OVERVIEW

A worthy starter guitar.

A marvel for its price, the traditional dreadnought design makes for one very playable guitar with a great, full tone. Perfect for strumming or fingerpicking any style of music, it's no wonder this guitar has been so highly rated by our customers. Features a genuine spruce top, die-cast tuning machines, 25-1/2" scale nato neck, and bound rosewood fretboard. It's easy to tune and stays that way. Rich, resonant sound and excellent projection and intonation make this a first guitar to be proud of. It's also great for camping or as a second guitar. Each guitar ships with genuine Martin strings for a quality sound right out of the box.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

I have been playing guitar for 34 years. I have quality expensive guitars. I'm giving this 5 stars, because as an instrument, and at this price, my expectations were not very high at all---and I was pleasantly surprised.
I expected a cheap, flimsy, poorly made "starter" instrument...but this didn't fit that category in my opinion. It is well built...and with new strings and a proper set-up, plays and sounds just as good as more expensive instruments.
I got the Natural guitar, and it is beautiful.
Was looking for an inexpensive guitar that I wouldn't worry about taking in a canoe, camping, and rugged outdoor activities. After removing the "tinny" steel Martin strings, oiling the fretboard, filing sharp edges on the frets, and restringing with quality Phosphor Bronze strings, (string height and neck bow was fine, so no truss rod, bridge, or nut adjustment was necessary on mine), I'm not sure I wanna let this guitar get beat up in the outdoors any more.
It showed up with no visible damage, or missed 'quality control' issues (I don't count the sharp fret edges on the guitar, because at this price they're NOT going to "roll" the edges like Fender, Gibson, Taylor, etc...)
It is the less expensive, less resonant woods used to make this instrument that make it so affordable NOT the construction. Even as an experienced player, I wouldn't be afraid to recommend this to ANYONE looking to play. If you want to get the best out of it be prepared to do a proper set-up, or know someone that can do it for you (if you wanna get the best out of it).

I got a Musicians Friend gift certificate as a Xmas gift from one of my many students (I teach guitar full time)that just about paid for this guitar. What a deal, right? They used to be, but sadly not anymore. Years ago I could recommend this very model to students and they would always be great. Guitar looks great, straight neck, good tuners, and great tone! But their manufacturer can't seem to place the nut accurately in the last two years, making it impossible to tune well. I know this because my students who have bought this very guitar all have the same issue- poor intonation, all because of the same manufacture's defect. The problem is ABSOLUTELY that they place the nut in the wrong position by about 2 mm. I know this because it is impossible to tune this model now with open strings and no capo- the dead giveaway is you can get the chords in one key to sound good, then switch to chords in another key and tuning is just awful- that indicates severe intonation problems. However when you place a capo on any fret on the guitar and then play from there, tuning with my Snark tuner is successful and tuning is PERFECT with all chords in tune in all keys- perfect intonation. After I narrowed down the problem I noticed that the nut on this guitar was placed about 2 mm. to the left too far vs. all my other identical sized, but more expensive and professional, dreadnaught sized guitars in the same scale size. That's it! So I knocked out the nut, routered out 2 mm. from the end of the now exposed fretboard to match the distance between the nut and the first metal fret with my good guitars, re glued the nut into the new position and presto- perfect intonation! Musicians friend is SO close to having a perfect and inexpensive beginner guitar in their lineup- please just call the manufacturer and ask them to recalibrate their CNC routing machines to place that nut correctly- it's a manufacture's defect that would be EASY for them to correct!

Needs A LOT of work

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar I would say is a good starter guitar for a kid to beat on and miss treat.

I normally play the higher end guitars but I gotten this one as a gift over christmas. I figured it is the thought that counts and I should atleast play it to get use to it so when I am asked to play it. It does not sound that bad to the listeners.

