Rogue

A worthy starter guitar.

A marvel for its price, the traditional dreadnought design makes for one very playable guitar with a great, full tone. Perfect for strumming or fingerpicking any style of music, it's no wonder this guitar has been so highly rated by our customers. Features a genuine spruce top, die-cast tuning machines, 25-1/2" scale nato neck, and bound rosewood fretboard. It's easy to tune and stays that way. Rich, resonant sound and excellent projection and intonation make this a first guitar to be proud of. It's also great for camping or as a second guitar. Each guitar ships with genuine Martin strings for a quality sound right out of the box.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

I've had this guitar for about four years now, so it is time to do a review on this seasoned veteran, who has seen countless hours of play time at my hands.

Intonation is good, but not great. I hardly notice any issues most of the time.
Finish has minor blemishes that don't bother me for the price. I have the black model and the paint is a bit blotchy, but hardly noticeable.
Sounds very good for an eighty buck instrument, and the tone has improved over time. Nice, rustic sound - somewhere in-between warm and bright. Honestly, it sounds like it is made of cedar rather than spruce, or at least mine does.
Tuners are okay. Stay in tune fairly well.
Bridge saddle, bridge pins, and nut are of the same, cheap plastic that the binding is made of. It is kind of flaky, but has held up so far.
Neck is glossy and not as fast as a satin neck.
Rosette looks nice for a decal.

Bottom line - it sounds good and plays well. I have received compliments, saying that it sounds/feels like a guitar costing several hundred more. This is coming from two different players, one a virtuoso, both who used to be professional musicians and have played for 25+ years. My friend who has been playing about as long as I have (10 years) brings his Fender acoustic to my house, but I always end up stuck with the Fender because he won't put my Rogue down! :)

When I bought this, I had planned on replacing this a year or two after I got it with a higher end instrument, but it is still my first and only acoustic guitar. Buy it.

This guitar I would say is a good starter guitar for a kid to beat on and miss treat.

I normally play the higher end guitars but I gotten this one as a gift over christmas. I figured it is the thought that counts and I should atleast play it to get use to it so when I am asked to play it. It does not sound that bad to the listeners.

First thing is first. The string high or action of the guitar is set up way to high for my liking. I do not like to fight the guitar to play it. But at the same time most starting out guitarist quit because they do not know or cannot adjust the action. I tried everything to get the string hight correct. My last ditch atttempt was taking off the strings and pulling appart the saddle of the bridge out and filing it down by 1/18th of an inch at a time to get corret hight. But here lays another problem. The fret board is made of rose wood. It looked like it was not cared for so I had to go over while my strings are off and re-oil them and polish them off so they look and stayed clean.

I am right now thinking of refretting the guitar because the frets sit pretty high up from the neck which cause a very undelightful buzz sound. I first thought it was my playing but I grabbed my other acoustic guitar and played it and I go no buzz. I took a better look and notice the strings in compairison to the fret board have about .9mm off space when I push on the fret.

For a real serious guitar player this guitar is a work in progress but for the price it is not a bad buy if you got the time to put work into it to make the guitar sound perfect. I do like how the wood gain is almost perfectly stright and solid. But at the same time I would of aged the wood longer to give it better deeps.

If your child or you are wanting to learn guitar I would strongly recomend it for that and that alone. But buy an electric tuner because this thing falls out of tune real easy.

If you are a hardcore guitar player like me. I would say look for a different low end guitar this one needs a lot of work to make it play and sound like a high end.

I would give it 3 out of 5 stars

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

First, let me start off by saying that I purchased this guitar as a donation for a non-profit company, in order to further their cause. I also bought this guitar based on the many positive reviews. Like many, I was looking for a good beginner guitar that was relatively well-constructed for the price. I had to try it out before donating it to the company. I took it out of the packaging and was impressed initially by the overall looks of the guitar (I bought the sunburst model). Now it was time for the real test, playability. I formed and strummed several chords moving up the neck for about 20 minutes or so. The instrument had a real nice tone and was easy to play, and stayed in tune while playing and then it happened ... the guitar "bit" me. A sliver of wood peeled off from the back of the fretboard and lodged into my palm. I thought maybe this was a fluke occurrence, I was wrong it happened again. Is this the kind of quality one can expect from a major guitar retailer? Perhaps if you spray the back of the fretboard with thin coat of clear lacquer it would fix the problem. But, given what I went through, I simply cannot recommend this instrument.

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar for a trip to Chile from the USA. I intend to leave it there when I come home. I figured if it was damaged while I travel, it's not a big loss. The top of this guitar has beautiful grain, and looks like the top of my old Gibson accoustic. But It's obviously plywood. The finish of the bridge, back and sides was really poor. I wasn't expecting much for the price, but you can tell they put this together in a hurry. The nut was just glued on and not adjusted. Same with the bridge saddle. This guitar must have been sitting around in storage for a long time because the strings were horribly corroded as were the frets. I adjusted the truss rod, took off the strings, used a fret rocker to locate high frets, and fixed those. Afterwards, I polished all frets to get them in better shape. Had to oil the fretboard as it was bone dry. Fret edges are a Little Sharp as often happens in the dry Winter. I adjusted the nut and saddle, put on new strings, and it plays well. It has a surprisingly good sound for such a cheap guitar. It will suite my needs perfectly. I would only recommend this guitar if you know someone who can do a setup cheap or free. Otherwise, it's not worth the cost.

I bought this as a third guitar to use for camping at the lake. We camp quite a bit in spring and summer, but I'm not carrying my Martin D-45 or old Epiphone to a campsite in the humidity and hot. So I was looking for an inexpensive guitar to tag along. Found this one on Cyber Monday - very inexpensive. Got it and it's worth it. Stays in tune okay, has a decent sound. Did have to lower bridge saddle about .075" to get lower action I like. Doesn't have the sound of a Martin but I didn't expect it to, but it sounds pretty good - better than I expected. Quick FYI - was also looking for a gig bag and they were like ~$20-25. But Musician's Friend had their hardshell case for ~$41 with free shipping. No brainer there. So for ~$100, got a guitar and good case can take to the lake.
