Great guitar! Great Price!

By VMWRockstar

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I have an older AXIS (the real one as some would call it) and the AX40's features and workmanship live up to that of the more expensive AXIS. The lony downside of this model is presently no additional colors or styles available. A Tobacco Sunburst or Flametop would be nice! One other note, I have seen some comments saying this is exactly the same as the Peavey Wolfgang EXP model. I had one of those in the same color and yes the finish was pretty much the same, but playability was not. Much if the hardware on the EXP Wolfgangs were not as nice as what you will find on the AX40. The Tuners, Licensed Floyd and most of all the unfinished maple neck on the AX40 are much better than the EXP Wolfgang! Just love this guitar!!!

Killer if you spend a little more money

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

Am not going to be buying an original Axis for quite some time. Am a huge EVH and Jamie Humphries fan so thought would try this out. Got mine on a MF promotion for $480. Could not get over how beautiful it is when I held it in my hands for the first time (I have it in transparent gold). However plugging it in was disappointing. The pickups were very muddy. I put it a Tonezone in the bridge and an Air Norton in the neck and its now one of my favourite guitars. Killer sound! The lack of a tone knob produces more bite and definition and I really don't miss a tone knob as much as I thought I would. I also bought a D-Tuna and installed it but its never worked right. The fret edges were a little jagged but I fixed that with a nail file and a whole lot of patience. It has quite a chunky neck but surprisingly comfortable to play. The Floyd Rose is so so and I can never keep in tune even with the locks clamped down. My Schecter has an original floyd rose and it is really much better. It was also in need a good set up when it first arrived but thankfully I'm fairly decent at setting up guitars. Lastly apart form the frets the build quality is excellent. And though its not listed in the description the maple neck looks like birds eye maple to me.Bottom line: If you are willing to upgrade the pickups and get a good set up this guitar is awesome!

ITS ALL ABOU THE PLAYER AND HIS OR HER ABILITY

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I have this guitar and I need to say that a good guitar player can make a cheaper, inexpensive or substandard guitar sound really good. If people arent happy with this guitar because it 'doesnt sound good' then the problem isnt with the product but more likely with the person looking back at you in the mirror.

Decent Guitar.....after some adjustments

By David Schleich

from PA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I bought the AX40 about a year ago and it had some issues out of the box. There was a good amount of fret buzz, the Floyd Rose wasn't setup well, the intonation was horrible, it seemed to have a dead spot around the high E, and it went out of tune all the time. I took it for a setup and a new set of strings (9's) at a local chain and it was better, but it still had quite a bit of fret buzz and the dead spot around the high E was still there. I decided to give it another shot and took it to a luthier who was highly recommended and had him do a thorough setup as well as add an EVH Frankenstein pickup along with 10-46 EB Slinkies. WOW, what a huge difference! Feels like a different guitar and sounds incredible. He did some fret work and adjusted the Floyd Rose, readjusted the truss rod, and performed a bunch of other adjustments. All I can say is, the Floyd Rose feels so much smoother to use, the fret buzz is gone, it stays in tune regardless of what I do to it. If you would have asked me what I thought of the guitar 6 months ago I would have said it wasn't worth the money, but now after adjustments, and the addition of the Frankenstein humbucker, it's a great sounding/playing guitar. I'd say a good amount of the credit should go to the luthier, but regardless, I'm happy as well with the guitar now. I can plug it into my Fender Mustang IV and nail the EVH tone.

I can't put this guitar down.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar about six months ago and I can't put it down. The neck is smooth. The pickups are great. The flame top is awesome. The strings stay in tune. It has become my favorite guitar. Don't just take my word for it, try one for yourself. You'll be very pleased.I've read others talk about changing out pickups or the tuners and I ask myself, why? The guitar's hardware is good enough. Some people just have to find something negative to say about everything, but there's nothing negative about this guitar.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I have been playing this guitar non-stop for 4 years now and I happen to love it. No, its not your top of the line Gibson, but this thing Looks gorgeous and its solid. All I did was string it up with my fav strings, changed nothing else. The shape of the neck is very comfortable and makes it a ton of fun to play. You can get all kinds of sounds from these pick-ups.They arent bad at all. Sounds awesome through a nice 2x12 Tube Amp. I love the unique headstock and kinda EVH shape to the body. Everyone who sees it loves it.

