It's great for literally any style of music. Whether you're playing in your church or in a local punk band, it's perfect for you. It's one of the most versatile instruments I've ever played. Expect to be amazed.
The Lake Placid Blue finish is flawless. It really meshes well with the pearloid pickguard. The tuners hold up very well, especially for a "budget" instrument. The knobs and pots are fine. I only wish that the input jack were side mounted as opposed to a top mount. However, this can be taken care of with a couple of modifications if one wished to do so. The guitar is also surprisingly heavy (weight-wise).
The neck is fine for my hands, but some may find it to be on the thicker side. I've always liked a fat neck, so it's perfect for me. Some of the frets were unlevel, but I always take my new guitars to a pro and let them set it up for me, so this was not a huge problem and was remedied quickly.
The single coil pickup in the neck position is really jangly and sounds great clean, especially with some chorus and/or reverb. Through an acoustic simulator pedal, it sounds especially beautiful. When overdriven, the single coil sings with a unique tone that I can't compare to anything else. Awesome is the only word that comes to mind.
The humbucker is amazingly hot. Switching between the too pickups is like night and day. On a clean setting, the pickup is very twangy; Overdriven, the thing rivals any high output humbucker on the market.
In the middle position, you get an almost out-of-phase-like Strat tone... You know, that Richie Valens/SRV-like tone. This is my favorite setting when playing through a clean channel. It's perfect for blues players.
I must stress, as with any purchase of a "brand-new" guitar, that you take it to a professional and have them set it up for you. I've found very few guitars that are set up correctly out of the box. I've seen too many people buy brand new guitars only to cast them off as "cheap" or "unplayable" and then find out that they haven't had the instrument set up and were just going off of how the guitar was set up at the factory.
That being said, this guitar is an amazing value for the price. However, don't expect it, or any brand new guitar, to be set up perfectly when it arrives at your doorstep. Also, expect to pay around $45-$50 to have it set up for you. When my Cyclone arrived, I immediately took it to the guy who sets up all my guitars and had him set it up. Specifically, he said that the frets were unlevel, the intonation was off, and several other adjustments were needed. I'm metioning this in the review not to criticize the instrument, but to further solidify the fact that you NEED to get your new guitars checked out and set up by a pro.
Now, my guitar is perfect and I wouldn't trade it for a "real" Fender that costs four times as much.
Best value for your buck. I've owned $1,000 guitars that weren't this nice. The Cyclone is also perfect for guys who want an instrument that they can tweak and modify themselves; the thing was built to be rodded out like an old muscle car. Haha.

Average at this price... but still fun!
Not a bad little instrument, especially for the price. Mine had a few issues, as expected. I have a few guitars in this price range, and none of them were perfect.

Not a bad little instrument, especially for the price. Mine had a few issues, as expected. I have a few guitars in this price range, and none of them were perfect.
The paint around the neck pocket has an edge to it on mine, and you can see some green paint/filler. I almost sent it back. Don't be surprised if yours has a few finish flaws. The humbucker was extremely microphonic until I potted it in wax. Like other reviewers, I think its too hot. The neck pickup is nice.
Any guitar at this price probably needs a setup. Mine did-- action way too high, intonation off, tremolo so stiff that it wouldn't budge. Needed new strings right away-- mine were visibly kinked.
The best aspects of the Cyclone are the tuners and the bridge. The tuners are on par with my 2011 Standard Strat. The bridge saddles appear to be Fender parts. Nice. It is well balanced, and the neck is comfortable and fast-- especially with the slightly shorter scale.
Overall, if you want a perfect guitar out of the box, I'm sure MF would be happy to sell you a more expensive instrument. If you want a fun guitar for a change of pace, and don't mind the chance of a little issue here or there, go for it.

Comments about Squier Cyclone Electric Guitar:
This is a realy good guitar. its only problem is not many people like how it looks. I did not when I ordered it but when it came it looked a lot better . The price is fantastic because its like a fender stratocaster but cheaper. Definetley think about the cyclone when you want to get a new guitar.

Comments about Squier Cyclone Electric Guitar:
Well this is my second one of these. After waiting for year for the lake placid blue to become available, my wife bought one for me for Christmas. I had a black one and did a review back in the summer. This new production is definitely a bit higher quality. Smoother frets, no pealing plastic on the pick guard, and still the same great feel and tone. I originally wanted a mustang but I don't like the large egg shaped bridge that to me looks a bit out of place on the smaller bodied guitar. Plus I would have modded it to be a single/humbucker anyway and really love the out of phase wiring vs the switches that I always scrape my knuckles on. I know that it sounds funny to say about such an inexpensive guitar but it really is a dream guitar. I always loved mustangs but for 4-5 times the cost plus all the mods I would need to do, I would have ended up turning it into this guitar anyway. Love it!
Grab 'em while you can. If this goes back to a Fender production then you can expect it to jump in cost considerably and it won't be much better in quality.