First thing is first. The string high or action of the guitar is set up way to high for my liking. I do not like to fight the guitar to play it. But at the same time most starting out guitarist quit because they do not know or cannot adjust the action. I tried everything to get the string hight correct. My last ditch atttempt was taking off the strings and pulling appart the saddle of the bridge out and filing it down by 1/18th of an inch at a time to get corret hight. But here lays another problem. The fret board is made of rose wood. It looked like it was not cared for so I had to go over while my strings are off and re-oil them and polish them off so they look and stayed clean.

I am right now thinking of refretting the guitar because the frets sit pretty high up from the neck which cause a very undelightful buzz sound. I first thought it was my playing but I grabbed my other acoustic guitar and played it and I go no buzz. I took a better look and notice the strings in compairison to the fret board have about .9mm off space when I push on the fret.

For a real serious guitar player this guitar is a work in progress but for the price it is not a bad buy if you got the time to put work into it to make the guitar sound perfect. I do like how the wood gain is almost perfectly stright and solid. But at the same time I would of aged the wood longer to give it better deeps.

If your child or you are wanting to learn guitar I would strongly recomend it for that and that alone. But buy an electric tuner because this thing falls out of tune real easy.

If you are a hardcore guitar player like me. I would say look for a different low end guitar this one needs a lot of work to make it play and sound like a high end.

I would give it 3 out of 5 stars

The guitar is really wonderful: the sound is clear and bright--my son loves at his 10 years old age; the sunbrush color is beatiful!
The service at "Musician's Friend" are very friendly, and the deliver is quick and free.
We 'll come back if we need more music staff.
Thanks for all the nice and quality service the "Musician'sFriend" provided.
At this price it is really wonderful! The sound and the looking can compete with the much more expensive ones in store

    Stunning

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar because i had some money left over after buying my bass. I've had it around three years now so I think I can write a pretty accurate review bout it. First off its very tough, its taken some pretty hard blows over the years and it just has a few minor scratches on it. It can also take the 90-100 degree south carolina weather in the trunk/backseat of a leather car and not be damaged whatsoever. Secondly yeah it may not sound as good as an ovation or talkamine or gibson, but its not THAT far off. I dont know about you guys but I'm happy with a close second best when the price difference is in the thousands. It dosent sound as rich as the others but the tone it has, I like. and besides that this guitar stays in tune amazingly well, I can't remeber a practice session where I have ever had to fine tune it until the next few days or weeks. And about the features, this is an acoustic entry level guitar people, what features would you really expect it to have? Now for the downside stuffs, after three years the only real complaints I have is that the bridge is cracking and so is the nut/saddle. But not at a fast enuff rate, I expect another 3 years out of this guitar before I have them both replace, which I will because this guitar is absolutely worth it.

Several years and 7 RA-100D guitars still going strong

    By Louis Alexander

    from Florida/Georgia

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Several years ago I ordered a package deal that included an RA-100D acoustic guitar and a mandolin. My first impression of the guitar remains to this date - - outstanding! I have since purchased 6 (or maybe more) more guitars and a couple more mandolins. All of these instruments are currently in use by my grandchildren and a couple of friends. I personally still have two RA-100D guitars that I play almost every day. I have a D-18 Martin and a Sigma D28 and the RA-100D guitars are my choice when playing in a group during a jam session. The setup on the guitars upon arrival are good and I have never had a failure of any components. I have had several of the guitars checked by an expert luthier (Gainesville, Florida) and hardly any adjustments were made. I prefer to play Elixir light/medium strings and this adds more ease to the playability of the guitar. The quality of the sound is comparable to my Martin D-18. The utility of the cost and quality of this guitar make it a perfect instrument for beginners and experienced guitarist.
About the mandolins - - they are a typical laminated top mandolin, but the sound is surprising from such an inexpensive instrument. Similar to the guitars, the need for setup is minimal upon arrival. I have both the A Model and F Model mandolins and all are still in use and performing well. All of these instruments are well made and, if properly maintained, will last many years. (Note: I have been playing fiddles, guitars and mandolins since 1949.)