    sterling ax 40 review

    By Rick Marshall

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

this guitar is a great instrument to carry around , i use this guitar as my 2nd guitar on the road , just because i love so much my first , a home made strat ( frankenstrat's little brother)
gives me what i expect of it period.
looks nice feels nice , perfect size feel , weight .
    although the humbuckers sound cheap.
the neck with asymetric curve is my first try and i like it , didn t make a big change to me but its alright
i like the wood , the neck is fine for now but i expect to have trouble with it some day , not good quality wood on my axe
i think that if they had a real floyd and decent humbucker it would be a great price

Out of the box in need work....

    By fasteddy3

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I tried to buy one of these at my local GC. The one they had bad fret edges. The Salesman at the store would order me a new one out of the warehouse and have it sent to the store. If it had the same problem I could return it right then. Sounded good and he order me one. When it came in, it had the same problem. The salesman said "it would cost me only 30 dollars to fix it" I said " would you buy a new car that needed new tires?" I got the same face from him that I get when I ask my 7 year old what is Square root of pie... No Sterlings at my house.

    Great Guitar

    By Anonymous

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I just bought this guitar as "Used - Like New" condition 1 from MusiciansFriend. First off, I have bought several guitars in this condition and they have all been great values from MusiciansFriend. The Used Like new stuff is awesome. Anyway, this guitar is great. Im a hobbyist and play through a line6 pod. I can get any tone I want with this guitar. I know its not the real thing Music Man Axis, but it is also $1300 cheaper. I have also owned the real deal Axis as well. Aside from the neck (just the wood finish), this guitar is the same. The real deal Axis has the Birdseye maple with is awesome. The neck on this one is just plain ole maple. But it is the exact same contour and shape. Plays great. Pickups sound great. Action is low and the Floyd stays in perfect tune at all times. I will certainly buy another one, if one comes up in Used Like New condition. Point of note. Although it says it comes with locking tuners...it doesnt.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

After reading the five star reviews for this guitar, I ditched my EVH Wolfgang Special in favor of the AX40. I am glad I did! It has a great feel in your hands with a solid neck that perfectly aligns the strings on the fingerboard and across the pickups. The pickups and tone are brighter than the EVH at full volume, but rolling it back flattens the response and you can go from virtually clean to dirt easily. I recommend ditching the 0.10 strings in favor of the EVH custom strings - it really made a difference in the overall tone and control of the harmonics. This is an excellent guitar for the money - and thanks to Musicians Friend for the Prez day sale - I was able to buy the guitar and a Music Man Case for the price of the guitar!

    Sterling AX40

    By John Heron

    from Canada

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

Overall, I am happy, although the shipping to Canada, the duty, and the changes needed to make the guitar wanted were a pain in the ass. I love the thing now though. You are going to get what you pay for, and guitar makers are like car makers, they have their line, but there are going to be base models up to luxury models. The good news is guitars are easier and cheaper to upgrade!
I tried the Music Man model in stores and loved them. I then read the reviews for Sterling guitars at Musician's Friend (couldn't get Sterling in Canada at the time), and was a little apprehensive. I bought it anyway.
In the end, the pick ups were pretty bad, woolly, weak, flat, as was the trem system (a lower end Floyd Rose model), which is made of inferior metal and started to wear almost immediately, and it definitely needed a set up, fret ends needed to be smoothed down, pitch and tonality were well off (no one takes pride in their product much anymore it seems), but otherwise, it is a beautiful guitar, gorgeous neck, beautiful layout, compact, easy to play. Some people complain about the lack of a tone nob, I am not one of them. Beatiful look and finish.
Again, other than some of the hardware, it is a very well thought out, well made guitar. Great playability, compact, nice and light.
I've read some reviews harping on the fact that the guitar was not built in the USA, but even the guitars that ARE built in the USA are still badly set up (or not at all), and depending on the brand/model, have some poor hardware. But with changing the pickups and the trem (which ideally I shouldn't have to do, but you get what you pay for), I now have basically the same guitar as the Music Man model, which sounds amazing (a Gibson Oiginal and a Gibson Dirty Fingers pick up) at less than half the price!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar a couple weeks ago, and I absolutely love it! I did a lot of reading reviews on it, then ordered one with a little reserve. Omg this guitar is not only beautiful, the fretboard is fast and plays like a dream. No need to run and spend money to get it setup, it has perfect action/intonation right off the UPS truck. Sterling did a fantastic job designing this guitar, and since they have refined and perfected the design, iits a great time to buy one. no need to change licensed floyd, or pickups, they play/sound great. Remember, people claiming to have a real axis and dogging on this guitar are jealous, this one plays and feels just as good!!!!!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

