I bought this Pink Mini Strat for my Daughter's 4th birthday. She loves it -- and really, to me, that's all it matters. She likes grabbing my guitars, and has been crazy about them since before she walked. For her birthday, a guitar of her own was all she wanted (I tried every other imaginable thing, she kept getting back to that). Proud Dad, gladly complied -- and my train of thought was that to give her an actual instrument she can grow with. From the begining I did not want to give her a cheese guitar that would just turn into a dust-mite habitat. She takes it out and strums every day since her birthday so already money well spent. I know she will keep learning and getting better as she grows. If not, even her mom enjoys this little gem.

On the actual guitar specs, it is a fantastic, believe me you cannot find a better instrument for the size/price. I should emphasize this is a beginners Squier, so it won't have compare to an actual AM Fender -- that said, this is so much fun to play. The tunners require you to find that "sweet" spot to keep it tuned. Yes, it does take a bit to get used to them, but I was not expecting anything out of this world, they work, and hold tune long enough. I was pleasantly surpirsed that my daughter's guitar entonation was spot on, and the action is great. I also got it with a nice gig bag and strap. The pick ups actually sound great for what it is, but if you put on some effects, this thing turns into a beast! In fact, when testing it, I found it hard to put down, it is incrediblly fun to play, especially because its so tinny and it delivers a very nice sound. If you're in the market for a guitar for your kid, this is a great investment. Of course as any first guitar she will grow out of it, but definitely it is something she already treasures, and to me as I said before, seeing my little girl smile is all that matters.

When will I learn to NOT go by reviews on these sites?

I got this thing and right off the bat I could tell that the nut wasn't right. This isn't a "bone" nut, or even a "plastic" one. The thing on the guitar that I got feels like some kind of vinyl. The third string was absolutely dead. I removed the strings to make the slots a bit bigger and to TRY and round them out a bit. I also had to clean up the front and back of the nut as it looked like it was cut with a hacksaw with pieces of "whatever it is made of" sticking out of each string groove front and back.

Then comes the next problem: The neck tension is as loose as it can get without falling apart inside the neck (if that were possible). I tightened it up a bit and set the neck as best as I could until I could restring it.

Problem number three: The tuning keys on this thing are not even good enough to call trash. A few of them are so hard to turn that I was tempted to use pliers on them.

I got the neck tension set as well as possible after restringing. The nut is still a lost cause. whatever the soft material is that it is made from is going to keep grabbing the strings. It won't stay in tune. Not that any of that matters as again: The tuners are not even good enough to call trash. And it's not like you can just replace them. Anyone who has one of these knows that is not the case. Nothing fits this thing.

I forgot to mention that the output jack nut was ready to fall off. I will have to remove the jack plate and tighten that thing up.

I am disappointed. I bought this for my granddaughter to learn on. I don't see how my daughter is going to even attempt to tune this thing for her as I can barely turn the tuners myself.

If it weren't so close to Christmas, I would send it back. This is the worst purchase I have ever made from Musician's Friend in the many years I have been shopping here - and it just HAD to be a guitar for my seven year old granddaughter.

I think I am going to start buying locally. It might cost more, but at least you can see what you are getting.

Comments about Squier Mini Strat Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar for my 11 yo daughter for Christmas. After some reviews I was worried that it would not meet my expectations but from a first guitar for a younger kid stand point it definitely did. The 3/4 guitar is much easier for my daughter to handle and play versus my Fender Strat. It is an affordable option that exposes your kid to the opportunity to learn the guitar. The mini doesn't sound good if you are playing it very hard as an adult or wheel house strumming it. I think if you are an adult or older kid another guitar in the Squier line-up would suit you better from a size and play-ability stand point.

Comments about Squier Mini Strat Electric Guitar:

I guess the demand for this guitar was pretty high because I was informed right away that it was backordered. This was going to be a gift for the granddaughter of one of my guitar students. I was more concerned about getting one in perfect condition more than getting one right away. When I finally got it, within a reasonable amount of time, the tone control didn't work at all and the volume control didn't function until the last 10% or less of the turn of the knob. So it went from silent to full volume with nothing much in between. Otherwise the guitar was nice looking and playable so I had hopes for the replacement order. When that one came it was so close to having the same issues that I thought it could possibly be the exact same guitar. Bui who knows? Maybe the quality control was way down due to trying to play catch up with a lot of back orders. As it turned out, the third shipment of this guitar was the charm. Everything worked as it should. I did a bit of a set up on it but it seemed pretty good right out of the box. For the price I think it's a good deal although I could have done without the hassle of making two returns. My wife has said she never wants to play an electric guitar (she plays a classical) but upon seeing and trying this one she was almost ready to say that she wanted one for herself. So I may end of getting another one of these some day. I think (and hope) my luck will be better on getting one that's perfect now that the backorders are probably all taken care of, but I'd be ready to make a return if necessary. BTW... Musicians Friend was friendly and helpful when assisting me with the returns.

Comments about Squier Mini Strat Electric Guitar:

So I purchased this about three weeks ago for my daughters seventh birthday and am still fighting to set it up properly much less make it playable. I can understand having to set up an instrument but some of the flaws need to be mentioned.

      Cons:
-roughly 1/64" gap between neck and body on the bass side.
-input jack was mounted improperly (I had approximately 1/8" of the plug sticking out due to the plate being mounted wrong causing me to remount the plate in the proper position).
-the saddles move side to side causing the guitar to come out of tune.
-pickups produce an incredibly tinny tone (Used a Champion 40, Super-Champ, and Marshall MG50CFX with same result)
-truss rod is extremely stiff and tough to adjust.
-tuners, electronics, body material are inferior quality

      Pros:
-Perfect size for kids or traveling (My daughter loves it)
-Small smooth neck which is great for kids
-It's a hardtail (I have blocked my strats and wish I could get this on a full sized Squier or MIM Strat)
-Pickguard was quadruple wrapped in protective plastic
      -it's a relatively inexpensive guitar

If my daughter sticks with it I may try to drop some Duncans or DiMarzios in to see if I can get a better sound. I gave the three stars because I am a weirdo and like to work on instruments. The majority of the cons are fixable but need to be mentioned for those who don't like to work on their equipment. The no of recommend to a friend would be yes if I knew they didn't mind doing the extra work needed.

Make no mistake, this a strat. True, it's great for kids and beginners, but I have used one to play in coffee houses and restaurants for the past three years. I had a mild stroke which left three fingers on my left hand numb. I've made no mods on anything and it sounds and plays better than the mexican strat I played a few years back. For the price, there is nothing in this class that can touch it.
