Rogue

A great introductory acoustic, priced for anyone to afford.

From Rogue comes this amazing deal in the RA-90 dreadnought acoustic guitar. The Rogue guitar is an ideal instrument for the beginner, or young musician. The body depth and width bring out balanced tone and plenty of projection to be heard from across the room.

This ultra-affordable dreadnought acoustic guitar features a whitewood body, which brings out lots of mid-range punch. The nato neck adds sustain without losing any strength in tone. The rosewood bridge and fretboard add clarity to each note, and a striking look to the front of the guitar. The RA-090's C-shape neck, 1-2/3" nut width, and 16" radius help with intricate fretboard movements when running up and down the 20 frets. The RA-90 also features nickel hardware and covered tuners. This Rogue acoustic guitar will certainly get the job done, at a price that anybody can afford.

Everything about this guitar is cheap and lightweight....except its tone and playability. That's saying a lot for a bottom-of-the-market offering. Some background: ROGUE "Fine Instruments" are a generic housebrand. These guitars generally sell to the entry levelers because they are priced attractively. The instruments are contracted to Chinese (and Korean) manufacturing entities such as Samick and Daewon instrument corporations for design and assembly. This dreadnaught model originates from a China factory, as do so many other name brand instruments. How they can cover costs and profit margins from halfway round the globe for this price is a mystery to me, but nonetheless a bonus for the underfinanced customer.

Regarding this instrument: I have a fairly large collection of stringed instruments and merely bought the RA-090 to use up a soon-to-expire credit coupon. Curiosity about what a low priced guitar would sound and play like drove my purchase more than anything else. It was received double-boxed and in good (new) condition. The strings were slacked about 3-haltones to reduce shipment stress and wrapped in oiled paper. A chromed allen wrench was included for truss rod adjustment. This was not needed as the neck was straight and I detected no fret buzz once tuned to proper pitch. Sight down the neck and note that the brassy fret wires are quite even. There is just a slight hint of edgy-ness to the fret ends, but fine, really.

I measured the body, neck, headstock, and bridge dimensions against my Martin D-28: almost identical. Heck, the bridge, the headstock shape, and the pickguard look almost exactly like Martin's. The Rogue weighs several ounces less though and sports a single full sheet of (birch?) plywood for its top. Probably the same for the back and sides which are concealed by a piano-black coat of laquer paint. The outer finish is polyurethane, glossy but thinner than usual. There are no edge bindings anywhere, no ivoroid heel caps, no sound hole or seam marquetry. There are also no noticeable glue globs, bridge-to-top gaps, or generally nasty finish details to chastise. I rather like the soundhole surround decal - sort of a Greek urn style roping, gold over black to match the finish colors and wires. The tuners are unmarked Schaller-ish clones, but they are decently chromed and held tuning after the strings stretched a bit. The headstock nut is robust and cleanly cut. Nicely polished and rounded edges. The saddle nut is similar material with no discernable compensation chamfers. Surprising accurate intonation when checked at the twelfth (bit of sharpness in the B and high E).

Playing the guitar was a surprise. I expected high action, dull or wooden tone, and bad intonation. Instead I found reasonably low action (could be a smidge lower, but not bad) and a pleasant overall string tone with nice ringing treble notes. The midrange and lower notes are slightly muddy, but benefit from the dreadnaught size. Fingerstyle and picking both work pretty well with it. Hard strumming with a heavy pick might reveal its weaknesses, but I just don't go there. The brassy looking strings have a comfortable softness to them. I think the tone secret with this cheapie lies in its light, light construction. The design eschews the usual additional layer of spruce top veneer and back and side mahogany veneers which tend to damp other entry grade non-solid wood guitars. It has a perfectly reasonable neck shape (probably because it copies Martin's shapes) and string spacing. Dot position markers are traditional but well executed. The fingerboard (if it is rosewood) has been stained like the bridge to resemble black ebony. All the blackings probably hide various flaws in the wood surfaces, but they can't hide bad tone. I won't say this guitar has great tone, but it does have pretty darn GOOD tone. Perhaps as a happy accident of its lightness and cheapness.

If you need a starter product to test the waters with without really committing to guitar investment, this is probably as cheap and good as its gonna get. If you're flying off on a business trip across the States and can't trust the fate of your precious American made flattop, you can ship one of these suckers (now free!) to your destination just ahead of you. It's a weird consumer world we're living in these days. Enjoy the options while they last. And on the other spectrum, save up for and support our American made products when the time is right. A fine Gibson, Martin, or Taylor are worthy investments in their own right and far beyond the tonal reaches of these starter-outers.
Everything you need, but nothing more.
Middling for guitars in general, but pretty darn good for this price point, and the criticism is focused more on the quality of materials rather than how it's put together.
I could have gone with 8 or 10, but only time will tell if it holds up.

