I bought this guitar for my wife for her birthday, and she loves it! I have played guitar for 15 years now, and she has always expressed interest in playing, and from time to time picks my guitar up (which is another model by Rogue) and plucks and chords around. However, being slightly smaller framed than I am, she has to stretch out a bit to get to the first few frets.
With this guitar, which is only slightly smaller than my full size, fits her great. It's comfortable for her, made with great quality and care, and best of all it doesn't look like a toy. I am also a full size man, and it is comfortable for me to play to. I'd recommend this to almost any slightly smaller size framed person in a heartbeat. It plays well, comfortable action, and incredible sound quality!

been waiting for something bad to happen

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this expecting something that I would have to work on to, maybe, make it playable. All I wanted was something that could set out and be played by grandkids or non-players, something that would keep my "good stuff" out of the hands of those too young or too inexperienced to handle carefully. Whether I just got lucky, or this guitar is indicative of overall build quality I can't say; but, I got one darn nice sounding, easy to play guitar. Vastly exceeded my expectations. Has been setting out for weeks now and I have hours of playing time on it and I'm still waiting for something bad to happen, something to fix...I don't even have a complaint about tuning--holds as well as my much more expensive guitars. All that being said it's not a Martin or a Taylor, nothing like that kind of tone. However, it adds an interesting texture when played along with those high-ends. I'll live with the scuffs in return for an inexpensive knock around that I did not have to work on or set up, that others can pick up and ding without giving me a coronary, and that sounds and plays good enough for me to keep its older brothers in their cases when that sudden urge to play hits me.
A basic, no nonsense slightly smaller knock around guitar.
There were cosmetic issues: some scuffs from packaging and a couple in the factory finish. But the neck was straight, the set up was good out-of-the-box, it took and held a tune and, overall, it sounded better than expected.
For the price (stupid deal of the day), great bang for the buck.

A good starter guitar for young beginners

By Old Pal

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

Over the last year and a half I purchased a Rogue Starter, a Dean Playmate and a Luna Aurora Petite for family members starting out on the guitar. Of the three, the Rogue is clearly the best. Overall quality for such a cheap guitar is good with the biggest negative being the tuning keys. Bottom line, you get more than you pay for with this inexpensive guitar.

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

I tuned it up and found it to be just OK, with very corroded strings, a cheap set of sticky tuners, and very cheap plastic saddle and string nut. Since I'm skilled at instrument set-up, these were all changed out immediately. I installed a Tusq nut, and a nice bone bridge saddle to the proper height for me, and a new set of Custom-Light Martin SP's - - now this thing really came to life. Amazing tone and sustain (due in part to the new nut and saddle), and the intonation up and down the neck seems perfect. This little guitar is a total joy to play, and it has that sought-after pre-1940's blues tone to die for. Like one of the old Stella 3/4-sized in tone, but this thing is actually X-braced and built right so it should last for years! The big brass frets are a plus, and the neck is comfortable and plays like butter. Finish is flawless, and the body is in a nice Walnut stain with black binding (not painted). The bridge is pinless, and is actually bolted-on black painted wood (not plastic as some have stated). It stays in tune pretty well, and I am totally impressed with this little guy as a guitar to keep propped up in the corner to play when the inspiration hits me. I have several high-quality guitars (Yairi, Blue Ridge, Gibson, etc.) and have been playing for 50+ years professional, so I know guitars. I find myself picking up this little Rogue more than my others now, so "Beginner" guitar is a bit misleading on this one. I would surely recommend this to anyone who needs a good 12-fret small guitar for studio work or just knocking around the house. I've had it in a few jam sessions and everyone is blown away by the sound and how well it plays. I am planning on using it in the studio soon, and expect it's remarkable sustain to be a major plus on leads. Nothing to be ashamed of here, but be aware that these will need some major set-up before they are made easily playable, as with any guitar. And, at this price point - - what do you expect? Bottom line, a well-built little guitar suitable for just about anyone, including seasoned players and pros. Good job, Rogue!!! I may have to pick up the red one sometime down the road. Maybe I just got lucky and got a good one, but again for the money it just can't be beat anywhere.
Nicely-built all around, scalloped braces, traditional X-braced top, clean workmanship inside (but strong glue smell initially), perfect gloss Poly finish to body and neck. Fairly wide brass frets, fully bound body, no fingerboard markers (but does have side dots) even has an adjustable tension rod for neck relief that works perfectly, access at headstock. Painted wooden bridge (pinless-type, bolted and glued on) and painted black wood fingerboard. 12-fret neck/body joint. Big soundhole marquetry inlay design, and a simple black celluloid pickguard. Plywood top, back and sides (Birch?) of nice quality and graining, with a very nice brown (Walnut) stain. Quite attractive!
Seems to be built like a tank, to decent quality standards. Tuning machines (Individual open-type) were hard to turn, sticky junk, as was the plastic nut, saddle & end pin (pretty cheap, indicitive of a beginner's guitar) and the interior lining strips were just just that (thin strip of plywood instead of the usual heftier segmented lining, but they should hold up OK) - - thus the 8 in Quality here.
After some serious set-up and tweaking, this is simply an awesome little guitar suitable for jam sessions or even recording purposes. It is well-suited for blues and folk, and has that small-bodied sound of the 30's and 40's made popular by the smaller "Stella"-style 3/4-sized instrument. Great for finger-picking and also for lead. Just a fantastic player, and sounds really, really good for plywood, and for $$- - - just an incredible value. This thing is basically built as good or better than guitars of other more well-known brands at 10X the price!!

