandpaper.
This is an off-the-charts value. It's like buying the guitar and getting a free mandolin!

If you are looking for a way to get a good price and a fair instrument this is a great avenue to consider. The suggested MSRP of[$] is pure marketing and would never pass for the quality generally expected at that MSRP level. The instruments are great for the unbeatable paired price of [$], just do not expect a lot... except for some frequent tuning and intonation issues. String heights and finish were pretty good on both the guitar and the mandolin.

This is a great deal for the price. I was surprised at the quality considering the low cost. The one drawback is that both the guitar and the mandolin require constant tuning.

It a two for one price , so don't expect expensive type quality sound from this guitar , its great for practicing etc, and if you got a quick idea for a song you can just grab it a work with it...The appearance in black enhanced the cheap look , so I have the black, the manufacture has a confusing sticker concerning the removing the invisible covering over the pick guard so beware , and they don't answers phone calls ...The mandolin ? its just there to play around with :-) when I find the time , but it added value to he package , so that is an extra star..

Comments about Rogue Acoustic Guitar and Mandolin Pack:

I'm glad I know how to tune a guitar by ear because it would be very frustrating to constantly tune for a beginner. The mandolin is a bit better with staying in tune, and I'm a beginner on it. I've played guitar for over 20 years and the guitar is only something I'd recommend for a beginner with access to a tuner or to someone that wants to leave a guitar in a place as a second home or visits often - its better than a backpacker guitar and better than no guitar but that's about it.

Comments about Rogue Acoustic Guitar and Mandolin Pack:

the guitar came with the worst strings, replaced with phosper bronze set, adjusted the truss rod as the strings were quite high and neck had a positive bow,the tuners were very sticky and the g string tuner wanted to jump when tuning,i took my string winder and just gave it a bunch of good turns and it freed it up nicely, the guitar plays well now the only problem i have is constant tuning....the mandolin came with im guessing is steel wrapped string's i have only seen them on electric mando's,they sound horrible dull and tinny replaced them with phospur bronze and it comes to life, the intonation had to be set the bridge was not even close, easy to do,adjust the bridge for action and it plays fairly well, the tuners are about the same as the guitar's,,that being said for the pair the cost is under a hundred buck,,a little set up and new strings and they are very playable,i cannot say anything about the sound because i own a rainsong acoustic guitar and a loar handmade mando,so i can not give a fair opinion, because i have not found a guitar or mando that i prefer over them,,i bought these to have fun in the yard playing with family and friend's if they get destroyed i have already got my moneys worth and my nice intruments can be kept that way,,they are good for what they are

Comments about Rogue Acoustic Guitar and Mandolin Pack:

I got this package to add some diversity to my sound. I'm not a tone snob by any means so as to how reliable my review of the Acoustic and Mandolin depends on you.

tone - I have read that the tone of the guitar is flat, cheap, or "what you would expect for the money" tsk, tsk. Whatever. I tuned the guitar and played it out of the box without problems. No rusty strings, very big sound. The dreadnought body design gives a lot of throaty power to each chord. The high end is a little under whelming at times, but I think that is because I typically play an electric with everything amped up. As for the mandolin, I think it is great, sounds great.

body - I'm not a huge guy so the dreadnought is a little hard to reach around for me and play and watch my fingers (bad habit, still do it). I did notice a couple rough frets but those aren't a problem. The mandolin is small. Again, i'm not a huge guy - but i can tell why mandolins are typically played by women. The neck is very narrow and my fingers crowd each other sometimes.

I would say that this set is well worth the money. There was a screw that was missing from the pick guard of the mandolin when i received it but it just fell off in shipping - i found it tied up in the plastic wrap.

Body quality is not bad. Strings are terrible. Broke one while tuning the guitar. Had to retune mandolin 7-8 times before stayed in tune. Has its ups and downs, but over all great value for the price.

Comments about Rogue Acoustic Guitar and Mandolin Pack:

At Christmas my son asked for a guitar from Santa. Being that he's only 4 years old, "Santa" got him a nice youth guitar to start learning on.

A few days after Christmas, he asked if I knew how to play. I said no, but I always wanted to learn. - He walked away with a sigh.

The next night I was online looking for a good beginner guitar for adults. I took down some notes and then called a few musician friends of mine for advice on what to buy. One of them told me to check out Musicians Friend blowout sale, and told me about a couple of the brands to look for in my search.

Needless to say, I got more than I thought I could get! A Guitar and a Mandolin, for the price I thought I would pay for just a guitar? How awesome is that!!

Good deal guys! I'm enjoying both!

The guitar was a gift for someone, the mandolin was for me. Took a very short time to set up mandolin. After setting intonation and tuning, plays like a dream as string height was good as is. Now to get my chubby fingers used to the tight chord positions!! The recipient of the guitar was very pleased!! Would recommend this pack to anyone to keep it yourself or split gift as I did! At that price you can't go wrong!!!!