I purchased the Rouge C90 acoustic guitar. The guitar has a very full sound for it's size. Right out of the box the action was good. I was dissapointed that there were 2 spots on the guitar that were smudged when it was painted. ( I ordered the black gloss finish.) One spot was next to the sound hole rossette, and the other was to the upper left of the bridge wood mounting. I bought the guitar as a gift for someone so It was embarasing when I opened it up in front of her and we both saw the smudge marks. The sound and ease of play were ok though. I wouldn't order this guitar again. No quality control I guess at the factory.

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I am 67yrs.old and just started playing again after 30+ years. I've owned many guitars including a vintage Yamaha FG75 and a 76 Takamine. Several months ago I purchased an Epiphone DR100 Ebony which I am pleased with after lowering the bridge and adjusting the truss rod. I ordered this guitar because of the price and also I wanted a natural finish guitar. It arrived very quickly and I was immediately pleased with the appearance. I was blown away with the way it played and sounded. I have yet to find one single flaw in this instrmuent. Its the only one I pick up to play every day. Right out of the box ready, nothing needed to be done except tuning which took about a week for the strings to wear in and now it stays in tune. If you want a great guitar at a great price this is it. If you want a great guitar at any price this is it.

I've been buying guitars from M.F. for my mission group in Uganda. This one is a great value for the money. The only caveat is that it's machine made and needs some filing on the frets. Or you'll tear your fingers up! Only spent 1/2 hour though and got a nearly perfect guitar for so little money!

I'm a beginner guitarist and I wanted something that wouldn't break the bank if I didn't stick to it. I play this guitar everyday and I'm learning quickly. I love it! It might be inexpensive but I think it sounds great and it gets the job done. I would recommend this to anybody.

I am absolutely amazed at the quality of this guitar. The finish is flawless and the only issues that I've had are the frets were sharp and after a few days it developed a bad buzz at the second fret on the 1st and 2nd strings but that was taken care of with a quick truss rod adjustment and much to my surprise stays in tune very well with the obviously budget tuners

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I needed a guitar to just have around during the off months while i was away from home. i didnt want to spend much and when i saw this guitar i initially was incredibly skeptical- i was proven wrong

after reading the reviews i decided to take the plunge. the guitar itself looks beautiful and was well packed.

after lowering the action and adjusting the truss rod the guitar became instantly easier to play. its no martin, but it certainly gets the job done in the playability department.

picking and strumming with your hand bring out the guitars sound, playing with a pick is serviceable at best but for the price, you cant really complain.

the strings that come with the guitar are bearable but i imagine once i replace them the guitars true tonality will shine.

the tuning pegs sometimes do not catch the gears when tuning, but this is a minor flaw i have found. i imagine if this problem persists or gets worse it would be an easy fix. but for the price, again i cant complain.

this guitar has exceeded my expectations in every way possible. im very happy with my purchase. if youre looking for a beater guitar to practice or perform with this would get the job done. i look forward to playing with this some more.

I just received the guitar yesterday, and I am really surprised that it plays so well right-out-of-the-box!!
I am extremely impressed how well set up the guitar is. It doesn't sound or look like an inexpensive guitar at all!
The finish was perfect! The action was low without any buzzing - just the way I like it! It is staying in tune! and even the stock strings sound beautiful.

I am very pleased with the purchase, and I would like to thank Musician's friend for this great product.

I highly recommend it to everyone.

This guitar was on sale, had good reviews and a great price. I don't know how they can do that. Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I had a similarly priced guitar that I had had for close to 14 years that got the job done but was by no means anywhere near impressive. Eventually the neck finally gave way and I figured I would take the opportunity to upgrade myself to a nicer guitar; the sale price seemed reasonable.

I did not expect such an improvement in sound from my old cheapo. This is a really good sounding guitar! It doesn't have the depth and clarity and richness of a Breedlove or a Martin, but what do you want for this cheap? I certainly like the sound of it better than my sister's Yamaha or my friend's Epiphone.

The strings that came with it are serviceable, but getting some brighter strings can really bring out the sound of the body a lot more.

I put a Martin 332 thinline pickup in it, and between a quarter turn on the truss rod and a couple strokes sanding down the bridge it plays perfectly and sounds beautiful! Whoever is in charge of Rogue's quality control, I hope they stay there because this is the best cheap guitar I've ever played. A lot of other people have complained about the tuning machines and I have personally not had any trouble with them at all. I haven't had to retune it in 2 weeks now, once the strings settled in.
