Dual humbuckers, a long list of features and one amazing price.

AX3 borrows the classic single cutaway body style of Music Man’s Axis guitars. An original, classic design that is familiar to all fans of great guitars. The S.U.B. Series version uses a solid hardwood body topped with a bound quilt maple image top. The neck and body are mated with the same 5 bolt neck joint found on the Silo3. Sculpted and contoured for a super comfortable joint that allows easy access to the upper register.

The Asymmetrical neck carve on AX3 is sublime and has enough girth for grip and thin enough for easy playability. The 25.5″ scale maple neck & fingerboard has 22 medium sized frets and is super easy to play. The neck is seamlessly integrated to the body.

2 high output “Zebra” coil humbucking pickups are direct mounted to the body. The special wiring of these pickups offer 5 distinct, versatile tones via the 5 way selector switch. Different combinations yield chicken pickin single coil tones to throaty, huge humbucking rock tones. Single volume and tone controls. It’s all there in one guitar.

Vintage style tremolo bridge has a small area to rest your palm while picking. Individual saddles offer height and intonation adjustments for dialing in the perfect set up.

The Sterling Sub AX3 is probably one of the biggest bangs for the buck out there right now. I dont write reviews very often but considering my experience with this guitar I feel I have too.

The first thing I noticed about this guitar was the weight. Apparently its made from a wood called jabon but it honestly feels like mahogany. This guitar feels very solid and comfortable to play for hours. The hardware on this guitar feels very reliable and it has held tune very well. It even held its tuning after messing with the tremelo a bit. Which is very rare for a guitar in this price range that dosent have some kind of locking tuners. The guitar came with the action a tad bit higher than my liking after a few minutes of adjusting the action its setting quite low with ZERO fret buzz and ZERO dead frets. The craftsmanship in this guitar is very surprising. The neck just feels amazing its like the perfect cross between a Strat and a Les Paul. Also the wheel style truss rod adjuster makes it a breeze setting your neck relief.

This guitar sounds just as well as it plays. Im playing straight into a Fender Frontman 212R. The 5 way selecter and coil tapping can really help get some awesome tones. This guitar can go from jazz, blues, and country. To hard rock and metal in seconds. On higher gain settings I did not experience any feed back or muddy sounds. It was still very clear and you could hear all the notes being played.

I have been playing guitar for about 12 years now and this has to be one of the best deals out there. I have always been a big fan of the Ernie Ball Axis super sport and musicman stingray basses. This guitar does the musicman name very proud. Dont let the price fool you this is not just a beginners guitar. This is a players guitar. This is the guitar you play on stage when you dont want to bring your 1k+ Ernie Ball, Gibson, Fender etc. To some shady gig and risk messing it up. Its a very comfortable guitar to play with lots of versatile tones for lots of different styles. This guitar is also very easy to set up and work on the way everything is laid out. I highly recommend this guitar for a beginner, just for jamming, playing on stage, recording etc. I cant say enough good things about this guitar. Its well worth the money. Ive had and played alot of guitars. This thing can give a majority of midranged guitars a run for there money or just blow them out the water completely.

First off, Sterling by Music Man has HORRIBLE customer service, at least for customers of the entry level gear. I contacted them three times:

    1) inquiry about the possible of getting 'International Catalog' items in Canada and received curt and rude response.

    2) inquiry about defective bridge routing (see below), no response.

    3) inquiry about defective neck in 2nd guitar. No response.

MF had to send me three of these due to poor workmanship. MF was very good about the returns.

    - 1st guitar - this one had bridge pins that were drilled such that the bridge was very crooked. You could really see it by inspecting the tremolo block through the plastic rear plate it was very crooked. The bridge pickup was also routed off center, there wasn't enough room to recenter the pickup correctly.

    - 2nd guitar - despite the sealed manufacturers box in pristine shape, the finish had a dime size chip right through the laminate top. The neck screws were not all the way in and partially stripped, so it looked like a banana! Good pickup routes and perfectly straight bridge though!