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

When I say we love this guitar, I mean my daughter (whom the guitar was for), my daughter's guitar teacher, and myself. The guitar itself (we bought black) is beautiful and looks like a much more expensive guitars. The tone and sound quality was excellent, even right out of the box. It took about 2 minutes to tune it. The price is unbeatable. I bought her first guitar at a kid's music store and it was 5 dollars more expensive and not even a quarter of the quality. My kiddo absolutely loves his guitar and even in the beginning stages of learning what a beautiful sound it makes when they hit the notes right. Best deal out there.

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I've had this guitar for about four years now, so it is time to do a review on this seasoned veteran, who has seen countless hours of play time at my hands.

Intonation is good, but not great. I hardly notice any issues most of the time.
Finish has minor blemishes that don't bother me for the price. I have the black model and the paint is a bit blotchy, but hardly noticeable.
Sounds very good for an eighty buck instrument, and the tone has improved over time. Nice, rustic sound - somewhere in-between warm and bright. Honestly, it sounds like it is made of cedar rather than spruce, or at least mine does.
Tuners are okay. Stay in tune fairly well.
Bridge saddle, bridge pins, and nut are of the same, cheap plastic that the binding is made of. It is kind of flaky, but has held up so far.
Neck is glossy and not as fast as a satin neck.
Rosette looks nice for a decal.

Bottom line - it sounds good and plays well. I have received compliments, saying that it sounds/feels like a guitar costing several hundred more. This is coming from two different players, one a virtuoso, both who used to be professional musicians and have played for 25+ years. My friend who has been playing about as long as I have (10 years) brings his Fender acoustic to my house, but I always end up stuck with the Fender because he won't put my Rogue down! :)

When I bought this, I had planned on replacing this a year or two after I got it with a higher end instrument, but it is still my first and only acoustic guitar. Buy it.

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I guess you could call me a "professional musician" as I get paid to play some small venues, but I enjoy just hanging around a campfire and jamming with friends.
I bought this guitar 3 years ago with the mandolin. I wanted to get into the mandolin field and figured why not get a guitar with it for a few extra bucks? I was blown away by it.
After 3 years of heavy use as a campfire bandit it is still as awesome as it was when I first played it. It still stays in tune and it can take a beating. I have dropped it a few times (alcohol may have been involved) and it has gained a few battle scars, but nothing serious enough to need to have repairs done or replace it.
If you are looking for a nice guitar for dirt cheap, get this one.
When it comes to tone and sound, most of that is on you. You could have a $5,000 guitar and a $10,000 set up and it could still sound like doo-doo if you don't have a strong sense of the guitar. You need to build your own sound/tone. I can play any guitar and still have my personal sound so why spend a bunch of money on a guitar when this one works just as well.

I've been playing the guitar since 1963..And I have owned tons of them acoustic & electric...I wanted a beater guitar to keep in my trunk or in my locker at work to play at lunch...(A cheapy I won't cry over when broken or Stoll)My favorite to play is my 1970 Sigma Martin,Let me tell ya guys! I strung them both (My Martin and this Rogue-100D) With some Martin 80/20 medium bronze strings...I played them back and forth in the dark one night...And I swear I can't tell the difference...This is one great deal...I can afford one for my car trunk! And? One for my locker...Buy this baby!!!

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I love the feel of this guitar. I am just learning to play guitar, but have been playing the bass for years and have been around a lot of guitars and guitar players. I have played Martins, Taylors, and Guilds, not to mention other less expensive guitars. In my humble, non expert opinion, this sounds almost as well as any of the name brand guitars, and way better than any of the cheaper ones I have played. For the price, I couldn't be happier.