I love the smaller body size with the full thick body with single coil neck pickip with a the single bridge humbucker. My kind of guitar. It is a keeper for me. I like this guitar. Thank you.. Dan

Comments about Squier Cyclone Electric Guitar:
I bought this guitar to have a backup to my vintage Mustang. The action and intonation were set very well however the fret ends are not properly rounded. The pickups are not very high quality and almost are reversed in tone from the Mustang. The neck pickup has way too much "bite". It sounds like a bridge pickup should. The Humbucker bridge pickup is very hot and very muddy. I had to lower the bridge pick up a lot to match volume level to the neck pick up.
Needless to say, I am now on a hunt for some real vintage Mustang pickups......
Pros

Comments about Squier Cyclone Electric Guitar:
Out of the shipping box this guitar's intonation setup is very good. The overall craftmanship on this guitar is excellent. Sunburst finish is up to par and the electronics all work good.Tremelo works well and I like the medium jumbo fretboard with the exception of the frets will need filed smoother on the edge of the neck, but this isn't a big deal, because I can still play it fine. This guitar is kind of heavy, probably because of the Alder body. I've been playing this through a Fender Mustang 1 amp and the pickups have a really nice tone variations using the 3 way toggle switch. Not as good as a real Strat, but unique in its own way. There is one thing that I think would improve this is if the guitar jack was on the edge of the body, however, I'll just buy a guitar cord with a right angle so it doesn't stick straight out. I plan to use this for rhythm guitar mainly. All in all this is a well made guitar and would be easy to upgrade the pickups if needed.
Pros

Cons
- Needed Setup
- Rough Fretwork
- Sketchy Bridge

Comments about Squier Cyclone Electric Guitar:
The bridge pickup is pretty hot, with a decent tone for most uses. Surprising for this price point. The neck pickup is a little thin and flat for my tastes, so I replaced it with a white Lace Sensor Silver which is pretty cheap, and looks sharp.
Upgrading the neck pickup, I was surprised to find the cavity under the pickguard is routed in a big rectangle under the pickup area. This means adding or changing pickups in a radical way is super easy; just cut a new hole in the pickguard to mount your pickups... no routing! The electronics are fine for this price range, and surprisingly clean: no messy wires, good solder points, simple wiring (with lots of slack in the wires, nice).
The neck is natural (no finish), but well made and required very little setup. The back of the neck could be a little smoother though, I ended up sanding it with fine grit paper and a buffing pad to slick it up. The fret work is good for this price range, but I ended up dressing the edges a bit for my tastes. Also, there were a few high frets which needed adjusting to get the low action I like. The bridge is the only serious annoyance for me. It's workable, but typical for low end guitars (and last on my list of upgrades).
Out of the box, it's a great guitar for the price. With a little work (or a trip to your local guitar tech) and an upgrade or two, and you end up with a solid, fun guitar that's very gig-worthy for a bargain price.
I only wish the US distributors carried the full line of colors available in this factory run, including: graffiti yellow, pink, fiesta red, sonic blue and surf green (and a couple others). MF please add more colors for the next run! :)

Comments about Squier Cyclone Electric Guitar:
I love finding great guitars at great prices. I have an old Fender Gemini II acoustic that I get more compliments on than I could count, a 90's Ibanez Gio that is perfectly balanced in my hands, a Squier Deluxe w/ upgraded pups that feels and sounds better than any MIM Fender I have seen, and this Squier Cyclone. I have no idea what people are talking about when they say that they can not hear a difference between the middle and neck position. It may be subtle but if you have a halfway decent amp then you can definitely tell. The neck is a full sounding single coil and the middle gives you an out of phase tele-like sound while the bridge screams. I will probably change out the pick ups but only because I have always wanted a p-rails with a 3 way toggle. Feels great and stays in tune good but can be improved with upgraded hardware. The frets will need to be smoothed a bit and the pick guard had some plastic shavings still attached. But even if you fix all of these problems and have it done by a professional tech you still wouldn't even come close to paying as much as a Fender Mustang. I think this is the deal of the decade if you want a short scale mustang-like guitar. And since the body has a swimming pool routing under the pickguard, you could get a new pick guard with any configuration of pickups that you want and it will fit in nicely. I also noticed that there is shielding paint coating the cavity which is unheard of on cheaper model guitars. Overall a great deal even if you just want it as a project!