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

Since 1984, I've been a singer / songwriter and multi instrumentalist, and I record my original songs. As an indie artist, I also sell my music commercially to companies.

Here is my breakdown on this guitar:

1) I bought the natural color matte version of the acoustic guitar. I had to only slightly make a very slight adjustment to the neck truss rod (yes, it "does" have one) and the saddle on the bridge and its a really nice "parlor" sized guitar to play.
2) This guitar uses a "classical" style bridge with "extra light" gauge strings "remember that" ! Do not use heavier gauge strings on this guitar. Also note, that this guitar because of the parlor sized shape, classical bridge and cheaper wood (feels like pine, all around) The guitar is going to have a more bright sound to it, "plus" more sustain in regards to the strings, as again.. it is using a classic bridge.
3) This guitar is "awesome" in regards to finger picking, and it records well over the air. Recording finger picking on my original songs sounds awesome.

Look for the following:
1) The natural matte finish that I went with, may be better than the others because.. remember.. the front of the guitar.. the top wood "vibrates", painted or heavy varnished woods vibrate less.
2) Check the neck and frets! Also the bridge most likey will need to be lowered as well. if you don't know what to look for, ask a seasoned guitar player or pony up a little bit of money and get the guitar setup by a music shop. If there is any defects, return it to M.F. right away.
3) Also note, that the sound hole is small.. while I use a great USB studio microphone to record this guitar over the air, my standard sound hole magnetic pickups do not fit. Sometimes I'll use a peizo stick on pickup made by Dean Markley (M.F. sells them here). I may permanently attach it at some point.
4) Another thing, is the tuners are "open backed" style, If your strings are not staying in tune after a month, "slightly" tighten those philips head screw

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

I was skeptical but I wanted something I could leave leaning in my daughter's room and not worry about. What a shocker this purchase turned out to be...this guitar is much better than I ever expected. The build is OK...there's some problems on the inside with excess glue and splinters, but it looks solid. The exterior is pretty nice, except for a small blemish on the bridge, and the fact that they put the strap button off center...by a lot.The strengths of this guitar lie in it's playability and tone. I really am impressed with this thing. What can I say...it's a cheap guitar that sounds good. Your mileage may vary...as QC in China is known to do the same.