Pros-Great guitar, build quality, looks.-neck is asymetrical (thinner on bottom, thicker on top) enabling easier dancing on the thin strings. feels good.-floyd copy seems well made.-sounds good, give you bite on the bridge and cream on the neck. together they sound great.-comfortable to play, -affordable 1/2 to 1/3 the price of a EB Musicmanconsnone that i can see at this point.i'd change the tuners maybe, vol knob, strap locks but its a beauty -Trem only drops down which i guess i can get use to and it should give me more stable tuning.-comes with .10s on em, i prefer .09soverall, i am very happy with it and will use it to replace my primary axe gradually over the next few months.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I gotta say, after having this guitar for a month I couldn't be happier with it. It plays like butter! The neck is smooth and comfortable. Suitable for any type of playing. Its not that heavy but just the right weight to give off good tone. Customer support is awesome also. I cracked a saddle and called them up, asked for a replacement and its on its way in the mail as i type. Trust me, this guitar is a great investment and it can't be beat for the price. Its an axis for less. And really what can beat that? :)

    Not what I expected

    By Rog

    from SC

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

Looks beautiful, no cosmetic flaws. However, the fret ends are sharp, there's several places where the notes flatten out while bending, and even with the tremelo lowered flush with the guitar's bosy, the action is quite high for a guitar like this. I did a little truss rod adj. and it helped slightly. Pickups are muddy in my opinion. I am disappointed overall.

    Great Guitar for the money

    By JW-_HCFm

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I was looking for a humbucker guitar with a double locking tremolo and figured I'd give the AX40 a try. I figured I'd try it and return it if I did not like it. I now have 3 gigs under my belt with the AX40 and my expectations have been exceeded. It it a well built guitar, not cheap feeling at all like some overseas built guitars. The pick ups sound great to me and I have no plans on changing them. My only complaint is the neck pickup. It is a bit darker and louder than the bridge pickup. It sounds great if I EQ for the neck pickup but I mainly play the bridge pickup so I EQ for that and when I switch to the neck pickup it is too boomy with not enough highs. The guitar stays in tune even after going wild with the whammy bar. I love this guitar and I have tried a bunch of mid priced guitars and this one is a keeper

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

Excellent, reasonably priced copy of a Music Man Axis. I've owned Music Man Axis' before and this thing is amazing! Especially for the price! You won't have to worry about it being a $2k guitar - but it sure plays like one! Great Looks - Good Luck finding a good looking Quilt Top Axis anymore, most of 'em these days are Flame Top. The best thing about this guitar is the unfinished neck! It begs you to play it! You won't want to put this thing down. Set up was great right out of the box! My recommendation? Simple...Buy It!!! Wish it came in other colors. Maybe soon??? I own 13 guitars, and this is easily one of my favorites!!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX40 Electric Guitar:

I have both the blue and the orange and I have to say there great. I can scream and dive bomb just like Eddie. The pickups are pretty good for stock. Neck is comfortable and easy to play. The floyd stays in tune after a few adjustments. I knows its not the real axis, but its pretty close. They have become my favorite guitars to play. The only con I could find is that they seem to be hit or miss. Maybe its the wood or the timing when they are made, but I have played some in the stores that seem like a toy where others feel close to the axis. Try one out.
