Comments about Schecter Guitar Research SGR 006 Electric Guitar:
I bought my first one of these used in a pawnshop for almost this price, so MF's price is a real bargain for a brand new one!
Although it's not my favorite tonewood, the one plus for the Basswood body is that it is really consistent and neutral sounding. It lets you define the guitar's overall sound with the pickups more than most other woods, so changing pickups is like changing the whole guitar sound-wise. It's like a blank canvas that you can tweak in any direction you want. The pickups it comes stock with are geared toward metal and real high output stuff. For that, they're fine, but I like a bluesier, gutsier sound. I rewound the pickups on my first one and installed Alnico II magnets for a more traditional sound. That really opened the guitar up. It made it clearer and gave it a much wider tonal range. I also changed the cap to a paper & oil type and split the coils on the neck pickup and put in a 5-way switch. That also added an amazing amount of versatility and I can even get those jangly Strat tones out of it now. In fact, I liked it so much that I ended up buying 4 more of them. I've since modded the pickups, switch and tone stack on all of them and I couldn't be happier with them now. They're a real workhorse that can cover a lot of tonal territory!
The guitar itself actually has an old-tine, vintage feeling neck that is one of the most comfortable I've ever played! They have also all been remarkably consistent in feel and sound. They are very easy to adjust the setup to fit your tastes. On each one, I've just changed the height of the bridge and tweaked the truss rod a little for perfect action. You can get the strings really low if you want without buzzing. The Rosewood fingerboards on all of mine are a very high quality and 3 of them even had a nice flame figuring in the Maple neck. The flat radius and jumbo frets make it a joy to play and you can really dig in when you need to do a lot of deep bending. It just really feels good!
I have a lot of other guitars - and most are a lot more expensive. Despite that, these are still one of my favorite models to play just because they feel so darned good to my hands. I love the size and the balance of the guitar too - it's very comfortable to wear and light enough to play for long periods without getting fatigued.
At this price, this guitar is an outrageous bargain and Schecter is to be commended for developing such a simple, yet elegant design that is great for beginners and good enough to use professionally with just a few minor and inexpensive modifications - it's real gem and I recommend it wholeheartedly!
