Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

After reading the five star reviews for this guitar, I ditched my EVH Wolfgang Special in favor of the AX40. I am glad I did! It has a great feel in your hands with a solid neck that perfectly aligns the strings on the fingerboard and across the pickups. The pickups and tone are brighter than the EVH at full volume, but rolling it back flattens the response and you can go from virtually clean to dirt easily. I recommend ditching the 0.10 strings in favor of the EVH custom strings - it really made a difference in the overall tone and control of the harmonics. This is an excellent guitar for the money - and thanks to Musicians Friend for the Prez day sale - I was able to buy the guitar and a Music Man Case for the price of the guitar!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I have been playing this guitar non-stop for 4 years now and I happen to love it. No, its not your top of the line Gibson, but this thing Looks gorgeous and its solid. All I did was string it up with my fav strings, changed nothing else. The shape of the neck is very comfortable and makes it a ton of fun to play. You can get all kinds of sounds from these pick-ups.They arent bad at all. Sounds awesome through a nice 2x12 Tube Amp. I love the unique headstock and kinda EVH shape to the body. Everyone who sees it loves it.

      Sterling AX40

      By John Heron

      from Canada

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

Overall, I am happy, although the shipping to Canada, the duty, and the changes needed to make the guitar wanted were a pain in the ass. I love the thing now though. You are going to get what you pay for, and guitar makers are like car makers, they have their line, but there are going to be base models up to luxury models. The good news is guitars are easier and cheaper to upgrade!
I tried the Music Man model in stores and loved them. I then read the reviews for Sterling guitars at Musician's Friend (couldn't get Sterling in Canada at the time), and was a little apprehensive. I bought it anyway.
In the end, the pick ups were pretty bad, woolly, weak, flat, as was the trem system (a lower end Floyd Rose model), which is made of inferior metal and started to wear almost immediately, and it definitely needed a set up, fret ends needed to be smoothed down, pitch and tonality were well off (no one takes pride in their product much anymore it seems), but otherwise, it is a beautiful guitar, gorgeous neck, beautiful layout, compact, easy to play. Some people complain about the lack of a tone nob, I am not one of them. Beatiful look and finish.
Again, other than some of the hardware, it is a very well thought out, well made guitar. Great playability, compact, nice and light.
I've read some reviews harping on the fact that the guitar was not built in the USA, but even the guitars that ARE built in the USA are still badly set up (or not at all), and depending on the brand/model, have some poor hardware. But with changing the pickups and the trem (which ideally I shouldn't have to do, but you get what you pay for), I now have basically the same guitar as the Music Man model, which sounds amazing (a Gibson Oiginal and a Gibson Dirty Fingers pick up) at less than half the price!

      sterling ax 40 review

      By Rick Marshall

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

this guitar is a great instrument to carry around , i use this guitar as my 2nd guitar on the road , just because i love so much my first , a home made strat ( frankenstrat's little brother)
gives me what i expect of it period.
looks nice feels nice , perfect size feel , weight .
      although the humbuckers sound cheap.
the neck with asymetric curve is my first try and i like it , didn t make a big change to me but its alright
i like the wood , the neck is fine for now but i expect to have trouble with it some day , not good quality wood on my axe
i think that if they had a real floyd and decent humbucker it would be a great price

      Decent Guitar.....after some adjustments

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I bought the AX40 about a year ago and it had some issues out of the box. There was a good amount of fret buzz, the Floyd Rose wasn't setup well, the intonation was horrible, it seemed to have a dead spot around the high E, and it went out of tune all the time. I took it for a setup and a new set of strings (9's) at a local chain and it was better, but it still had quite a bit of fret buzz and the dead spot around the high E was still there. I decided to give it another shot and took it to a luthier who was highly recommended and had him do a thorough setup as well as add an EVH Frankenstein pickup along with 10-46 EB Slinkies. WOW, what a huge difference! Feels like a different guitar and sounds incredible. He did some fret work and adjusted the Floyd Rose, readjusted the truss rod, and performed a bunch of other adjustments. All I can say is, the Floyd Rose feels so much smoother to use, the fret buzz is gone, it stays in tune regardless of what I do to it. If you would have asked me what I thought of the guitar 6 months ago I would have said it wasn't worth the money, but now after adjustments, and the addition of the Frankenstein humbucker, it's a great sounding/playing guitar. I'd say a good amount of the credit should go to the luthier, but regardless, I'm happy as well with the guitar now. I can plug it into my Fender Mustang IV and nail the EVH tone.

Killer if you spend a little more money

      By Unnamed User-wYXK3

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

Am not going to be buying an original Axis for quite some time. Am a huge EVH and Jamie Humphries fan so thought would try this out. Got mine on a MF promotion for $480. Could not get over how beautiful it is when I held it in my hands for the first time (I have it in transparent gold). However plugging it in was disappointing. The pickups were very muddy. I put it a Tonezone in the bridge and an Air Norton in the neck and its now one of my favourite guitars. Killer sound! The lack of a tone knob produces more bite and definition and I really don't miss a tone knob as much as I thought I would. I also bought a D-Tuna and installed it but its never worked right. The fret edges were a little jagged but I fixed that with a nail file and a whole lot of patience. It has quite a chunky neck but surprisingly comfortable to play. The Floyd Rose is so so and I can never keep in tune even with the locks clamped down. My Schecter has an original floyd rose and it is really much better. It was also in need a good set up when it first arrived but thankfully I'm fairly decent at setting up guitars. Lastly apart form the frets the build quality is excellent. And though its not listed in the description the maple neck looks like birds eye maple to me.Bottom line: If you are willing to upgrade the pickups and get a good set up this guitar is awesome!

Out of the box in need work....

      By fasteddy3

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I tried to buy one of these at my local GC. The one they had bad fret edges. The Salesman at the store would order me a new one out of the warehouse and have it sent to the store. If it had the same problem I could return it right then. Sounded good and he order me one. When it came in, it had the same problem. The salesman said "it would cost me only 30 dollars to fix it" I said " would you buy a new car that needed new tires?" I got the same face from him that I get when I ask my 7 year old what is Square root of pie... No Sterlings at my house.

      Great value!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I picked a used OLP licenced version of the Music man which I found out was made before the Sterling model. They no longer make any OLP guitars so now Sterling has taken over making the Musicman copy. I had a chance to play this guitar in a local GC and loved it but walked away and didn't buy it.I went back a few days latter and it was sold. Recently I seen an OLP used and tried it out...SOLD on the spot! Compairing the two versions I remember the Sterling used and unfinished back of neck vs OLP lacquered neck. They are both pretty much the same including the low price. Either one for the money are a great deal if your looking for a guitar that feels small but comfortable to play, with a decent thick neck.

      Great Guitar

      By Anonymous

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I just bought this guitar as "Used - Like New" condition 1 from MusiciansFriend. First off, I have bought several guitars in this condition and they have all been great values from MusiciansFriend. The Used Like new stuff is awesome. Anyway, this guitar is great. Im a hobbyist and play through a line6 pod. I can get any tone I want with this guitar. I know its not the real thing Music Man Axis, but it is also $1300 cheaper. I have also owned the real deal Axis as well. Aside from the neck (just the wood finish), this guitar is the same. The real deal Axis has the Birdseye maple with is awesome. The neck on this one is just plain ole maple. But it is the exact same contour and shape. Plays great. Pickups sound great. Action is low and the Floyd stays in perfect tune at all times. I will certainly buy another one, if one comes up in Used Like New condition. Point of note. Although it says it comes with locking tuners...it doesnt.
