OVERVIEW

A worthy starter guitar.

A marvel for its price, the traditional dreadnought design makes for one very playable guitar with a great, full tone. Perfect for strumming or fingerpicking any style of music, it's no wonder this guitar has been so highly rated by our customers. Features a genuine spruce top, die-cast tuning machines, 25-1/2" scale nato neck, and bound rosewood fretboard. It's easy to tune and stays that way. Rich, resonant sound and excellent projection and intonation make this a first guitar to be proud of. It's also great for camping or as a second guitar. Each guitar ships with genuine Martin strings for a quality sound right out of the box.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

I have been playing guitar for 34 years. I have quality expensive guitars. I'm giving this 5 stars, because as an instrument, and at this price, my expectations were not very high at all---and I was pleasantly surprised.
I expected a cheap, flimsy, poorly made "starter" instrument...but this didn't fit that category in my opinion. It is well built...and with new strings and a proper set-up, plays and sounds just as good as more expensive instruments.
I got the Natural guitar, and it is beautiful.
Was looking for an inexpensive guitar that I wouldn't worry about taking in a canoe, camping, and rugged outdoor activities. After removing the "tinny" steel Martin strings, oiling the fretboard, filing sharp edges on the frets, and restringing with quality Phosphor Bronze strings, (string height and neck bow was fine, so no truss rod, bridge, or nut adjustment was necessary on mine), I'm not sure I wanna let this guitar get beat up in the outdoors any more.
It showed up with no visible damage, or missed 'quality control' issues (I don't count the sharp fret edges on the guitar, because at this price they're NOT going to "roll" the edges like Fender, Gibson, Taylor, etc...)
It is the less expensive, less resonant woods used to make this instrument that make it so affordable NOT the construction. Even as an experienced player, I wouldn't be afraid to recommend this to ANYONE looking to play. If you want to get the best out of it be prepared to do a proper set-up, or know someone that can do it for you (if you wanna get the best out of it).

I got a Musicians Friend gift certificate as a Xmas gift from one of my many students (I teach guitar full time)that just about paid for this guitar. What a deal, right? They used to be, but sadly not anymore. Years ago I could recommend this very model to students and they would always be great. Guitar looks great, straight neck, good tuners, and great tone! But their manufacturer can't seem to place the nut accurately in the last two years, making it impossible to tune well. I know this because my students who have bought this very guitar all have the same issue- poor intonation, all because of the same manufacture's defect. The problem is ABSOLUTELY that they place the nut in the wrong position by about 2 mm. I know this because it is impossible to tune this model now with open strings and no capo- the dead giveaway is you can get the chords in one key to sound good, then switch to chords in another key and tuning is just awful- that indicates severe intonation problems. However when you place a capo on any fret on the guitar and then play from there, tuning with my Snark tuner is successful and tuning is PERFECT with all chords in tune in all keys- perfect intonation. After I narrowed down the problem I noticed that the nut on this guitar was placed about 2 mm. to the left too far vs. all my other identical sized, but more expensive and professional, dreadnaught sized guitars in the same scale size. That's it! So I knocked out the nut, routered out 2 mm. from the end of the now exposed fretboard to match the distance between the nut and the first metal fret with my good guitars, re glued the nut into the new position and presto- perfect intonation! Musicians friend is SO close to having a perfect and inexpensive beginner guitar in their lineup- please just call the manufacturer and ask them to recalibrate their CNC routing machines to place that nut correctly- it's a manufacture's defect that would be EASY for them to correct!

Good starter guitar, but I returned 2 of 3 guitars because of nicks and dents. I kept the last one because it only had a few minor ones.

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Musician's Friend gets 5 stars for fast shipping and customer service. I purchased this guitar because I own a Rogue RD-80 that I played and purchased from GC. That instrument was a surprising good guitar for what it was and I would recommend it. To make the RD-80 playable for a goof around guitar a setup was certainly needed. I removed the strings immediately, took 0000 steel wool to the fretboard and frets to remove the horrible overspray on them. Lemon oiled the fretboard. Removed some of the gloss on the back of the neck and lemon oiled it. I further polished and leveled a couple of high frets. I then sanded the extremely cheap plastic saddle and adjusted the truss rod for the proper neck relief. Strung up with Elixir Nanoweb lights. It sounds and plays great.

Based on this and the positive reviews I thought I try this with the RA100D. It's supposed to be the better model. Well even after putting in a bunch of time to set the guitar up it was just not worth it. Over half the frets had issues with buzzing and needed attention. The sound was that of a very cheap dreadnought made of plywood. I know that's what it's supposed to sound like. Well the RD-80 sounds close to a Yamaha FG700 or some other cheap spruce top/laminate guitar. The nut width is not as large as the RD-80. I could not get the intonation to be acceptable on this guitar. I changed the saddle to a compensated saddle with little improvement.

The lesson learned is that when buying cheap guitars like this you're playing with fire. Sure there are the occasional good sounding ones that play well. However, you can find the Yamaha FG series for a little more and get an infinitely better instrument. Because I modded mine rather than return it I smashed it and tossed it in the dumpster. Life's too short to mess with junk and that's what this one was despite my efforts to set it up correctly. The cheap sound alone makes this guitar unworthy of all the praise.

I bought this guitar for my daughter and she never even got a chance to play it before the piece of junk broke. We bought it at the end of April and middle of July and its broke. I took it back to see if they could do something with it or if there was some kind of warranty but of course no. I wouldn't recommend this poorly constructed piece of junk even at the cheap price it is totally not worth the money.
