I've been learning to play guitar on an electric for a few months. I was eventually bitten by the acoustic bug and really wanted one to learn to play songs via fingerpicking. There are lots of options in this price range, but I couldn't find anything that matched the quality of construction or sound of the Seagull S6(I'm new so take my opinion of sound with a grain of salt).

I went to a few stores and tried Yamaha, Takamine, and even one of the Martin 000 models in this price range. The Martin looked and sounded very good, but the neck was made from some laminate called Stratabond and I wanted more solid woods in my guitar. The Seagull still sounded better and definitely had more volume when I compared them back to back. The dreadnought size really contributes to the volume as expected, but you can fingerpick without nails or picks and get a nice loud sound, but if you strum this thing really makes some noise.

The other reviews are accurate. The quality of craftsmanship is top notch. My S6 arrived quickly with no defects or blemishes. Once tuned it sounded great. The only problem I had was it felt like I needed to press down REALLY hard to make the notes ring clear. After a month of struggle I had a professional look at it. He adjusted the truss rod and now it plays so much better. Other people may not need any fine tuning but this was all it took to make my playing much more comfortable. I was prepared to pay for a full setup anyway, but the minor adjustment was a nice surprise.

As for finding the right case you may have to look around as this dreadnought size is a little deeper than others. I initially tried the Gator Delux ABS Dreadought case but it wouldn't shut completely without putting too much pressure on the bridge/saddle. Oddly enough the cheaper Gator GL-Dread Lightweight Dreadnought case is a snug but safe fit. I've also been using The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking by Mark Hanson to learn. It has been very helpful and after only a month I've learned quite a bit.

Side note: some pictures online show the Seagull S6 as having a black pickguard. As of Sept. 2012 the one I received had a tortoise shell pickguard. I included a picture to show the difference. Looks sharp.

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

Entire transaction was seamless and guitar arrived quickly. I was amazed at the level of construction and quality control, as I opened the box. GORGEOUS guitar, which required no further set-up/adjustment. Quite loud and resonant. Great sound. Much nicer than ~$800 acoustic I used before this purchase. Beautiful materials/construction. If I had to again, I'd buy this guitar (from Musician's Friend) in a heartbeat.

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

Six yrs. ago I tried comparing Seagull`s Oringal S6 acoustic guitar ( cedar/ Sitka Spruce soundboard tops ), and chose the combination Wild Cherry back/ sides/ Sitka Spruce instead. The reason is for my strumming and rhythm playing. I play a lot of Country Bluegrass/ Blues. The combination of woods and other elements that are contributing to the production of your guitar in terms of specific frequencies and the HARMONIC TONES is what determines the voice of your guitar. Only your ears can convince your brain which guitar you`'re please with. My guitar sounds louder than a solid Cedar top design for fingerstylist. The 2 MODELS are excellent for playing any style of music. The Canadians are in a good position for this opportunity market.A musician would be very happy to own one of these guitars. Elixir light gauge/ Dunlop Acoustic light GAUGES work real nice embellishments in the chord melodies department. One exception with my guitar, there is no preamp, just old fashion expendable energy and my fingers.

This is a beginner guitar for me as I have been playing drums for 35 years but have always wanted to learn guitar. It is at a great price point with many satisfied users and a long history. Compared to the entry-level Fenders, Yamahas, and Gibsons at the local music store it seems better constructed and sounds better. I'm happy.

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I have a 45 year old Gibson Hummingbird but that was my only guitar. When I was younger I played a lot but I was completely self-taught. I put the guitar away for a number of years and just recently decided I was going to 'learn' how to play the guitar the way I should have in the beginning so I posted myself as a novice.I went looking for another guitar for everyday use and stumbled on the reviews for the Seagull S6. I watched a lot of videos and read lots of reviews but the price was a bit daunting financially. A friend alerted me to an offer on Musician's Friend for a 'restock' (a guitar that does not for some reason pass factory inspection and is reworked and then passes) for less money. I jumped on the deal and am so glad I did. So happy am I with the guitar that I ended up buying a Yamaha FG 700 as well to use as my knock around guitar because the S6 is just too precious of an instrument to put through any abuse. Since then I have been a loyal customer of Musician's Friend. The prices are usually the lowest, the selection high, and the service outstanding.

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

Bass guitar has always been my instrument, but wanted a good acoustic 6-string just for the fun of playing.
I couldn't justify spending a couple weeks wages on a guitar but wanted something with a good reputation. The S6 Original fit the bill. Found this restock item on Musicians Friend at a greatly reduced price. Thought restock might mean some hidden problem, but have been extremely pleased. Only concern is the action. While I've seen comments on the web about the S6 being hard to play because of high action, the guitar I received has the opposite condition. Very easy to play, but buzzes on the bass strings between second and sixth frets (only with hard pick strumming). As a restock, makes me wonder if someone else adjusted the truss rod to lower the strings (or could be effects of winter humidity and temp changes).
Besides sound and playability, I like instruments that stand out from the crowd. This guitar's unique head stock, darker colored cedar top and eye-popping wild cherry grain on sides and back create a distinctive personality.

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I procured my S6 in 1999! Back before they were really in the "forefront" of the industry I suppose. Older model with the L.R. Baggs onboard electrical stuff. She's always been a wonderful instrument and as time goes on... well some things improve with age and this is certainly one of them. Tone, playability... STABILITY (at this age it's like a ROCK!). The tuners are still smooth as glass and the action is nearly electric like. Though as I recall, i did a bit of setup on it when I originally purchased it's been so long I can' remember exactly what I did... but I do recall that the truss rod is singularly one of the most functional I've ever come across on ANY guitar. If they're still making them now the way they did in 1999 you will not at all be diappointed!

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

Years ago I owned a Gibson acoustic guitar but finally sold it and acquired a Yamaha classical.
I finally decided I needed to have both and noticed that one of the musicians in our church choir played a Seagull guitar. He raved about it, and liked the idea that the neck is just a bit wider than most steel string guitars, so the transition from Classical to acoustic is not so dramatic. So I ordered this model and frankly it is MUCH better than the old Gibson that I owned, plus this model was a MUCH better value. This Seagull is so easy to play, feels so great and has such a rich and great volume. I could not be more pleased!

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I've always wanted to learn to play guitar, so a few years ago I bought the cheapest one I could find just to get a feel for it. Needless to say it was very difficult to play - definitely not something I enjoyed. But I'm no quitter! I kept reading reviews online that instrument quality really has an effect on beginner success, so I decided I wanted a better guitar for Christmas this past year.

The Seagull not only looks good, but it is also very lightweight and just feels good (and smells good, but now we're getting a little weird). I like that it is different from everything else out there, as far as styling.

As a beginner, I'm not much into the finer points in terms of how it sounds... it is loud enough and sounds like a guitar, so...?

I've had it for a few months now, and I've learned so much more on it in that short time than in the years I had the cheap one. I wish I'd started with the S6!