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

Got my order quickly and on time. packaged well. Beautiful lacquered finish soundhole decor is nice, no blemishes at all. Tuned up well, very decent strings, Holds it's tune very well. The tone is a little bit on the treble-y, tinny side, but very clear and resonate. Intonation is fine. Plays easily, not hard to fret at all. My only major "complaint" is the frets were not filed down well at all. In fact, I keep having to pull fibers off of the ends of the frets where my (microfiber) shirt keeps getting caught in them. But I suppose I can file them down myself. The other "flaw" I've found right off is the tuning machines were not aligned very well (not stright in their placement, some are turned at almost 10 degrees or so) on the headstock. Though this will not affect playability, it does show they were perhaps applied in a haphazard manner. All it would've taken is applying a straight edge or ruler to the headstock while placng them. Very poor, and so easy to have been done correctly. The treble-y sound does add dimension/ alternative sound to the collection of guitars I have, just from an "interest" point of view. This would be a great starter guitar or for camping or kids' guitar because of the low low price, but not a very fulfilling "rich sound" experience. Again, I'd highly recommend as a good starter.

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

Pay for the next Rogue up and right now it is the same price and the one above it is a dreadnaught and it survived a tour in Iraq and is now used in a church in Uganda. Awesome piece of art.
It's that, a starter guitar. Like the other raters said, some got good action some don't. I ordered two, one had good action, the other did not. I now see cracks in the back finish giving the impression it is not solid wood or plywood even, it is particle board and veary easy to break. Both guitars have chunks broken out of the back of the guitars and hardly even used. I put them in my classroom and my students are rough on them, but one looks like it was kicked, but I didn't see it. The back of the guitar is fragile and proven when a chip broke off the back of the second guitar with just playing for five minutes. The students are afraid to play them because they fear getting blamed for the crumbling backs.
CHeap is cheap and these are cheap. I had a Rogue guitar free with guitar strings and thought these were like that one, but not so.
High action and fragile wood.

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

Rogue is the new Stella! Back in the 1920's and 1930's, the old birch-bodied Stella guitars were the main staple of the hobo bluesmen of the Mississippi Delta. The Rogue Starter Acoustic is its contemporary cousin! Althouth made in China, it has a remarkable sound for being an inexpensive instrument. The action is high enough for bottleneck work, but not so high as to make finger-style uncomfortable. And it even comes with Martin strings! This is a great campfire guitar, and will be at home in any hobo jungle or juke joint. For the musician that can't afford a Taylor or a Martin, grab a Rogue and never look back! You'll be glad you did.

I bought 2 of these for my daughters ages 6 and 5.(pink of course) I have played my fair share of budget guitars and high end guitars and I do all of my own set ups, restrings, repair work etc... . Keep in mind this guitar is designed and intended for BEGINNERS. This being said it plays well right out of the box. I set it up, lowered the action and restrung it with REAL Martin strings (10-47 to be exact) and it sounds and plays great. I even found myself playing it for 30 minutes or so. Is it expensive guitar great, no, but it does the job to get you or your child started and excited about playing. If you or your child loses interest, well, you are not out a lot of money. You will not be disappointed.

I find myself playing it more than any of my 6 very expensive guitars. I thought this was for young novices, but this is a full-blown professional quality guitar to be used by Anyone for any venue.

Excellent beginner guitar for the price. Very playable, solid construction. Great value for a younger player who may or may not lose interest. My daughter is 12 she loves it. I play it too and the only thing I dont like is the action. It is a bit high. I may try to adjust it next time I restring it. I did change out the steel strings for nylon, easier on my daughters fingers. All in all, a great value, I am very happy with it.