    - 3rd guitar - sloppy drilling on bridge pins again so crooked bridge. Not nearly as bad as the first one, so I could compensate by adjusting the height of the bridge pins which would realign the bridge due to their hour glass shape. However, because the bridge is not hooked into the pin correctly, it must be kept flat, no floating bridge if you have to do this.

On the plus side the parts are excellent quality for a guitar in this range. The tuners are decent for entry level, the bridge and saddles hardware are decent, and the trem block is same size you get on a mex fender. Electronics are not great, but not terrible.

This *should* be an amazing value but the one thing you can't fix on this guitar is shotty drilling and routing of the wood.

Customer service seems to be non-existant for buyers of their entry level products.

I'm sure lots of people have no problems, but its the people that do have problems that show what kind of company you are dealing with.

Summary: Great guitar if you can find one that has properly aligned parts!

i've been playing guitar for around 50 years. and played everything from hard rock to gospel.i've been playing a thinline tele.for years and wanted a change i bought a used epi.les paul jr and after a little work it was great. so i baught new les paul 100 and hated it it had fret buzz and the nech felt like a 2x4 so i sent it back and got this guitar and i could'nt be happier.it played great and sounded great right out of the box i lowered the action a little bit but it really was good the way it came.i record fourtack tapes and leave out the lead guitar and lead vocals and sing and play along wiht them at church.it is great for my purpose and i cant think of any case where it wound'nt work great its a great guitar for the money and m.f. couldnt be nicer to deal with. i highly recomend this to anybody of any skill level P.S. tomorrow i'm going to order a peavey bass as well.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3 Axis Electric Guitar:

it has features that I like. the ''vintage' tremolo bar has a nice deep range. I like it better than a double or single locking. I set it up to where I can pull sharp but so the the screws are only about 2-3 inches. I set it back to 'normal' the asymmetrical neck is a pleasant surprise as well. the only thing I may ever mod in the future is to install locking tuners, of which im not familiar with but not at all necessary since I keep friction areas 'maintained'. I like the medium frets. my first electric instruments that I owned as a kid were fender squires w/ similar sized and not jumbo. this is a fine musical instrument and I would buy it again - the others colors. I just don't know why it's SUB.

This guitar does everything I want it to do. It's not a heavy guitar but should hold up well for part time gigging. The action is low which was a pleasant surprize. More to the point it looks amazing, sounds very nice both clean and dirty. It's a well made guitar that I will enjoy for many years to come. In closing I just want to say that I'm glad I added this Axe to my collection. Don't delay add it to your collection too!

The best bang for buck guitar ever.Couldn't resist this guitar at such a low price. I had heard so much about the quality and this has totally blown me away. There is usually at least one or two things on budget guitars that you either live with or fix but this is totally perfect and nearly my best playing guitar (close to the Charvel). My Ibanez RG 920 ended up costing me more than 4 times as much! Demo below.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3 Axis Electric Guitar:

I own a USA Axis and this guitar is very close in feel and tone. The pickups are punchy and surprisingly good for a guitar in this price range. The 5 way switch provides a surprisingly wide array of tones. The neck feels similar to my USA Axis. There are a few slightly sharp fret ends after the 12 fret but I can work on those. The weight and balance of the guitar is also similar to the USA version. The trem is not a Floyd so it is not really for divebombing but is not bad for a guitar at this price. Nice looking blue quilt top. I put some graphite in the nut slots and changed the strings to 10s and it really improved the tuning stability and tone. Bottom line, for the price this is a great guitar stock or for a modding project.

I had taped a John Fogerty concert and noticed he was playing a Musicman Axis on a song and it was screaming. Later that week I was handed a Sterling SUB that was exactly like Fogerty's. I play bass and teach guitar, preferring acoustic guitars. I had to have a SUB. Right now it's sitting on a stand in my living room. Initially I bought it(at a phenomenal price)as a toy. But I have been playing the heck out of it and have come to the conclusion that it owes no apology to anyone. I sure got my money's worth.