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I am not an experienced guitar player (only been seriously playing for about 3 weeks) so I had no idea what I needed to look for in a guitar, but having read the many reviews for the Rogue RA 100D I felt confident that this would be a good guitar to start with, and I have not been disappointed. As many others here have reported the action is on the high end so I did end up pulling and sanding about 1/8 inch off of the saddle, but now it isn't too bad, and with the aid of youtube I have already learned "Sweet Home Alabama", "Hey There Delilah", "And Oh Holy Night", among others. Now if I could just get my chord transitions to smooth out.

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

all guitars need a little tlc even out of the factory. overall mine arrived in great condition. most guitars come with bridge saddle, nut, and truss rod issues, some more out of whack than others. even during regular maintenance these issues are to be addressed. you'd be really lucky to get any guitar to play like you want it to and stay that way through weather changes. it's the nature of the beast. a lot of guitars come with nut slots cut not deep enough or at weird angles, and bridge saddles too tall, which makes intonation impossible. get those two items jiving together and you would sound in tune on a piece of toast. i've owned and played this one for a few years now, it's well built and getting better in tone as it ages.my nut slots filed angled back from the fretboard and as low as possible to not get buzz on open strings. truss rod tight enough for slight relief, and brige saddle lowered to accommodate easy fretting.the plastic nut broke,as they all do, was replaced with a tusque and it's easier than bone to file to your specifications. it's a fine guitar

This guitar is great and totally worth it I love this guitar! The only downer is that you have to buy the case seperate, so its hard to make sure it fits! All in all this guitar is great for whether your just starting, or already experienced. This product sounds and looks beautiful, and was worth every penny! I love this guitar!(:

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Great value guitar for beginning-intermediate players, and for experts this is the perfect guitar to take boating, camping, or on road trips. Leave it at your summer home. Whatever. It's a great guitar to have around without worrying about it.
Tuners are fine, adjust nicely, hold pitch well. Strings are Martin strings, feel like medium gauge bronze wound. Finish (mine is black) is very nice.
I loosened all the strings and removed the end pins and lifted the strings out, leaving them wound on the tuning pegs. Then I (gently, with a good pair of pliers) pulled the white saddle from the bridge. The saddle bottom had a slight curve to it, so I sanded it (light grit sandpaper on a FLAT surface) a little, put it back in, put the strings back on and it sounds very nice.

Everything esle seemed pretty well set up. The nut height was very good out of the box, and the bridge was just a little ligh. When I sanded the bridgedown (see above) I was careful to get the height where I wanted it. Good action now!
Incredible value. I've been playing guitar for forty years and this will be my campfire guitar. Now when someone reaches for my guitar to play a tune they remember from taking lessons a loooong time ago, I won't have to cringe!

Great sound... very impressive quality for such an inexpensive guitar. Shipping was very fast and item was well packed.
Guitar strings were not good quality, but a quick change was all that was needed to make this a great guitar.

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I am 51, a professional musician all of my life. I have many guitars and really just wanted to add one that looked a little different and was black. I got way more than I expected for the low cost!!! The guitar is beautiful, well made, stays in tune, and surprisingly has a rich sound which I totally did not expect. I would say Rogue has outdone itself with this low cost line. I would recommend it to anyone for ANY reason! Does not belong in the category of a "cheap guitar." LOVE IT

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

For the price you get exactly what you would expect. I don't think I would pay full retail for this but it seems like it goes on sale often and then it is totally worth the price.
The construction is on par with other guitars made in china but expect the action to be pretty high. You could easily spend as much on a set up for this guitar as you did on the guitar. Since it is so inexpensive though it makes a great learning tool to set up yourself. All you need is some sandpaper and a flat surface and you can make this guitar play wonderfully. Youtube will show you all you need to know.

I have purchased several of these guitars within the last 10 years and every one of them is still in excellent condition and in use at home, at schools, and in recording studio. Very easy guitar to keep in very good condition. I also own a D 18 Martin (1973) and the RA 100 D resembles the sound and performance very closely.