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

I can recommend tis giuitar without hesitation. Fit, finish, neck action, tuners,...eveything is spot-on. I had one of these in Blue some years back, in which I had installed pickup , that I sold (it was the color that I did not care for), but always missed it...I held my breath on this one , hoping it would prove as great a player as the blue one was...it is, and this one is! Its the Walnut color. It gets a pickup installed tonight!
I love picking Delta Blues on a smaller acoustic (I've had Martins, Blueridge, Yamaha and Breedlove small bodies), and this guy fills the bill! Its about a 000 in size..only slightly smaller than a dreadnaught.
Finish is flawless (I personally don't care for polyurethane finishes). Basic as they come. Bridge is a "string pass-through" type rather than using pins. Bound top and back with black. Has plastic tail strap pin, no neck heel pin. Open back tuners operate smaoth. Plastic knobs look good with this guitar.
This is only slightly smaller than a "standard sized" guitar.
Even for much more money, I could not fault this guitar. No defects of any sort can be found.
A much nicer playing/sounding guitar than many I have spent more money for in the past.

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

I purchased this as a campfire, take it with me on a whim someplace type of guitar. I had purchased the Rogue full size RA-090 for a family member and that guitar is a fantastic value for quality and sound. So, my hopes were high for the Rogue Starter.

Here are my pros and cons. Pros: The finish looks great. It's light and fits the bill as a a campfire take with you type of guitar.

The cons. The sound quality when strumming and playing sounds muffled and the further down you play on the neck, the notes are either too sharp or too flat. There's no consistency. I changed the stock strings to some D'Adarrio's hoping it would improve the sound quality and I didn't pick up on any noticeable difference.

I have a Fender acoustic folk guitar about the same size and my Fender folk guitar by far and away blows the Rogue Starter out of the park for note quality and projection of sound. That guitar is significantly higher in price, however, the Rogue full size RA-090 in my opinion plays on par with guitars significantly higher in price. So, that's what I expected from the smaller sized Rogue Starter.

You get what you pay for in this: A guitar with a nice finish that looks the part, but one that doesn't have a professional sound. My advice to anyone thinking of buying this particular model who's just starting out should consider purchasing the full size Rogue.

If you're just starting out and don't want to make a heavy investment in a guitar, playing a guitar where the notes and intonation isn't correct will only frustrate you because what you're playing won't sound good. The RA-090 is the way to go if you're looking in this price range. If you're looking for a smaller sized guitar, I would recommend buying a different brand and model.

I have always wanted to learn to play the guitar. I found this one and though for the price, if I didn't learn to play it, I wouldn't lose much money. I took my first lesson today and it sounds great. Perfect for a beginner.

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

Comments about Rogue Starter Acoustic Guitar:

Beautiful guitar was my first impression. We ordered this in pink. We purchased this for our 5 (soon to be 6) year old daughter as she specifically asked for a 'real' guitar for Christmas. I read many reviews and this guitar has great ones. I assumed it would be a little large for her but anything else in our price range just didn't review well and I didn't want to chance it. The guitar tuned great and it sounds exceptional especially considering the price! I will say that the pink guitar in the photo was not what we received but I LOVED the one we received so much better I see no reason to complain only compliment! The pink guitar we received is a light pink almost peach-pink in color with a pick guard that has a gold hummingbird like design on it. The guitar is gorgeous and we cannot wait for Christmas morning! My daughter is going to LOVE this! It does not have fret markers however you can purchase these online and place them yourself. I will apply 'dry' ones. The strings are a tad harsh on the fingers as others have mentioned but nothing that won't be expected of steel strings. I will purchase some finger tip protectors for her fingers if they bother her too much. As far as the strings coming up high off the neck as others have mentioned I just don't see this being a problem and do not myself feel they are high. Personal preference I guess. I'd say this guitar makes a great starter guitar. Tunes up well, seems to stay tuned while I played it a bit, smaller in size by a little (38" overall length), and is just an all around attractive and great sounding guitar for the money. Came in perfect condition and arrived VERY quickly. happy customer here. :)

Appearance and construction are excellent, especially for the price.
Tuning was easy and it held.

The included Allen wrench is a bit confusing, since there were no instructions and there does not to be a truss rod for neck adjustment.
